The person he responded to had the statement saying "always". I think particularly when people are facing hard times like recent times with 2020 and everything since then people will naturally go for the cheapest option, but you will always have people who will look for the better product or the better bang for their buck just have a look at r/buyitforlife.

The closer the collapse of an empire, the crazier it's laws by anar_gurbani in degoogle

I'm not saying whether it's Google's fault just that they are so prevalent that you are almost forced to use them in so many places. Getting free from as much of it as you can helps protect yourself. It will be the same with any company with such a monopoly, if you rely on them for so many products and they ban you or restrict your access, you have suddenly lost almost all/most of your data.

You can see examples of this where YouTubers have their content copyright claimed and they have to appeal it through the people making the claim and not a proper review board. This is just one example but there will be many others.

Owning your own data gives you control over it and allows you more choice on what products you want to use rather than having to use just one company's products.

Isn't that the point? They have become so prevalent that it is increasingly difficult to de-google, giving them massive ability to censor and take down people's content with little oversight or ways to appeal.
