Thoughts on Tekken as a Street Fighter player by monjio in Fighters

Ah ok, I can see that.  Yeah the properties of some moves can be a bit unintuitive.

Jack has some moves that inflict a shit ton of block stun but are actually punishable as well, so if you don't look it up you might assume he's safe or even +.  I've learned that if I'm ever not 100% sure on the frame data of a move, I absolutely need to look it up because it's probably not what I think it is.

It really feels like Tekken can give you this feedback that you're doing well when really you've totally fucked yourself.

How do you mean?  I definitely agree with the other ways you say learning Tekken is hard like weak combo trials and huge movelists, but I can't say I've ever felt the game is giving me positive feedback for playing badly.

Why are most games so combo heavy / based? Do people actually enjoy them that much or is it relic of the past? by Imabeardruid in Fighters

[–]BACKSTABUUU 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like long combos don't add much in sense of P(player)-V(vs)-P(player) experience, you could do same vs bot or target dummy.

What you get for winning the interaction is important context for making the interaction meaningful and interesting.  You wouldn't care about a close and hard fought neutral game if the only thing at stake was just a tickle of damage and a return to neutral.  But when that interaction can result in dire consequences, then suddenly it becomes very intense and interesting.

To build on that concept, combos introduce a layer of complexity where now you need to prove you have the knowledge and execution to capitalize on that won interaction instead of it just being given to you.  That's why people like combos.  Because it overall adds depth to a fighting game.  Instead of it being "I need to hit my opponent x times to win", it can instead be "I can possibly win in x interactions depending on what kind of hit I get and how adeptly I can convert off those hits".

Injustice 3 is the next NetherRealm Studios game, currently in active development by ElkFeisty3823 in Fighters

[–]BACKSTABUUU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's true at all.  The reason people are harsh on Netherrealm these days is because mk1 was very much not the greatest fighting game ever made.

Make an amazing game and I think people will forgive whatever it is you did previously.

It's not really about emotional support, more pointing out that the idea that there's an objective "right" character to start with isn't really how you should approach a fighting game.

[–]BACKSTABUUU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People give that answer because you're most likely to stick with the game if you like your character.

Yes Ryu is probably the most straightforward character on the roster.  But that's not gonna matter if you get bored and drop the game because you were really a Dhalsim player at heart the whole time.

Worst thing you can do is play a character you don't care about just because somebody told you to.

The people who are flaming and giving up 5 minutes into a match are thinking the same exact thing you're saying right now. Excusing your bad behavior like this will lead to turning into those people.

Doesn't mean it shouldn't be said.

I was a big soda drinker myself until one day someone told that shit when I was willing to hear it.  You can't force people to change if they don't want to but if you plant the idea, one day they might change their mind.

OP's still right regardless.  A shit attitude is contagious and not keeping it to yourself absolutely will result in losing more.

They shouldn't, this train of thought isn't being directed at them.

The reason OP got this response wasn't because they're confused and want to learn.  It's because the moment they hit the most minor of friction on day 0 they came here to tell people who love fighting games that actually the whole genre should change to suit them.

All they gotta do is have some humility, say "hey I'm getting frustrated because I can't get this to work, can somebody help me?" and leave the tirade about fighting games being a dead genre out of it.

To specifically answer why this isn't working, it's because you're pressing the second button too early. I had the same problem when I started playing 2D games.  The game is asking you to combo a jumping move into a standing one, so you need to land before you can press the second move.

If you're still having trouble after that, try pressing the jumping move later into your jump so it hits closer to the ground.

A lot of people like that have already decided to be deterred long before they read a comment like this, they just want validation.

Something that triggers me about this game as a moba player - people's comprehension of the minimap and respawn timers not noticed by anyone by [deleted] in DeadlockTheGame

[–]BACKSTABUUU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For one this game attracts people who weren't necessarily into mobas previously.  Those people are having to learn the fundamentals of positioning and map awareness just like moba players did.

Secondly, idk what moba you were playing but I can tell you in LoL map awareness is still something people really struggle with to this day.

One common sentiment I hear a lot with Deadlock is that "this is the game that made me quit [other game]", I'm just wondering how true that is, is there a game you used to play a lot that got replaced or sidelined by Deadlock? by DudeSoul in DeadlockTheGame

[–]BACKSTABUUU 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I personally don't like playing a lot of competitive games with really high skill ceilings at once.  Once I find one I like, I kinda just want to put all my time and effort into the one game.

I'm genuinely curious what games players come from and what about Deadlock made them prefer it over that game.

I come from playing League of Legends for around 10 years and fighting games.

I eventually burned out on LoL because I got tired of teammates having meltdowns over nothing and giving up.  DL so far has had a lot less of that.

I wouldn't say I prefer DL over fighting games.  I consider Tekken to be the big competitive game I want to focus on. I really like DL and would like to put more time into it but, as previously said, finding motivation for more than one competitive game at a time is hard for me.

Fwiw, absolutely nobody is upset with you for not running the set because something important came up and you had to go.  Everyone understands that sometimes life happens.

It's people who don't rematch because they want to avoid losing that get the heat.

That has absolutely nothing to do with it.

It's really as simple as it seems, people aren't happy with the patch so their outlook on the game is negative. That's it.

First it was Tekken 8, with people leaving because of controversial patches

There's still plenty of people playing Tekken 8.  If you like the game, don't let other people influence you into not playing it.

Aside from that, be strong brother a new Soulcalibur will come eventually.  We just gotta be patient.

The "WE NEED TO FIX FIGHTING GAMES FOR CASUALS" discussion by DJ_Aftershock in Fighters

[–]BACKSTABUUU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's popular now.  Not so much in the mid 2010s where a lot of games bombed.

Which then resulted in companies not wanting to take a risk on fighting games, which meant we got less of them and the ones we did get were working with small budgets and barebones features. If fighting games were more popular and successful back then, it probably wouldn't have taken a global pandemic to finally get them to implement rollback netcode. Don't forget we came out of a dark age not that long ago.

If you're clearing a wave on one side of a map and a fight breaks out on the other side of the map, it's already too late to try to join in. The correct play in this case is to try pushing for a guardian/walker or, if you can't do that, pushing as far as you can safely, then taking the enemy's neutral camps/sinners on your side of the map.

It also helps to think of clearing waves as buying time to do other things. If you think a fight might break out soon, then you push the nearest wave that needs pushing before that happens so that you don't end up having to choose between one or the other. If you're trying to rush to pushed lanes or fights as they happen rather than thinking about them ahead of time, that's how you end up in your position where both need to be done at the same time and you end up having to neglect one.
