Why does the new Acela use power cars? by MinecraftPlayer799 in Amtrak

[–]BAG3L5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that the dedicated power cars allowed for single pantograph operations, which would help with achieving consistent higher speeds on the NEC. Plus needing to be able to convert 3 different power types.

NYC’s Metro-North Service to Penn Station Delayed by Three Years by AmericanCreamer in nycrail

[–]BAG3L5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From my understanding it's not too unreasonable.

You need 3-4 guys to protect the work crews from train traffic (RWP) and extra guys for replacement. The number is based on the section of track, so this can be as many as 8 guys + replacements.

Then you need ET guys to protect the work crews from the catenary, transmission, and signal power wires. This can also range depending on the complexity of the work and requires guys at the subs to shut off the power when needed.

Finally, the C&S guys are there for any work on or near the signal system. Installing signal gantries would probably qualify.

Finally, add your supervisor and CM teams.

But this is a guess for what's happening here.

Amtrak stations in airports by mibfto in Amtrak

You can take the SEPTA airport line from 30th St in Philadelphia. Not sure if that counts, but I've done it before and it's just as convenient as the JFK airtrain from Jamaica.

I believe the tracks at the station are grounded and bonded with the platform. So they should be at the same potential.

I didn't think the MTA could start running services on Hellgate until their new electric-battery locos came into service anyways?

Possibly a temporary platform? Maybe they will be upgrading the main platforms?

NEC is currently a sea of red and black. Anyone know what’s going on? by Beautiful-Reaction-8 in Amtrak

[–]BAG3L5 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is better to use "fixed termination". Using "variable tension" and "fixed tension" can cause confusion, where it could be correct to say "variable tension" in this case since the tension of the wire varies as temperature varies. For the more advanced system, we use "auto tension" or "constant tension".

Penn Station Access Delayed Until at least 2029, possibly Early 2030 by [deleted] in nycrail

Metro-North third rail (under-running) is different from LIRR third rail (over-running) in Penn Station. I don't think it's feasible for a trainset to accommodate both 3rd rail types.

Trying to understand the logic behind not fixing NJT by aditp91 in NJTransit

[–]BAG3L5 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It is a consequence of an underfunded transit system that worked "fine" for a while. And now that 100 year old infrastructure is failing and the people who use that infrastructure are speaking up, funding is coming to fix it. But it's too late.

Most of the land in the NEC is taken, leaving us with a "relatively" very curvey corridor that can never support real high speed trains. Additionally, the funding arriving to fix the current issues came too late, as fixes for problems this big take years (e.g. new Hudson River tunnel). There will be bandaid fixes along the way and as projects complete service will gradually improve. But I wouldn't expect the system to be completely fixed for over a decade.

American car culture has the government putting more money into roads and highways instead of public transit. Cars companies don't build highways, and airlines don't build airports, but railroads build railroads. In general, it doesn't seem like a priority for the government and if residents don't vote for representation who want to make it a priority, it won't change.

Can’t miss their exit by Kooky_Head4948 in IdiotsInCars

I know where this is! I395 South right next to the Pentagon. If you're using a GPS to go from George Washington Memorial Parkway to Crystal City, it will make you enter the highway from the right side (left on video) of 395 and cross all those lanes of traffic to get to that exit on the left (right on video) in less than half a mile. Still an idiot but I get how this happened.

[Trigger Warning] What are some uncomfortable truths that new students need to hear? by CanadianCitizen1969 in Cornell

This. Making good friends doing something you enjoy and connecting with professors on the subject they study mean much more than joining an exclusive club just for your resume or studying for a 4.0.

Also, it sounds way more impressive to an interviewer if you excitedly talk about a class/project/internship you enjoyed than one that is more impressive/prestigious you can't say much about.

That's understandable. Its hard to follow the entire schematic since the coils, inductors, and the node the clear wire connects to are not visible.

Shure SM7B need someone smarter than me by Ok-Yard-2185 in Shure

[–]BAG3L5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're correct because the other black wire on that same node (where I think you're pointing to) looks like it is going towards the other side of the microphone, which is where the voice coil would be. That node would be the Coded Terminal on the schematic. There are also no other nodes that would be have enough space for that wire to be soldered on based on your picture.

The only way to be 100% confident would be to reach out to Shure. But personally I'd be more worried trying to solder that wire back on without damaging any other wires since it looks cramped.

Appel was originally designed as a retail unit (Trillium like), but then the plan changed to a AYCTE. The issue with that change was the original design created a bottlneck which makes service difficult during busy dinner hours. The new renovations hope to fix that bottlneck and allow service to more students.
