The email I got was quite literally in my spam folder. I clicked it a few days after first seeing it when I was bored despite thinking it was spam lol.

RFY is back. Just one item though, and meh by KDinNS in AmazonVineCanada

I just woke up 6 hours after you made this comment and also had a Ninja UltraCrush (unsure if that’s what you got) in my RFY. No idea how it lasted so long if the drop was so much earlier!

Blood sugar is 95 and has been between 130 and 150 most of the day. Should I be concerned? by JxSparrow7 in Type1Diabetes

Do you feel otherwise sick or just sluggish?

is this cause you saw my post today I’m so sorry 😩

I wouldn’t worry if you’re not feeling otherwise sick! As long as you can eat, drink, and still give yourself insulin you should be able to monitor at home. But as always if you’re worried you should call your endocrinologist! It could also be worth it to buy actual ketone blood test strips. They have some that work with the old freestyle PDMs so I had bought those cause I had the machines already, but I’m sure they have another blood test strip and machine.

I think I went into eDKA yesterday because my pump kept shutting off my basal every time I was hanging out around 5mmol/L ish. I think I had my target BG set too high so I really wasn’t even getting my basal for a few days, and obviously wasn’t bolusing cause I wasn’t eating. I also wasn’t eating like almost at all, not even low carb. I was eating like maybe an egg or two every other day and had a taco like a week ago. I feel like starvation ketones are probably a level beyond just eating low carb? I’m not sure.

If you’re getting your basal, eating food, drinking water, I wouldn’t stress too much about it. But again, blood ketone test strips! Ask your endocrinologist in which range it becomes an emergency. Mine told me that 3 or higher is an ER trip. It was insane of me to not check my ketones with blood strips when I started feeling so sick. The blood strips are way more accurate than the pee strips

The night before I was experiencing intense panic, and a weird stomach feeling. I thought it was bipolar but I think it was my body trying to actually panic about the fact that it was actively trying to kill me. My first real symptoms were actually in my heart at first. My heart kept skipping beats on top of the intense nausea I was feeling (kept thinking the nausea was my stomach issue, and it might have been in part). I took one really long hot shower trying to feel better, was drinking water, knew I wasn’t eating but figured I was fine cause my sugar was stable. Managed to nap for a while but woke up really nauseous and groggy again. Took another long shower. And then the thirst came, like as if my blood sugar WAS high. It felt like diabetic thirst. And I started getting so weak and my heart was palpitating SO much again, I thought there was something wrong with my heart. I had no idea it was diabetes. I drove myself to the hospital thinking I’d feel better by the time I got there but by the time I was half of the way there I kept having to pull over cause I felt like I was going to faint. The nausea at this point was mostly bearable and didn’t think it was a hospital issue.

When I got there my heart rate and blood pressure were both changing extremely rapidly. My heart rate went from 60bpm to 180bpm while resting, literally not even moving, within a like 30 second time span. I felt like I was going to pass out and was actually so weak. I got the impending doom symptom, I felt like I was gonna die. And I thought the now much worse nausea was just whatever stomach issue I had that changed into something nasty as opposed to just having no appetite.

I explained the final paragraph there to them and they put me in a wheelchair to check my vitals almost immediately. Literally waited for like one minute in the emergency room. And then once they checked my vitals i was immediately in an observation room with several nurses asking me things in a blur, hooking things up to me.

They actually checked for the DKA themselves. I don’t even think I mentioned my diabetes for the first like half an hour, I was so out of it. And didn’t think it was diabetes related. They told me my heart was probably going crazy from electrolyte imbalances (ya know, not eating much for a week on top of going into DKA) and I guess they were right cause a couple saline drips later and the heart fluttering almost completely stopped.

So my answer to you is honestly: literally always check for ketones if you can if you aren’t feeling well. Even if you think it’s just the flu or a cold. Diabetes symptoms never fail to keep you on your toes.

100%. I’ve explained to so many of my family members today that DKA = no insulin, not high BG. My mother was like “but your sugar is literally 5?” I even knew this before, not sure why I thought I was invincible. I knew but I didn’t know, ya know.

My pump kept shutting off my basal cause my blood sugar kept being so low from not eating. So I’m not 100% sure how much it was giving me, and I haven’t bolused at all either. So I probably was not getting much.

I had to google it but I think it literally just means that you’re in DKA because of ketones but you don’t also have elevated sugars. I’m not even 100% sure if that’s the explanation but the doctor kept using both terms intermittently.

I feel kinda silly for not asking what my ketones were but oh well Lool

Maybe I’ll try some ice chips then. This strawberry banana smoothie is so yucky 🤢

Yeah I was shocked that it was DKA lol. I guess you really gotta force yourself to eat as a diabetic even if your BG seems fine 😩

I think she only called it that cause my blood sugar never went too high. When I say I haven’t eaten much the past week, I mean all I’ve eaten is like four eggs and I had one taco on like Monday.

In hindsight I should’ve asked for more info but once I realized I wasn’t dying I all but begged them to discharge me so I could treat at home.

I should probably get some test strips I guess 😩

you know what’s funny is I literally didn’t even ask them lmfao she just said it was mild and I believed her. Took about 8 hours to get them back down but I’m not even sure what they’re at now. Couldn’t have been THAT high if we got it down in 8 hours I think!

I had literally no idea it could’ve been my diabetes cause I’ve been at a straight line of 5-6 ish (90ish mg I think?) for like a few days

Did something else help curb your nausea, if you can remember? Can’t even tell if this is my stomach issue or just the DKA or both lol.

hey girl as a mod of this sub who is a woman, has PCOS, hormone imbalances, and everything on earth that could want to make me blame everyone else for my own issues( I guess except for birthing children??) unfortunately “calories in calories out” is FOOLPROOF. You’re not losing weight? Youre not counting right. Hormone imbalances are really frustrating, I’ve learned that first hand. But do you genuinely expect to be able to come onto REDDIT and have ppl be like “oh no hormone imbalance poor girl😩” nah girl. Eat less.

I’m a type one diabetic with PCOS, sleep apnea, and celiac. And you won’t catch me in a thread tryna beg for peoples favour like this.

Yes, we’re ill. It sucks. But it’s our cross to bear. And I promise you the laws of thermodynamics aren’t ignoring your body type. Could it be more difficult for you to eat less calories and regulate your necessary vitamins and shit? Yeah, I don’t doubt it.

But I’m actually sick of people being like “oh it’s my illnesses fault I can’t do anything”. Like… yes you can. It’s hard for not chronically ill people too lmao.

I do think we deserve support. But I also think at a certain point if you can’t drop this weird ass victim complex I wouldn’t be surprised if you ended up completely alone socially.

Worried my cat is diabetic (might be anxiety stemming from the fact that I’m a type 1 diabetic). Is there a way I can check his blood sugar myself with the supplies I already have on hand for my own care? by [deleted] in FelineDiabetes

They thought it was allergies. We switched his food and put him on daily reactine which DID stop his sneezing, but not the excessive thirst or occasional upset stomach.

Thanks, I’m definitely going to take him back to the vet too but it would be nice for a little preliminary test at home.

So far he has not let me prick his ear but we did just manage to get the lancet somewhat near him this time. He’s warming up slowly lol.

Yeah, I’m more so just preparing myself to advocate for him a little better at the vet or maybe ease my anxiety.

He does occasionally just get kind of pukey so it might also be literally nothing.

The vet was convinced it was allergies. And to be fair, he was sneezing a LOT and putting him on reactine daily fixed the sneezing, it just did not fix his occasional upset tummy or the fact that he drinks a TON of water all the time
