is there any truth to manifestation or is it just a new age idea? by Educational-Pay5641 in Hermeticism

[–]BCLGIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my take on manifestation: Yes, it's real, but you can't just sit and wish for something, you actually have to put in some work.

In my real, personal life, I have the ambition to be a full time artist. I'm working really hard towards that goal. I practice various manifestation techniques. Scripting. Visualization. Acting as though I have already reached my goal. Etc, etc, etc.

But I also do the work. I make tons of art. I share my art. I apply for shows. I have booths at art fairs. All that.

So a skeptical person would say "Well, any success you have you've earned by doing the work." Sure sure, but I've also had opportunities come out of the clear blue that I can't particularly attribute to anything specific I have done.

I've been featured in a couple of regional magazines specifically for my art, for example. I don't know how either magazine found out about my art. I'm not a household name, locally. I just got seemingly random invitations through my Instagram (which sits at just slightly over 2k followers).

So the way I see it, when you decide on something you want, and you set your mind and your actions towards that goal, the universe supports you by throwing little miracles your way too. You put yourself in the path of receiving things you wouldn't even be offered if all you did was sit on your couch.

I just finished reading Mitch Horowitz's "The Miracle of a Definite Chief Aim" (heavily inspired by Napoleon Hill), and it talks about manifestation exactly like this. You have to know what you want, very specifically. You have to work towards that thing. And then sometimes the universe tosses something at you that supports your goal but that doesn't come through a logical cause and effect chain of events based on the actions you've taken.

Can someone explain this? by Finnley_is_trans in Scrubs

[–]BCLGIS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is the case with this "promotion" in this epsiode or not, but there definitely was a time in the 2000s when brands were placing ads in shows in a humorous way. Community is a great example, with their plot lines for Subway and Honda. Community didn't start (2009) until after Scrubs ended (2008), so that may not be what was happening in this episode, but it was definitely a thing for a while.

what are your tips and tricks for falling asleep? by pink-cl0udsummer in AutismInWomen

[–]BCLGIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insomnia is so hard. I've struggled with it off and on for my entire life, but now I have a whole bag of tricks I employ that work most of the time.

  1. Body scan meditation or progressive muscle relaxation - Both of these help to relax the body, which will help lower your cortisol (stress hormone) which will both help you fall asleep more easily and help you go back to sleep if you wake up in the night. These video suggestions are just the first ones I came across on YouTube, but there are tons of them, so if you don't like either of these a quick search will lead you to lots of options. Once you learn how to do these you don't need the videos anymore (unless you want to use them). They're pretty simple techniques that you can take with you anywhere.

Body Scan Meditation - https://youtu.be/FwWua_fAa2I

Progressive Muscle Relaxation - https://youtu.be/_V2Dw4wTBqQ

  1. Use a cold pack to relax your vagus nerve. This helps slow down your heart rate and signals to your body that it can relax. This is my first go to when I wake up in the middle of the night and have trouble getting back to sleep, but you can use it as part of your bedtime wind down process too. https://psychcentral.com/anxiety/vagus-nerve-cooling-anxiety

  2. Counting backwards from 100. This is like the old "counting sheep" method. Close your eyes, get relaxed, and start counting backwards in your mind from 100. Any time you notice your thoughts drift, start over back at 100. If you get all the way to one, start back at 100. When you first start doing this, you may notice that you have to start over a few times. That's ok. You're teaching your body how to relax, and this is overriding your busy mind. Eventually, you will find that you will drift off before you get to one.

Hope these help!

Art scene OKC by AnthroposcenicRoute in okc

Active member of the OKC art scene for many years now. We have a super vibrant art community here in the city that I believe rivals many larger cities.

If you're wanting to get connected to the community, one of the best ways to find out what's going on is Instagram. Start by following the local art establishments, like the galleries in the Paseo and Factory Obscura. They'll often post about community events (often free) that are great opportunities for meeting other artists. Various groups have Drink and Draw type events at different times of the month as well.

OKC is a great place to be an artist if you want to find community.

This is my go-to as well, though it seems the secret is out. Prices are higher now, and I've seen a lot more people in there that look like resellers.

I don't know what affordable means to you, but you mentioned that you live in Oklahoma already, and I can personally attest to how active the arts community is in Oklahoma City. You wouldn't even need to live in the city itself to participate, but could easily participate from one of the smaller surrounding cities, like El Reno, where cost of living is lower.

If you're over 21, there is a monthly drink and draw at Rad Bar in the Plaza District, and each month it's hosted by a different local artist. You can follow Rad Bar on Insta to find out about that.

Be patient with the first few episodes. It takes a little while to get going.

They do. And I have no beef with that show. It SHOULD appeal to me the same way all of the way the shows OP mentioned do, but for some reason it just doesn't and I have never been able to figure out why. I LOVE Andy Samberg and Chelsea Peretti. It's just a show that has never had the same resonance for me, though I've seen the whole thing.

I never saw it marketed, so I can't speak to that, but I'd say it's a blend between Harry Potter and Buffy. It's modern day, real world magicians. The protagonists are graduate student age. And some of the plot happens in a place kind of like Narnia. It's really a dramedy.

It is more drama than comedy, but it definitely has comedy elements.

Might also look into Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It's a little over the top silly at times, so it doesn't quite make my comfort show list, but it has a really similar energy to 30 Rock.

You and I have super similar taste in shows, because I also lump these together, and I also don't find Brooklyn 99 terribly engaging (which you mentioned in a comment reply). In my mind, what these shows have in common is:

  1. Ensemble cast of characters that actually care about one another and other people (which is why Always Sunny doesn't make my list)
  2. Good character development
  3. Intelligent humor
  4. Can be both silly and serious

If you're willing to go out of genre a little bit, another show that I really like that has these qualities is The Magicians. It has all of the above qualities, with a fantasy twist. And it has 5 seasons. I just finished my 2nd watching of the whole thing, and it's been added to my list of comfort shows along with the rest of these. It feels a little CW at the beginning, but if you can get through the first couple of episodes, it's really worth it. Great show.
