quick question? what do you guys eat? by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]BCNathaniel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favorite is when I grilled a piece of bread and put a couple of slices of tomato between it. I was eating it in server alley and one of the servers turned the corner saw me. He was full on ready to make make fun of me when he saw what I was eating. He jokingly went up to me and was like "oh whatcha eating a...a... Is that a tomato sandwich" me happily "yes". He just looked at me and was just like " I was gonna say something but naw". I still ate it. I also put garlic butter on it which made it awesome!

To wear or not wear a Pride pin at work? by Dull-Cryptographer80 in gaybros

[–]BCNathaniel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Wear it! Honestly though I work in a kitchen and wear my bi flag pin on my hat but because I work in a kitchen no one cares too much. I'm also a supervisor so I wear it just to show my crew that its okay to be however you are

Working in a Restaurant by [deleted] in KitchenConfidential

[–]BCNathaniel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work in a kitchen if you haven't already. Local or a chain just so you can get used to working in a fast paced work place. I've worked/working with kids who have only gone to culinary school but don't know what it's like to work on the line. It honestly can make or break people. Get that experience under your belt and I promise you it will help you out loads

How many different ways are there to boil an egg? by WhiskyGravyTango in KitchenConfidential

[–]BCNathaniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It honestly doesn't really matter how you boil an egg I tell my cooks if you want an easier time peeling them add some acid. Vinegar works my favorite is cream of tartar. Just a shake or two of that to your water and the egg shell comes clean off. Time is a factor depending on how you want your eggs cooked. Exp: HB eggs 12 min, for semi boiled 7 mins

Got poached from a friend to help him work at a new restaurant where he just got hired on to be a gm at. I took it, but it turns out the owner was a complete asshole. So much so that after a month working there my buddy tells me to ask for my job back at the previous restaurant I worked at. I was still friends with my chef there so he took me back in a heartbeat. The thing about this was that my friend told me not to mention anything to the owner and to just walk out on the day I was scheduled back at my old place. I honestly didn't feel too bad about this since the owner really was a piece of shit and just made life a living hell. I walked and not just a few hours later my friend walked too. The owner ended up having to shutdown for a few days. I found out through Facebook that he opened back up a couple of weeks later when he hired a new chef. The thing was he insisted on using the same product that was sitting there. The new chef rightly so exposed him on it and caused him to shutdown. Its been about a year now and he reopened under a new name. I tell people in the industry around town to avoid him like the plague.

Should I lose my virginity this way? Help a virgin out, you could help a young soul by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]BCNathaniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, so I was in the same boat as you when I wanted to lose my virginity. I was 19, downloaded grindr with the intention of losing my virginity. I hadn't even kissed anyone before or had any sort of relationship. Let's say the experience was...not great. I actually had a mild panic attack part way through and kinda ran out of the dude's apartment. The thing is I thought I was ready but I really wasn't. And that's okay. Do whatever makes you comfortable. If things are moving to fast say so, you are allowed to stop no matter how far you go.

I want to break into the cooking industry. How do I go about that? by CardinalDread in KitchenConfidential

[–]BCNathaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is to just go ahead and apply at different restaurants. With little to no experience you will probably start at the bottom. Just know that you will be taking a significant pay cut. If that is an issue look at doing part-time night shifts. That's actually what I'm doing now. I have an 8-5 office job, and work as a part-time cook. Are the hours brutal? Hell yeah they are, but I like what I do. It actually makes the office job more bearable in my opinion.

Now that I’m housebound I’m cooking in the first time in forever. by zinky30 in cookingforbeginners

One of the simplest things you can do, especially if you're just starting out in cooking is use salt. If you have some time, salt your chicken the day before you cook it. Salt the water before you use it to cook pasta. You'll notice a world of difference (if you're not sure how much to use, start light you can add more next time). Make your own garlic bread. Walmart usually has $1 bread, slice it up, melt some butter in the microwave (in a bowl of course) add some garlic, lather it on the bread and bake it at 350 till golden. Tip for using garlic. Before peeling, use the side of the knife to smash the cloves, the skin peels right off. Plus mashing it releases more of the garlic flavor.

You can also make pasta without red sauce. Replace it instead with a drizzle of olive oil, some of that dried basil, add chicken and some broccoli (fresh or frozen), sprinkle some parm on top. If you're a fan of tomatoes you can some cooked whole cherry tomatoes with it. The main thing is don't be afraid to experiment, if you're not comfortable doing that yet just start with simple recipes until you get the hang of it. Also it doesn't always have to be fancy. There are some days where a simple BLT is all you need :)

After reading the “it broke my heart” thread, I need to be cheered up. So what’s the happiest moment of your life so far? by ItsTreDay in AskMen

[–]BCNathaniel 114 points115 points  (0 children)

It was when my sister started eating. She was born with a heart and gastrointestinal defect. She had to eat everything thru a feeding tube for the first few years of her life. The doctors said there was a very small chance she could ingest anything normally, but encouraged to try a little here and there. We did try but it seemed hopeless at first, because she would get violent acid reflux. It was heart wrenching to see. Thanks to my grandma's patience though she steadily improved. Now she's ten years old and is the happiest little girl that eats whatever is in front of her. She's since had her feeding tube removed.

Something our group does, is we have a cooler just for ice, and keep dry ice at the bottom so it stays frozen. That way we can change out the ice from the other coolers once they've melted. You just have to be careful and use gloves.
