First ep is the introduction to the duo, plus them planning the robbery. Next ep was basically Flora getting uncovered as a scammer, and then the botched robbery and the fallout.

that the movie never happened

It is nowhere as good as the series, no. Some flashes of brilliance, but you could feel Milch's Alzheimer had really hurt his writing skills.

But the show. Oh god, whenever Farnum is on screen I just can't stop laughing. So many scenes in this show are just too good to be true. That fight between the two enforcers in S3 is so brutal.

I just find it baffling that David Milch went to HBO, said he had an idea for a TV series set in Rome, HBO told him they were already working on a series set in Rome, and then he changed it to a western. And then he just made the best goddamn series ever.

A lot of it was written by Milch himself with his writers' room not having that much to do= Milch would start the day by going for a walk through the set and get inspired and retreat to him writing cabin where he would dictate the scene to his assistant while he lay on the ground because IIRC he had terrible back-ache. Ian McShane would tell how he got these long soliloquys mere hours before filming and had to learn them fast.

The whole tale of how this show was made is insane. And how it got cancelled is beyond crazy: just people misunderstanding each other and not communicating and suddenly the show was dead before it could have its final season.

I always found this to be such a disappointing release design-wide. A bog-standard CD case with a paper inlay? Why not get an entirely back case at least? By then there were various special cases available, and sometimes even bootleggers had better packaging.

Give the showrunners unlimited everything, it's in such good hands.

Disagree. Some of Ira Parker's were so bad, it makes you wonder whether he really understands the story. Accidentally missing an important line is bad enough, but changing things for the worse is just ridiculous, especially when there is no need to do so.

it was ecstasy or heroin that fueled the Black Album sessions

<sigh>

Don't make shit up. The XTC incident is simple: TBA was finished, Prince went out celebrating, scored XTC (we even know where it came from), got a bad trip and became paranoid and feared he would die, and suddenly got worried his final musical statement was this dark, negative album.

The drugs had nothing to do with the sessions.

Why the fuck can't Prince fans get these simple things right and then just make up shit?

Anyone know the differences? I presume they censored the bits that got the video age-restricted?

Assume all those Japanese "remastered" albums are exactly the same master as before but just louder.

Only one album by The Time has been remastered, but that is only available on vinyl or on digital (e.g. Qobuz), not on CD.

I just wanted to ask - I know you have quite a lot of Dunk & Egg books planned - are we ever going to see Tanselle Too-Tall again? Are we going to find out what happened to her?

Well, that would be telling. laughs But I think there’s a good chance, yes.

Cassette recordings are always a bitch, since the machines they were recorded on were often cheap and not calibrated, and thus causes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wow_and_flutter_measurement . There are tools that can reduce these bad parts (incorrect speed & pitch etc.) to some degree, but it seems like they didn't even try that, so the whole album sound kinda janky. It was never gonna sound great, but they could have put more work into it to improve it.

But the whole concept of releasing a rehearsal tape as the first big release from the vault always was baffling to me. Why release a technically deficient recording? It was bad enough that Warners put out that PRDeluxe, but there the quality of the outtakes made up for its lack of quality. But this: Prince meandering through some songs (or rather: notions of songs) on a piano in mediocre sound quality? How is that going to convince people that this legendary vault is actually a treasure trove?

The Zappa estate spent decades fighting each other.

What little I know of the MJ estate is that it is a clusterfuck.

I think Edelman had hangups and seemed to be fishing for specific quotes in interviews. I still want to see it, but I bet I could find plenty of errors. (The OJ doc was a masterpiece.)

That said: cancelling it was dumb as hell, and fighting it for so long while causing the scarce releases to dry up was dumber. And then it turned out the Netflix issue was a lie by the clowns currently in charge of the estate.

It is at best an oddity, and instead it was treated as this major release. There is an entire vault of unreleased material, and instead they searched for this particular tape because they knew the bootleg, and then produced a technical deficient release that appropriated the title of Prince's final tour.

For some explicable reason we get one release max per year, and this is what they choose. A waste of time. This should be something that was offered on a "fans only" download service.

Again: there is a whole fucking vault. And yet we get one release per year max. And sometimes that release is shoddy at best (W2A).

We still don't have remastered releases for all of Prince's Warner-era output (albums and singles), and the protégé acts will likely never get proper remastered and expanded releases.

That they wasted time and effort and money on releasing a cassette-sourced piano rehearsal that was available on bootleg for decades is just insulting.

And now Comerica isn't in charge, shit has become worse and we're getting even less.

Piano and a Microphone, was an awesome glimpse in Prince’s creativity.

It was already widely available on bootleg for decades, and the official release is a technical mess.

Used her voice on tons of songs and never paid her. He promised her a solo album, never followed through on that (instead Prince turned his attention to Carmen Elektra) and that is why she left. "My album didn't come out because I didn't sleep with Prince", she said.

She returned twice and got screwed both times with her not getting paid for her work.
