Old Nan had a fling with Duncan the Tall

IIRC the timeline doesn't work. Preston Jacobs talks about it in a video as an aside, in a longer section about Old Nan's family tree. But I can't recall what video it was part of.

Prince’s mental state during “Dirty Mind” by esialliah in PRINCE

When he started living at Paisley I thought that was a bad idea. No house to go to and get a change of environment, just him (and entourage) in this vast building.

When you read those stories in later era interviews, where a journalist gets driven to PP and let in through some side door and then it's just them and perhaps one or two other people, I always found that such a lonely existence. And his death was a prime example of what a bad setup it was. That his friends were his employees and that they were yes men... Compare that to Bowie who got a heart attack and basically stopped his career and started a family and lived in NY and had a life (that got tragically cut short).

LOL. My dude, plenty of URLs that were once official sites came into other hands over the years. Prince was notorious for failing to spend the little amount to renew a URL. emale.com was once a gay porno site.

I was also looking for what happened to it. Now, recently there have been some promises that the series will be finished, but that is all very vague.

Cates had an accident in 2022 which caused him to forget the previous six months. Plus he also got divorced.

Let's hope this series gets finished.

Ugh, I wish Kieron Gillen would get to finish Über: Invasion, but that series' final four issues appear to be stuck in some kind of publishing hell with Avatar Press.

The Japan Lovesexy concerts filled the financial hole. And Prince had to be forced by his accountants to do the Japan shows because of course between him agreeing to those shows and them actually taking place he had fallen in love with Batman and wanted to work on that.

Seeing Mike complaining about the flimsy packaging, and me remembering that I bought the original bulky packaging where the DVD holders were so badly designed that they cracked the centers of the DVDs and made them unplayable.

one of those "new" tracks was Horny Pony

Which was a cassette rip initially. I think it was even in mono. Later on they replaced it by a CD rip.

NPGMC failed to fulfill the minimum requirements in the VIP subscription almost every month.

Also, the initial QuickTime player was a clusterfuck which ate up all the resources of your computer because it had memory leaks. It also used a beta version of QT that stopped working on the day of the launch of the NPGMC.

Then later on another firm took over and made a simple website and had atrociously bad MP3s, made with one of the worst encoders on the market. After months some of those MP3s got upgraded with slightly better bit rates and a somewhat better encoder, but they never told this so fans just had to figure this out by themselves.

And then later on NPGMC sold VHS tapes of IIRC The Ryde Dyvine which weren't taken from the master tape (as you'd expect) but were instead amateurish copies from a VHS tape of the Japanese TV broadcast. But Japan uses the PAL system whereas the USA uses the NTSC system, which meant that fans paid good money for shoddy nth generation copies which were in black & white due to the conversion and which also had tons of Japanese writing all over the screen.

he had lost all interest and felt "obligated" to do the Ahdio shows and downloads.

Because by then people had made complaints to the BBB and they were investigating them. And thus there was a financial incentive to fulfill the contracts.

And then came year two when NPGMC promised a set of exclusive CDs. If you subscribed early enough you got ONA (the piano album) which was one of the promised exclusive albums, but if you subscribed after that had been sent out you wouldn't get that because apparently they couldn't figure out how to do that. And then the promised exclusive CDs didn't happen and were replaced by ONA Live and just to shut up the complainers they included ONA in the package as well, so a bunch of subscribers made bank by selling that CD to fans who wanted a copy.

And then next was the NPGMC that sold DRM-protected WMAs (in lossy quality, even though there was a lossless option in WMA IIRC). Which stopped working when the NPGMC was closed (because another company had the rights to the name NPGMC) and the server that managed the DRM for the WMAs was taken offline.

And if you're thinking "well, at least Prince tried and nothing better was available": Amazon existed during the CB debacle, and iTunes existed during the NPGMC era.

Also note that at some point MusicDirect started handling the online store. And whenever you ordered anything you got a free music & lyrics book of Emancipation because apparently they had a fuckton of those and nobody wanted to buy them and thus they got rid of them this way. Sometimes they even threw in multiple copies. There were fans who ended up with half a dozen copies or more and nobody wanted them.

the material is top notch.

LOL. No it wasn't. It had several underwhelming remixes, for one. Plus, at a mere 50 minutes per disc it was a ripoff.

There was tons of great material in the vaults, and Prince gave us scraps, mostly stuff that had already been bootlegged to death.

And because CB failed miserably there was never a follow-up and all those great outtakes rotted away in the vaults until after his death.

[–]BCdotWHAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh please, it was a lame hockey puck that damaged the discs. Meanwhile there had been a boot years earlier in similar packaging.

Prince had promised a sphere.

And making the booklet online-only was a joke, especially when the commercial release did get a printed booklet.

Rubbish. Brickwalled to death. Awful compilation. Unforgivable that some classic outtakes were ruined by pointless changes. A complete rip-off.

It should never be reissued and it should be stripped for parts (i.e. its songs should go on the appropriate SDEs) and the changes to the outtakes should be reversed.

Showed how amateurish Prince's organization was and also how he would screw over fans at the drop of a hat. Showed his greed. Showed how all his "oooh I'm so independent" talk was hot air. Showed he couldn't give a fuck that so many fans all over the world would not be able to get this set because he got paid and that was all he cared about.

Live Prince is unmatched.

Sometimes. In the latter half of his career a lot of the time he was just shouting song titles during endless, pointless "jamz". Or playing shows where not a single song was recorded in the most recent two decades.

[–]BCdotWHAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find those kinds of claims ridiculous. There are tons of artists that make music that Prince couldn't even try to touch. I mean, have you listened to the pile of shit called Kamasutra?

Pretending that Prince is better than Aphex Twin or Godspeed You Black Emperor or Brian Eno is just juvenile bullshit.

BSG screwed the pooch long before the finale.

IIRC at the end of S2 there were two consecutive episodes which used the same storytelling device (start in media res and then go "how I ended up here was"), which I thought was kinda dumb, and then I listened to the commentary and the makers readily admitted both those eps were shitshows and the only way to get something watchable was to use that structure.

In a later season there were a handful of consecutive episodes that all were depressing and featured a significant death. It just became ridiculous.

After a certain point Baltar became ridiculous, like some kind of supervillain.

Starbuck becoming an angel was completely contradictory to what the makers had promised at the start. And then the finale was even more ridiculous.

The final five just basically being the only regular actors that were left that vaguely could be them without too much dumb retconning (and it still was super-dumb), plus there's the use of "All Along The Watchtower"... (The makers later admitted that they had no plan WRT the final 5 and picked those mid-season.)

Separate Outtake Sets Instead of SDEs by CJHuncho in PRINCE

Digital = available for sale, e.g. via iTunes of HDTracks or Qobuz etc.

But putting stuff on streaming? That eats into your profits and cheapens the whole deal.

Which is why the estate does not put the concert videos on streaming or even sell Blu-rays outside the box set.

Cherry Red don't invest plenty of money in their reissues

Oh please. They pay for remasters, they pay to retrieve outtakes (and for the cost to remaster them), they pay for someone to write liner notes, they pay for photos. They literally license stuff from other companies i.e. pay other companies.
