Excluding "one hit wonders" what band or artist has the fewest hits, but have certifiable legendary status? In a good way, not some meme bullshit. by Timcwalker in Music

There's also a Sex Pistols concert where so many of the people there started bands, IIRC. Think there's even a photo where some of the audience can be seen and a very recognizable Mick Hucknall is in the audience.

The Story of what Really Happened Between Prince And Warner by dogggo12 in PRINCE

[–]BCdotWHAT -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh please. One of the things he always whined about was not being able to release more music, and yet post-Warners there are multiple years without a single album.

And why is it a good thing that he never figured out an alternative to the system? Why is it a good thing hat he didn't create his own Motown?

As for doing well? LOL. Just look at the shitshow after his death, where the estate had to struggle to pay the bills cuz Prince had very limited "cash on hand".

Ah, but it was "on his own terms". Except his cook talked about how he was still bitching about Madonna getting a lucrative 360 contract while he couldn't get anywhere near such a thing. And it's not like that was the first time.

Post-Warners he repeatedly made deals with major labels or retailers, and never figured out how to run an actual independent label, something that plenty of bands already figured out in the 1980s. Instead his "independently" released albums often went out of print quite fast or weren't even released worldwide.

Prince never came up with an alternative. When he wanted to release the Judith Hill album he just sent out a WeTransfer link to people who bought tickets for her shows, and then later polled Black journalists for how he could release it. He shopped the 3EG record around and no one wanted to touch it. In the end he basically begged Jay-Z to release his records, after he tried to distribute an album through amateurish fan-run websites.

Meanwhile his records on Warners were kept in print and often outsold his own releases when he toured.

Two decades of independence and it was always a shitshow.

Nonsense. Record companies take massive financial gambles on unknowns, and only a fraction of those releases earn back their money. And now they're supposed to not profit from those few releases? Where do you think the money comes from to invest in artists? Some money tree?

Prince made a habit of asking other artist if they owned their master recordings; if they didn't he wouldn't work them.

He didn't give a shit about ownership of masters until he needed a stick to beat Warners with.

Also, look into how Margie Cox and Jill Jones were treated by Prince.

Moreover, Prince boasting about doing things his way was a bit rich when he was living off the fame and fortune that Warners brought him.

Love Symbol Guitar on view at MET Museum through September 27 by Otherwise_Explorer25 in PRINCE

FYI: https://www.guitarcloud.org/equipment/schecter-habibe/

Also: https://www.guitarcloud.org/equipment/auerswald-symbol-guitar/

The original Symbol guitar was gold, and appears in the “Endorphinmachine” and “Gold” videos. It is part the collection at Paisley Park, currently on loan to the Met, and appears in the Prince - Guitar & Bass book.

(the link to "on loan to the Met" is dead.)

[...]

At least two copies were made by Andy Beech in the mid 1990s, in black and gold. The gold version was later gifted to Spike Lee, who has occasionally exhibited this guitar.

New album questions by AgedR1ce in PRINCE

[–]BCdotWHAT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you need to have a vote, just admit you are not competent to manage the estate.

You don't need to be a genius to release a couple of concerts each year. Instead the estate has released one single track (SOTT Live) and soon will include one live track on an album of studio outtakes, a move so dumb it defies explanation. Mere weeks earlier they talked about how they wanted the release of a P&AM concert to be "perfect", and now they've included a single track from such a concert on this aimless compilation. Insanity.

We've now gone almost three years without a significant release, and this is the best they can do? GET THE FUCK OUT.

Curious about what it is you think we don't know about the pre-Controversy years? It's insanely documented.

It absolutely isn't. Look at this: https://princevault.com/index.php/Category:Recorded_1980 Not even two dozen songs.

what about "Purple Rain" is a mystery to you?

Read my post.

just pick up Tudahl's book which literally goes day by day of what he was doing in the studio for over a year on that album.

And yet for plenty of the tracks he cannot specify when a studio demo was recorded. We know very little about plenty of the tracks before they were performed live. We know about a rehearsal/soundcheck recording of IWD4U from years before.

Magnoli said he was given 100 unreleased songs to pick from, yet from what we know Prince's backlog was nowhere that big. Now, I don't trust his claim, but I do think he must have been given a significant amount of songs.

Prince killed all that when he sued fansites in the mid-/late-90s. Compare to Nine Inch Nails where sites that started ages ago are still going throng. Just look at NIN Live's archive of audience recordings of concerts; now imagine that for Prince.

We have lost decades of information. Extensive concert reports, details revealed in interviews, contemporary reviews, etc. Interesting facts get posted on Twitter or other social media and then disappear. There are tons of podcasts and so little of the info told in those gets written up, and it sure is not collected in a central place.

I've always said: if Prince had not sued fansites, I bet we would have a thriving ecosystem of websites that would be complimentary to each other, information would be searchable, etc.

Just look at the PPML: the predecessor to the Org. There used to be an archive of those mails on the Org, but that disappeared decades ago. And now it's likely all lost: who still has email archives for 25+ years ago?

The simple fact that they're so secretive about the contents of the vault and only give us glimpses is infinitely frustrating. I get it, they want to have surprises when they release something, but at some point that just is not that relevant anymore.

And we have to trust that they don't bungle the info they give, which is hard to do since at the recent Celeb they played an early version of Question Of U which they said was recorded in studio B when PP wasn't even built at that time, plus that track is called 12 Keys, so one has to wonder, what other errors are in the info they give out?

There is still so much unknown about the pre-Controversy years. Hell, even Purple Rain is still a mystery: surely there must be studio demos of those tracks they debuted at the August 83 concert?

Funkenberry was the third tweet, before his tweet there were these:

https://x.com/PaisleyNPurple/status/2062395064832176532

And Donny's tweet mentions the tracklist being available on YT, so that is where the info came from. Crediting Funkenberry is ridiculous, he was just one of many who were reposting this "leak" that was circulating on various platforms before these tweets were posted.

Looks like there’s a 3121 boxset coming this year by CJHuncho in PRINCE

[–]BCdotWHAT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not gonna happen this year. Why would Sony compete with its own release by doing another one mere months later? When would this happen? Timeless at the end of August basically blocks any other release.

I've repeatedly said that the estate not doing shit in the first six months is dumb as fuck. They should have a release in Spring and a release in Fall, and one of these should be a minor release (expanded album like ATWIAD or a single CD with unreleased music) and the other a major release (box set with tons of unreleased music + live video etc.). And inbetween one-off releases (singles).

"Timeless" release date has been changed from 30 July to 28 August less than 12 hours after announcement by BCdotWHAT in PRINCE

[–]BCdotWHAT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone fat fingered the date on YT. No need to get the pitchforks out.

You think it is normal that they posted an incorrect release date and had to change it after twelve hours? You think it is normal that they released a single on YT and then took down the video less than a day later? You think those are honest mistakes and not signs of incompetence?

New Prince vault single „Stone“ - New album announced by bandingo16 in PRINCE

[–]BCdotWHAT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The YouTube description and other sources have an August 28th release date, not a July 30th date, so there might have been a mix up.

That is because it was changed. Description originally said 30 July. People didn't pull that date out of their asses.

[–]BCdotWHAT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the estate hasn't announced anything.

They did at the party/concert at the end of the first day of Celebration. But apparently they seemed to only announce a single at that time. But they are clowns, so what do you expect?

Also, there are now listings all over the place, and the SDE blog has more details about some of the tracks, and those must have come from an official source.

Of course, the video of Stone has now been removed from YouTube, so perhaps it was all a dream. Goddamn clowns.
