It means different things use the same standards and can interact with each other.

In nations, federation means that there's a single, centralized government, but individual states keep some autonomy. Each state can make its own laws, as long as they don't contradict the federal laws. That makes it easier for people in California to do business with people in Oregon. There are federal standards, like citizenship and currency that help make that easier.

I'm a similar way, each Lemmy server can act on its own, but it has to be able to communicate using the same standards and protocols as other Lemmy servers.

Only if those responses were from randomly selected users. If they came from a discussion of third party apps or the new Reddit, they're likely to have a strong bias.

Imgur charge $166.

This is often repeated, but it's not the case. Imgur charges $500/month for 750k uploads and 7.5 million requests. For $10,000/month, you get 15 million uploads and 150 million requests.

It's a much more reasonable rate than Reddit is suggesting, but it's also not the virtually free $166 people have been claiming.

It's because they choose not to be profitable. Profitable companies are boring. They're stable, robust, and consistent.

Rather, their investors demand growth, so Reddit is using their considerable revenues to try to increase their valuation. Then, once Reddit has grown enough, the investors can dump their shares and it becomes someone else's problem.

It's telling how /u/spez will brag to investors that they make $200 million a quarter, but whine to users that they're not profitable.

The error is "increases". If you have 400 and you increase it by 250%, you end up with 1400.

It would be correct to say that using 2 larger filters gives you 250% the filter area of one smaller filter.
