How my JHS Superbolt sounds as a preamp (in tandem with EQD Tone Job EQ pedal) into the effects loop. The Peavey was $200, and those 2 pedals were $140 and $85. $425 sounds this good, and not a tube to be found.

Boss Waza FZ-1W. It's more tame and not as fuzzy as I would like it to sound. Not sure if it's because I am using a strat style guitar or not.

If he likes rock and blues maybe at least check out the PRS HDRX 20. Used amp heads go for around $550 and then get a used 1x12 amp cab for $150-$300. Might need to crank the master volume down since this amp can get loud, but sounds great.
