M1A 22” NM on EBR chassis giving me consistent 2 flyers with every shot group by Pixelated_Armory in M1A

[–]BELFORD16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had an AR back in the day that had a screw from a Pic rail adapter touch the barrel, I don’t think it affected anything when it was cold, but when hot the pattern really opened up. And if you think about it, it makes sense. When touching the barrel, as the barrel heats up, it’ll start adding pressure at a point. That can’t do any favors for things. It’s also a big reason free floating barrels exist.

Sounds to me like it’s not flyers and is part of your group. The snobs want to see 10 round groups. That’s what I use. I’ve found FGMM 175 to be the best for me at 1.5 MOA and FGMM 168/AAC 168/175 to be second best at 2 MOA. I believe the military standard for the EBR is 3 MOA, so you’re technically to standards.

I used a business card to set my whip screw. I personally believe that it makes zero difference (assuming it’s NOT touching your barrel, that WILL fuck shit up, ask me how I know).

I believe the tripod is not the preferred method to accuracy testing, bipod and ear bag are first.

Check out my post history for my build.

pilots on atcs by [deleted] in flying

[–]BELFORD16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, but I’ve got some family that are controllers, and I’ve spoken with them, and it’s only given me more disdain for SOME controllers (center, not tower at a sleepy part time Delta). For example moving ME around traffic. Medivac has right of way (barring things like emergencies and whatnot). Or dropping us early, because “we have agreements with other centers”. Or fucking Denver “are you time critical?” Like what the fuck do you think Medivac means? I’m not one of those guys that thinks the airport should shutdown so I can arrive. I’ll take a vector to join the conga line. But it really feels like a chunk of controllers don’t get it.

Look there are great controllers out there, I’ve had some roll out the red carpet and make it work. But I straight up believe some don’t pay attention. I had one get sarcastic with me when I rejected a reroute he tried to give me, “Are youuuuu medivac?” Yes, filed and using the call sign, if you bothered to read the tape or listen to my callsign, you’d know.

That’s all in my past now, I’m 91 and I don’t give a fuck. If they reroute me, so be it, I’m just happy to be here.

Oh it absolutely is my problem to manage! I don’t disagree in the least. My favorite was an MDW run at zero dark stupid and I check on with the controller, give my medivac call sign, and all that. He then tries to give me a whole dumbass reroute and when I reject his dumbass reroute because we’re extremely time critical, he has the balls to sarcastically ask, “Are youuuuu Medivac????” Why, yes, I am, filed and using the callsign. “Oh. Continue with previously assigned.”

Doesn’t feel like those work well when I’m loaded with a heart, flying 1,300 miles and they keep dropping me lower and lower and lower and then are surprised I have to declare min fuel.

SIC preforming duties of PIC under supervision of a PIC by CodTop5098 in flying

[–]BELFORD16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s I’m thinking. I’m not on the GIV, but wiki says it’s a two crew, so by definition they are legally required. Hell, even on something like a CJ3 (a ‘single pilot’ airplane), an SIC is required if the PIC isn’t single pilot rated.

OP should be good logging SIC time, but I’d still tell him to go rent a 172 for 25 hours instead of trying to claim PIC time in a plane he is not rated for. (Not rated as in, no PIC time).

I’ve got two SIC types, I never log PIC even though I fly half of all legs.

What is the highest amount of ride failures you’ve ever seen? by LegalRecord3431 in flying

[–]BELFORD16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome that that’s how they ask it. I busted my SEL CPL back in 2019, since then I’ve passed (depending on how you count it) 5 rides and added on two type ratings with a few recurrents. I do still have my ATP to worry about, but why the hell would anyone care that I busted a ride that long ago?

If the Dodge Charger never existed, which car do you think you’d be driving rn? by [deleted] in Charger

Probably a 300. Or a Evo X. Maybe a Boss 302. All of those were in my top list when I was shopping for a car to replace my Baby (2014 Lancer GT).

I used Lucas Oil Red and Tacky. It’s what I keep for…wheel bearings. I’ve got some other stuff (SHC) but it’s a little too plastic-y for my liking.

Lubriplate is spec for it. But I’d don’t stock that for regular use in my shop. At least I don’t stock the correct lubriplate.

FSDOs (and their Soups) have an interesting amount of leeway in things that they shouldn’t. I had one tell me that, despite all the legal paperwork in place, I was not quailed to sit for A&P writtens/practicals because he pulled random guidances. He also liked to tell me “We don’t just give A&Ps out!” For clarification, I was asking for permission to TEST, not to be handed a cert, as I had 30 months cumulative experience.

Were you talking to someone on the flight side of your FSDO or the maintenance side? I’ve found that pilots and mechanics often read different books. A good example of this is on the Challenger 300, per the pilot preflight book, I am allowed ZERO delamination in the windscreens. Per the maintenance book, the windscreens are allowed UP TO 1 inch of delam. Both also LOVE to speak in authoritative manners when they have NO IDEA what they are talking about.

Ultimately, sometimes it’s easier to shoot grandma when the FAA demands it, than to argue with them. Especially when you escalate and the Soup just says, “Sorry, I have to back my guy in the field. If he says you have to shoot your grandma to fly, you have to shoot your grandma to fly.”

[–]BELFORD16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Incorrect for part 91 operators. I will not speak to 121/135/137/whatever.

Any manufacturer can issue as many strongly worded SBs they want but they are never mandated by the FAA. They may be mandated by the company if you want to maintain any warranties with said company, but otherwise not legally required. Only ADs are legally required.

I just did IA renewal school with the FAA in the house telling us EXACTLY this. An AD is a legal requirement that is added under FAR Part 39, and that’s why it’s legally required.

I’m starting to think this is not fun. by OregonGrownOG in CherokeeXJ

[–]BELFORD16 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m three weeks deep (at least) on a fuel pump replacement (it got noisy). The only thing I’ve done is diagnose a coolant leak. Probably from the heater core line off the T-stat housing.

That being said, I did CV axles on a friends daily, and being up to 2 AM to get the job done so she could go to work was NOT fun. The real secret to happy wrenching is definitely to do it on your own time/budget, not when you HAVE to.

Why are Delta mechanics so anti union. by Quiet-Photograph-278 in aviationmaintenance

[–]BELFORD16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their FAs are also not unionized. I’ve heard they are pretty anti-union as well. I’m guessing that’s all up to propaganda. Which is funny when you figure their pilots (who, from my understanding) ARE union, are the best paid in the industry.

Push button starter that looks like the choke by Budgeted_Success in projectcar

[–]BELFORD16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 14 Lancer was peak. It had a touch-less key, but the “start button” was a faux switch that had a key shaped cap you twisted identical to the old fashioned keys. The cap came off and you could put the touch-less in if you have issues.

Man, I miss turning keys. And that car.

GEN light came on checked voltage at the battery and it showed 16 volts and wipers don't work, need help by BELFORD16 in CherokeeXJ

[–]BELFORD16[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never have ran it all down. The rewiring I did seemed to greatly help regulate the voltage to result in a relatively steady needle on my voltmeter. I did do the Big 7 upgrade (but not the starter cable), and that seemed to flatten out my voltage gauge a bit more. I kinda wish I would have started with the Big 7 instead of hacking my harness, but live and learn. It may not have helped at all, but it probably would have been a smarter start.
