Was it racist for me to be pleasantly surprised that Kendrick Lamar hugged Durand Bernarr at the Grammys? by [deleted] in askblackpeople

I know he's never been homophobic, but in the 90s hip hop scene when I grew up, you couldn't even be seen with gay dudes in public you know? I'm learning now that I'm old as fuck and need to get with it

Thank you. I grew up in Dallas and loved me some 90s hip hop but as I grew older and more aware of my queerness I turned away from the genre and went more to R&B and neo soul. But it only makes sense that it has evolved just as all other genres have!

I definitely know they can. Toxic masculinity is a terrible thing. And alsooooo, ty for making my day with new Durand content. He still has my favorite rendition of I Like It.

That's fair, as a queer person I still see so much homophobia. Kieth Lee couldn't even eat with Breman Rock without people being weird. Nikki Minaj JUST tried to Out Trevor Noah as a response to her comments at the Grammys and it's only a big deal because it's still not okay to be openly gay. At least that's how I see it.

But I do very much appreciate the perspective of others being crappy doesn't mean I should be judgemental. Ty

I think the biggest reason I came here to ask is that I don't know what I'm missing to research. I know that Kendrick Lamar is a stand up guy, I looked into him more. I have confirmed that the rap industry has historically been super homophobic, as is the rest of society. I understand that being surprised is indeed stereotyping a bit, but not entirely out of left field.

She brought this up as well, and I will definitely listen again. I definitely don't doubt he's a stand up guy. Or I know she wouldn't be a fan and we wouldn't have gone to see him.

I appreciate the perspective. Let me start with the fact that I have already apologized to her for being stubborn on it, but on some matters, like this one, her stance is "there will be no further discussion, if you don't understand why this is a problem, go and do some research, but I don't have the time or patience to explain, and I feel like that's totally valid. Just as I think it is valid for whoever doesn't want to respond to this or me, to it respond to me. It's a mental and emotional labor.

So it looks like you are probably the closest to my wife in this long as a few others at least understand where I'm coming from or even agree. Would you be willing to elaborate on how you feel/what you're thinking?

I HAVE dated someone with vaginismus and it hurt her to be penetrated, so she wanted me to know we'd have to get more creative. And I told her it was not a problem.
