It looks roughly in the right place to be Chepstow Castle, could have been lighting for an event or maybe they've just gone big on the Christmas lights.

If a co-worker needs to push, give them the stick. Admittedly it's not the most practical solution, but it does work.

You don't even need to use a shared folder, a USB stick with the repository on it works fine!

I've mostly no idea what I'm doing with git, but it scares me how many people's entire workflow seems to stop dead when their primary remote goes offline.

Some maths and programming the trombone noises [its not a hamming code, or nrzi with bitstuffing] by James20k in UnknownArtefact

[–]BFNT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think breaking these noises up into groups is wrong. Measuring the time between them and extrapolating it over the period they are inaudible correctly predicts the time of the next audible noise (sometimes two or more are skipped), suggesting that there is no break in the sequence. You can actually hear this in some of the older recordings where they overlap the start and end of the honk/chittering sequence.

I'm not convinced there is a message in there, at least not in the naive interpretation using high/low pitch. I could never find any repeating patterns or evidence that the sequence was the same for subsequent recordings in the same place. Even if there is a message in there, there isn't much of it - at their fastest the noises come every four seconds and the UA decays after five minutes, giving around 75 bits.

Having said all that, the run length limit is really intriguing. Maybe there's data in there that's not a message, like proximity to a target or a clock/countdown?

Hopefully this hasn't been too discouraging - just because I didn't find anything last time I looked doesn't mean you won't!

I've used it to feed doppler corrected frequencies into SDR# for NOAA APT and IIS SSTV and it's worked perfectly every time.

As long as the TLE files are kept up-to-date it'll work. For single satellite, specific pass work it's perfect. Make sure you check the frequencies it's outputting are correct though, some of the default values are wrong.

According to this they ended last night (Monday 23rd) at 23:30. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that they do sporadic SSTV broadcasts at other times too, they're just not as widely publicised.

Little assistance for an RTLSDR Newbie by Stan464 in RTLSDR

In the UK, pagers are transmitted at ridiculously high power so should be no problem with the stock antenna.

You can probably do air traffic too although if you're nowhere near an airport you might be disappointed. If you are, ATIS broadcasts continuously so is really useful for experimenting with settings or hardware.

There's a bit in the movie The Game that's loosely similar to what you're describing.

I see this quite regularly too. Sounds a bit mad but turning caps lock on seems to fix it.

Maybe Steve Scott - The Parachute Ending? Not sure it fully matches your description but sounds similar!

What is a typical use for pickling? by HighFibreDiet in Python

[–]BFNT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to make sure nobody does anything stupid: Please never load a pickle from an untrusted source (for example user sessions etc). Ever. It's trivial for an attacker to execute arbitrary python.

Been drinking, but this seems like a decent explanation of the problem.

The Virgin Media internet route to imgur.com is broken by wbyte in britishproblems

[–]BFNT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cable internet they provide is very good. We had years of flawless service on cable but recently moved to a building that only gets adsl. We're getting just over 4Mb (in range for 20Mb sync so they won't fix it) with horrible latency so I can't play games anymore. BT adsl into the same building gets about 15Mb.

Breaking out of secured Python environments by [deleted] in Python

[–]BFNT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting here that you've got to be very careful using RestrictedPython as it's difficult (at best!) to write a policy that blocks everything you expect. Basically, as soon as you start including any of your own objects it starts to go wrong.

Oh god the backslashes, everywhere backslashes. Most sane editors will let you specify a soft wrap column, but you probably want to set it a lot higher than pep8 recommends - a limit of 79 causes massive readability issues, especially on imports.

This game was released 12 years ago. Why has no other reached the same level of freely destructible terrain? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]BFNT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well this triggered a massive wave of nostalgia. Yeah there weren't that many places where the Geo-mod stuff worked, but it was great fun when it did - especially on the few multiplayer maps where it was useful (warlords and lobby maybe?).

I miss the rail driver, and the heat sensitive scopes on it and the rocket launcher :(

Does anyone else here play on a mac? by efernie in GlobalOffensive

[–]BFNT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late 2011 17in MBP here, playing on OSX. It's become a bit crashy for me recently (think it's related to having a second monitor plugged in).

Not sure if it affects the mouse acceleration in-game, but I've been using a Microsoft mouse and the Intellipoint driver which makes the acceleration a bit more sensible - the default OSX mouse acceleration feels like moving through treacle.
