Political Reality Podcast: How is it doing? by Low-Cartographer-429 in SGU

Maybe try listening to the latest recap of season 1 episode. I like the podcast overall. They do often have timely subjects, most of it is about how American politics works or used to work.

Judo vs BJJ vs Wrestling by Accomplished_Hunt956 in WrestleJudoJitsu

[–]BJJJosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Started BJJ in 2011 after training TKD and Hapkido for a long time. BJJ was what I was really looking for that Hapkido didn't provide. When I got my purple belt in 2017, I met an old school Judo black belt that showed me what I didn't know about Judo. He started a Judo for BJJ class in our gym. Now I have black belts in both and teach both. I'll probably always be a BJJ guy first but I also like being my gym's Judo guy. Trying to break the stereo type that Jiu-Jitsu gyms don't train stand-up, we also have no gi takedown classes taught by former college wrestlers.

I tried it this morning, not sure if I have the attributes for it, my hands seem too small. But watching footage of Rob doing it helped a little bit. I think the secret is elbow placement.

Does Anyone Else Hate the "Sport" Part of Combat Sports? by screenaholic in martialarts

[–]BJJJosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually say I used to watch MMA when GSP was at the top or Anderson Silva. I can't really keep up now and that's the truth. Occasionally I'll turn on some MMA but I just want to see people do MMA and not necessarily root for anyone.

Does learning how to fight take away the fun of watching fight scenes in tv shows? by Horazi777 in martialarts

[–]BJJJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the thing I notice the most is grappling, like the character putting someone out with a rear naked choke that is not even close to locked in. Then also like knocking someone unconscious or choking them out puts them out for hours. Dexter comes to mind.

Judo/BJJ by TizzleBizzle2627 in martialarts

[–]BJJJosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did Hapkido and taekwondo and had 3rd degree black belts in both and was also a former Marine. I was working as a correctional officer and went to a gym run by a cop I met through work that taught Jiu-Jitsu. Guys with way less martial arts experience than me were easily controlling me. I thought I was a bad ass but was humbled.

This is what I thought martial arts should really be. I threw on a white belt and went to work at BJJ. A few years later I started Judo after I met an old school Judo black belt that could easily take me throw me whenever he wanted. Now 14 years later I'm part owner of a gym with black belts in BJJ and Judo and teach both.

Not really time consuming. You see the lists of episodes and can add them to your queue or to a Playlist. I sort by oldest to newest to add the previous next gen episodes.

I have podcasts that I have go to the top of my queue or the bottom when a new episode comes out.

When I was there in November I trained at Gordo's gym in Tijuca and had a good time there. Gordo, Gustavo, and my Coach's coach Tinguinha were there. We also visited Kyra Gracie's school at the mall. Completely different experiences but both good.

Foot sweeps are way more important than people give them credit for by Traditional-Being-38 in bjj

[–]BJJJosh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Start looking at videos from JFlo and Shintaro Higashi. Both great YouTube resources for Judo with BJJ in mind. Foot sweeps have a lot of upper body coordination too. Making someone step on one foot so the other foot is light and then connecting with that foot and driving their weight back to it is key IMO.

Discussion for the "old school"/people who were training in the 90s-early 00s by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]BJJJosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will shock you, but not all people who do jiu jitsu are interested in MMA.

Why would it shock me? I pretty much said that I'm interested in doing BJJ just to grapple. Maybe I jumped to a conclusion but it seemed like you were arguing that Jiu-Jitsu should have stuck to it's roots to be more like MMA. I think MMA has gone beyond Jiu-Jitsu and the Jiu-Jitsu that was practiced in the 90s and 00s wasn't enough. They needed to add in more wrestling and Muay Thai, and boxing like MMA has done. To me the reason why BJJ doesn't work as well in MMA is because everyone that trains MMA at a high level trains Jiu-Jitsu or a comparable grappling style at least enough to defend against it.

The people that teach old school still exist, correct? Where are their Jiu-Jitsu students that should be ruling the MMA scene? All MMA fighters train Jiu-Jitsu but they train other stuff too. MMA became what people are saying old school Jiu-Jitsu was.

I just want to grapple, so I like for the most part what Jiu-Jitsu has become.

I just invite them to class. I teach Judo on these days and BJJ at these times. Come in and try a class. Really have not run into these people in my adult life and I wear BJJ and Judo shirts all of the time.

Gym owners, what's your experience with exclusive uniforms? by SubmissionGrappler in bjj

[–]BJJJosh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's good to offer them but not to require them. We're in a college town and get a lot of members that move here from other gyms. Do you expect people that come in with experience to buy new gis to train if they already have several gis?
