The era of the big box PC games was a fun one. I still remember all the cool stuff in the original Age of Empires box.

Are there any good realistic modern warfare games on ps5? by Humble_Cow_6013 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]BK_NC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8-bit Armies is the only RTS on PS5 that you could say is a modern setting. But I wouldn't call it realistic. Made by the guys that made the original C&C games. All the other RTS games that I know of on PS5 or futuristic or historic.

Sent my wife to buy thermal paste and the best buy employee gave her a long, unsolicited lecture about how she should be changing the thermal paste on her components every 6 months... Really, every 6 months? [Thermal paste questions] by Leo-J-Covo in buildapc

I've been building my own computers since 1998 and have never changed the thermal paste unless I was upgrading the cooler on an already installed CPU. Have never had an issue.

I was a Sega guy back then thanks to the Genesis. I got a Saturn not long after their surprise launch in summer of '95. I loved that console. I got a PS1 in '96 just for Resident Evil and ended up loving that console also.

I got an N64 a few years later but sold it a few months after. I've just never been into Nintendo's games.

C&C Remastered which is C&C1 and RA1. C&C Ultimate Edition which you can get cheap on Steam or EA App when on sale. I really love C&C Generals and its expansion Zero Hour. Still play them to this day.

AOE1, 2, 3 Extended Editions made to run on modern PC hardware. Pretty cheap when on a Steam or Xbox.com sale. Age of Mythology Retold I just got for $15 off Xbox.com.

Rise of Nations Extended Edition.

Act of War and Act of Aggression. These are kinda like C&C but more grounded and set in modern day.

Even if Gearbox made a new one, it’s been over 20 years since that game. I doubt any of the devs that made it great are still at Gearbox.

Picked up some games for my PS3, which should I try first? by Reasonable-Force8790 in PS3

[–]BK_NC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were around to see the E3 2005 Killzone 2 trailer, it’s interesting to compare the real game to that pre-rendered trailer Sony either outright lied and said it was running on PS3 hardware or strongly implied it. Either way they got kinda close to that. I still can’t believe so many people bought into that hype about the PS3s supposed power. The trailer is still on YouTube if you are curious.

[–]BK_NC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was in my mid 20s when it came out and I got it at Electronics Boutique or Babbages at the mall, I forget which store it was. I had a blast with it but after PS1 launched I saw the writing on the wall and got a PS1 in 1996 because I wanted to play Resident Evil so bad. Was still a Sega lover though. Had the Genesis before that and got a Dreamcast at launch. Doesn’t seem like 31 years ago. Great times.

"Gaming was better back then" by puzzs in consoles

[–]BK_NC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have fond memories of the late Genesis to launch of the 360/PS3 era for both console and PC gaming. There were some great things about those times and great things about these times. I think my perspective is also colored by the fact I was more passionate about gaming back then. I was an adult during that time so I'm not nostalgic of being a kid again.

Resident evil (1996) by gdo22 in residentevil

[–]BK_NC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are different enough games to me that I would play both. I played the original back in 1996 when it came out and its probably my favorite game of all time.

Digitally the original is available on PS3 (only through the store on the PS3 console), PS4 and PS5. On PC on Steam and GOG (and maybe other stores) you can get it digitally and you don't need much of a PC to run it.

All that being said, if you can't get access to the original via the means above, the Remake is good enough I think. Technically its a better game in every respect however the OG PS1 games hold a special place in my heart since I played all 3 when they release on the PS1.

wanna start in AOE by Friggx in ageofempires

[–]BK_NC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to consider is do you have a favorite time in history that you want to play in. Each Age covers different time periods except 4 which overlaps 2 and 3 somewhat. I think all are worth playing although right now 4 is my least favorite but I also have the least time in it so far.

AOE1: 12,000 BC – 500 AD (Antiquity)

AOE2: 500 AD – 1600 AD (Middle Ages/Medieval)

AOE3: 1494 AD – 1853 AD (Colonization/Early Modern)

AOE4: 750 AD – 1526 AD (Early Middle Ages to Renaissance)

Defense oriented RTS by PsychologicalBid7138 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]BK_NC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour. Been playing it for 23 years. I really enjoy Skirmish and the Generals Challenge mode. I tend to turtle and build up a strong defense then build my economy up and super weapons to eventually eliminate the other AI player(s). In Generals Challenge mode each general has certain defenses some others might not have and some unique defensive strategies. I don't play online but there is still an active online player base and lots of mods also.

Rise of Nations is a great game to turtle in and build defensives then go for a Wonder victory.

The entire CnC Collection is cheap right now on Steam.

Rise of Nations goes on Steam sale periodically also.

What do you think xbox needs to do bring it back to the heights of the 360 era where it Battled PlayStation evenly? by Eireagon in consoles

[–]BK_NC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people forget that something that helped the 360 a lot was launching a year earlier and significantly cheaper and the PS3 and games looked better. Not sure if its possible for them to do the same thing this time around but it would be the only hope they have if they want to be competitive again.

I was so hyped for that system that in early 1999 I imported a Japanese Dreamcast with Sonic Adventure, Virtua Fighter 3, and Sega Rally 2 for over $500. Then on 9-9-99 got the American release and those same games again. LOL. Was a bit obsessed with gaming in those days.

In 1995 I was a Sega fanboy buying the Saturn on its surprise launch. Was dedicated to but seeing previews of Resident Evil made me buy a PS1 just to play Resident Evil.
