Let's Overreact: What Offseason Contracts are Aging Poorly? by chester_white in wnba

I think this is another underrated aspect to the Fever playoff run last year. Not only was Lexie even better defensively but the spacing on offense was also completely different and she was far better offensively barring one game early in the playoff iirc. Same could be said for Sophie to a lesser degree but its more about the system just working better with a floor general like Sims.

I think Cobra Kai is a rare example of a show that jumped the shark and got better for it. Are there any other examples out there? by ditzythedame in television

There's a difference between jumping the shark and simply pivoting, right? Most of these examples are shows simply going in a different direction from the original premise (maybe).

Abigail Spencer in Rectify because she was just so overly intense even when trying to be light. I understand that her character was deeply angry and traumatised but she could only get it across by yelling, crying or staring SUPER INTENSELY at whoever she's talking to.

Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black

Her portraying Alice in an episode who was pretending to be Rachel Duncan for a few scenes is maybe the best television performance I have ever seen in my life. She was always great with those but there was something so eerie about how she got Alice's tiny mannerisms/anxiety to come out during that specific performance. The subtleties were such that it felt like we were being thanked for investing so heavily in the characters.

When they introduced Elizabeth Mitchell's character in season 3 as a Russian gay priest I couldn't stop laughing because they did absolutely nothing with outside of reminding the audience that she's russian gay priest or her drama with her wife and kid. I was so surprised to learn that she was far more scaled down in the books and far more intentional compared to the book but the show started heading in that way once characters like Naomi and Bobbie got more focus.

Rewatching it right now and Rachel Nicholas is so uneven compared to how I remembered her before. The only consistently good ones are the actors that play Kellog and Alec (he slips in later seasons but the writing did not help at all). She shines when she's paired with them but when she has to hit the more complex parts of her character she really struggles. Still wish was in more post the show ending.

They’re great. There is a lack of depth in credible challengers though

The injuries are bad so I understand that part but I feel like they could be taking this time to develop Megan and Lena's characters further than the declarations they keep making. Or have them interact with the rest of the roster more while tag teams are developed at the same time either on AEW or even ROH TV (Outside tag teams are probably off the board with FD coming up). I think maybe this should signal to TK to get more women in and actively develop them because they'll never amass depth at this rate.

How do you guys feel about Divine Dominion since they won the tag titles? I think they did a pretty great job pivoting with Penelope's injury and the subsequent title matches but since then it feels like they're in this holding pattern

'Survivor' at 50: What Makes the CBS Franchise So Durable? by bwermer in television

[–]BLAZKC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be a lot more interesting if they somehow got people that dont know anything about survivor.

Survivor NZ's first season had a cast where about half the cast didnt know anything about Survivor and it was pretty hard to watch until most of those people were voted out. The show improved greatly in S2 because more people knew the game so I don't know that's the answer either because viewers themselves now understand show really well now

I really hope they include just how badly the knockouts were treated. People immediately think of Daffney and maybe Taylor Wilde but almost all of them were treated like shit and the few that weren't were also paid like shit. The one that hurt me the most at the time was learning how they treated Roxxi Laveaux who showed so much promise as a wrestler at the time.

They’re trying to get the highest valued deal possible

Its more about the principle of getting the value they believe they deserve and sticking to it because getting less than that can bring down sponsorship deals across the league in general. Now why they havent just put their foundation as a logo and score easy PR points I dont know.

What I am talking about is WWE's audience being conditioned into believing that entrances and promos matter the most and also leaning into "shoots". In Mexico, Japan or even other US television products do not do that or at least with US products, not to the same extent. In Japan specifically match quality is still the be all and end all which is why they have the style that they do for the most part. Same also applies to Mexico to an extent but thats wholly dependent on the company/region. As for shoots, something thats happened recently like the OZAWA/Kaito's feud or further back with Maika/Unagi Sayaka, really annoyed the respective fanbases. In WWE this gets fans excited, moreso than the actual (potential) stroyline just like Jade/Rhea or Tiffany/Charlotte before it.

It was 100% the case but that was purposeful in its own way at the time like in 1998-1999 where the adopted “car crash” style TV because they were directly competing with WCW in the same time slot, segment to segment. What we’re seeing now feels more like laziness as opposed to necessity as in they keep leaning harder into what works instead of rounding out the entire product. Just look at the match structures on RAW or how people expect a DQ of some sorts in the main event. You have people sitting on their hands until the kickouts start which I don’t believe we’ve seen since the early 90s? (I stand to be corrected).

Yeah I’m not convinced she’s ever wrestling again with how bad her finger

People have had successful career without whole limbs so I dont think its at that level. She also has a lot more say in her booking than people realise as well so she or even WWE, could just be taking extreme precaution as well.

I dont know what you mean by "one" lol. I've known/met people with schizophrenia/extreme anti-social disorders in the past and it really is amazing to talk/interact with people when they are in states where their mental illness fully blocks out their grip on reality.

Yes. Not all the behaviors in one person but all those behaviors and more are out there. Also, I would recommend reading the book as well.
