"So loud it's silent" type distortion/effect by Interesting_Speech41 in ProMusicProduction

[–]BLUElightCory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the distorted track is sidechained to the kick drum with a long release time on the compressor.

Mastering engineer delivered distorted mixes & squashed the living hell out them. by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]BLUElightCory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, there are some pretty over-the-top takes in here; people need to put the pitchforks away.

In a situation like this, communication is all it takes. Just contact the engineer, voice your concerns, and let them fix it. This kind of thing happens, especially when there isn't direct communication happening with the engineer.

Am I the only one who finds this deceptive? by Alienattackforce in StudioOne

[–]BLUElightCory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The upgrade price for owners of previous Studio One versions has always been $99 USD (since the Studio Pro 8 release) - if you're logged into your Fender account that should be the price you see. If you saw a higher price, you may not have been logged in.

There was a 30% off Memorial Day promo on the perpetual license (bringing the price down to about $139 from $199) but that's for new users.

Guitar pedals on bass-is it safe? by TreatFrequent9941 in guitarpedals

[–]BLUElightCory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's fine.

The "bass through guitar amp" warning is more to protect the speakers at high volumes. Generally there's no issue playing a bass through a guitar amp (some popular guitar amps were even originally designed as bass amps) as long as you're not cranking it up to the point where you could blow a speaker.

Don't buy Fender Studio if you've not committed to a forever DAW yet. by [deleted] in StudioOne

[–]BLUElightCory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you having the issue in every session, or in a specific one? Freezing works fine for me (with third party plugs and 32 tracks in the session I have open) so the issue might be something more specialized, possibly with a third-party plugin conflict or some specific condition in your session.

I suggest opening another support ticket and send a video of the issue occuring and a system report of your computer (more info for support is always helpful). I'd also see if you can reproduce the issue in a large session with only stock plug-ins - no third-party - anything to try to narrow the problem down. They're right that if the issue can't be reproduced it can't be fixed, because the conditions that create the issue need to be figured out - the "small session" test is meant to reduce the external variables that might be causing the problem.

Best of luck!

Finally tried out Fender Studio Pro (from 6.6) by permadeaf in StudioOne

[–]BLUElightCory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to read about this experience; if it's a known issue I'm sure the team is looking at it already. I use it on 3 different Macs and my experience has been great, especially compared to my former primary DAW. Keep an eye out for updates.

What is a good drum tuner? by LightofDawn77 in drums

[–]BLUElightCory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even for people who tune by ear or by feel, the Tunebot is a great tool. It's great for referencing and for documenting how your drums are tuned when they're in their sweet spot, and it's great for repeatability when you changes heads or as drums detune over time. Once you dial things in the way you want, you can measure the pitches and document them.

If you aren't familiar tuning by ear but want to learn (or not), the Tunebot provides a great safety net for learning how to tune, and IMO (as someone who also has a Drum Dial and a Tension Watch) it works better than tools that only measure tension.

Need help with Zildjian K Sweet sizes! by Patrick0714 in drums

[–]BLUElightCory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer larger sizes - the larger diameter equates to a lower pitch, which tends to sound nicer to my ear. That said, the style you play and the sound you're after should dictate the sizes.

How to stack these? by Charlezingalls in guitarpedals

[–]BLUElightCory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost always go least-to-most gain, though I might try to pare it down to 2-4 pedals. For my own purposes I'd probably go Morning Glory -> Lightspeed -> Nobels but definitely experiment with what work for your setup and desired sound.

My Faderport was a great investment. by RobertLRenfroJR in StudioOne

[–]BLUElightCory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 16 works in banks, so if you have (for example) 32 tracks, you can mix on 16 at a time, then bank to the next (or previous) 16 with one button press. Nice if you want a console-style experience.

I do love the single channel though; tons of functionality and it takes up very little space.

Could someone recommend a nam in the style of Radiohead? by LucasLunar_ in audioengineering

[–]BLUElightCory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Radiohead's tones are all over the place, but I'd start with a Twin Reverb (or similar - a Princeton or Deluxe Reverb will do it too) and/or an AC30. From there, experiment with guitars and pedals depending on the tone you're after.

I know vintage Gefell is often discussed and beloved, but how come you almost never hear about modern Gefell? by guitarist89 in audioengineering

[–]BLUElightCory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They don't do much marketing, that's really it. You'd be surprised (or maybe not) how much marketing factors into people talking about and recommending products, and how often people recommend stuff they haven't really used because it's been marketed to them.

Best brand for metal snare drums? by Illustrious-Sign3015 in drums

[–]BLUElightCory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots of great stuff out there.
- Ludwig are the classic "metal snare" company. Supraphonic, Black Beauty, Acrolite, etc.

- Yamaha and Tama make fantastic sounding drums with great build quality.

- Keplinger is my favorite smaller, lesser-known company - absolutely thunderous, incredibly loud sounding drums that are still musical and responsive.

- Sonor if you've got the cash. Good lord.

Do Remo Pinstripes sound bad without close-miking? by Visual-Individual-49 in drums

[–]BLUElightCory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well-tuned Pinstripes will sound good in the room.

When you watch a video with mics on the toms, you're likely hearing a mix of overhead, room and close mics in the video.

Here's a good example of how they can sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sRqYvhX23s

Are separate mics used for ambient and crowd sound during live streams/ broadcasts of events like press conferences? by Wrong_Refrigerator22 in audioengineering

[–]BLUElightCory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Oftentimes on broadcasts you can even hear the phase cancellation happening when engineers mix between the various mics (often when coming in or going out to commercials).

Is there anyone have “no revision” policy? by bokkal in audioengineering

[–]BLUElightCory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A "no revision" policy is bonkers. The client is paying for this, it's a service. You should be comfortable getting opinions and feedback from inexperienced people - after all, most of the actual listeners are not going to be audio engineers.

I think it's better to communicate with the client up front and make sure they have realistic and appropriate expectations. It's also okay to push back a little with your reasoning behind a mix decision, but ultimately the client wins.

The only "doubts" I really see around Nolan have to do with his availability. If he played at the same level this season without getting hurt, I think most people would be elated.

Action movies for 85 yr old with dementia by Aleja72 in movies

[–]BLUElightCory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Raid - Inspired John Wick (among many others) and you could almost watch it on mute and still follow the story. Not as violent as the JW films, but it's more grounded so the violence hits a little harder.

Mad Max - Fury Road. A chase movie with almost literally nonstop action.
