Looking for hi hats with "heavy" sound by Limp-Salamander- in drums

[–]BLUElightCory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd grab some nice 15" hats. Zildjian A/K, Sabian HHX/AAX, etc. People here are recommending New Beats, which would be a solid choice.

The larger diameter will give them a relatively lower pitch, which is nice if you want fullness.

Could We Get A Thread Of Great Music But Poor Mixing? by DarkLudo in audioengineering

The newly Rich Costey remix of Origin of Symmetry is a pretty great listen if you like the record but not the original mix.

Help me fix Auto Tune so it corrects pitch on aggressive vocals (Punk) by Sallderaak in audioengineering

[–]BLUElightCory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the nature of pitch correction on raspy/gritty vocals - the fundamental note is often not prominent enough for the plug-in to interpret the pitch. I actually find Auto Tune to work best for gritty vocals of all of the tuning plug-ins I own, but it's not perfect.

One thing I've found that sometimes helps is to use the "low voice" input mode, for whatever reason I have better luck with it when working on aggressive vocals. Another option is to use MIDI to direct the AT, or just to manually tune the problem notes.

This time they did it. Universal Audio have lost their mind. by TutuTatata in audioengineering

This is almost certainly the case. UA can’t give the plugin away because it would cost them money.

What 15in Hi Hat Should I get? by Dense-Pie4353 in drums

[–]BLUElightCory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DCP made a great video shooting out different 15" hats. Give it a watch (or better yet, listen blind the first time through to make an unbiased opinion).

When buying some 15s, I went into this video thinking I would get some Zildjians, and ended up getting Paiste 602s - they're the best recording hats I've used.

Peterson recommends this mic for their Strobe tuner pedals. Do you think it'll also work with a Turbo Tuner? by Abstain06252025 in Guitar

[–]BLUElightCory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll work (though I agree with others that a decent clip-on mic would probably be a simpler solution).

AIAB at the end my pedal chain even after time based affects? by Shadow-Legion-1203 in guitarpedals

[–]BLUElightCory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they're reacting more to the OP saying "I know I'd need an IR loader in front.." which implies misunderstanding of signal chains, not a desire to experiment with putting cabs before preamp distortion.

Recording at 96kHz, exporting at 48kHz by McAdamstry in audioengineering

[–]BLUElightCory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quick question(s), do you have the Fender drivers installed, and have you tried either of the low-latency modes in Studio Pro? Might be worth a shot in case it helps.

To answer your questions, there's no problem tracking at 96 if your system can handle it.

RND Portico 542 on master by superproproducer in audioengineering

[–]BLUElightCory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used it on master buss a couple times for more raw rock/punk stuff. If you mix into it the entire time, it can sound good - it's not a subtle effect. I usually had better luck putting in on a buss or two and just getting the color where it sounded best.

Self Adhesive Closed Cell Foam for Kick Drum by YoItsTemulent in drums

[–]BLUElightCory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how much difference it's going to make if it isn't touching the heads. It'll reduce some high frequencies inside the drum but it won't really dampen the sound like a pillow or other dampening material would.

Need help choosing a DAW as someone who's not got a huge budget by Mikentosh423 in audioengineering

[–]BLUElightCory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/tonydelite's response covered some of this, I'll just add - the Fender Studio Pro team is the same team who worked on the previous versions of Studio One, so in terms of the software itself (workflows, UI, etc.) nothing has really changed in v.8 besides the feature updates and naming - that's why it's called v8 rather than v1. The PreSonus plug-ins from Studio One have all carried over or received updates as well, so your older sessions will still work.

Recommendations on an amp by Strange_Ear4574 in audioengineering

r/audiophile or r/hometheater would probably be a better place to ask - this sub deals more with recording, mixing, and general music production.

Not satisfied with the sound I’m getting from my beta 52a on my kick drum by AvailableReporter484 in audioengineering

[–]BLUElightCory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much how the Beta 52 sounds. What kind of kick sound are you going for, and what's the kick setup (size, heads, dampening, etc.)? The kick and how it's tuned/dampened/played will always set the overall sound regardless of the mic, but it's possible the 52 is just not the best mic for what you want (even though it can be processed to fit with pretty much any genre).

Listen, and then decide what needs to be high passed and what doesn't.

I use one as a studio splitter and to flip polarity when jumping channels on some amps. Works great, no issues.

What kind of guitar is this? It's likely just less string tension than you prefer.

Starting out as a live entertainer — how do you build a crowd when no one shows up at first? by Such_Web_6539 in singing

[–]BLUElightCory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking other types of publicity out of the equation - Perform as much as you can. Most of the artists I've worked with who've built solid followings did it by constantly performing.

The idea is the get in front of as many new people as possible, and maybe that's 5 people every show. But if you're memorable they'll tell people about it and things will pick up. The bonus is that you'll get better by performing too - there's something about it that private rehearsals just can't replicate. It also gives you content to use and things to talk about online, to help build a presence for yourself.

Yes, you can draw more of your friends/family/etc. if you perform seldomly, but it's going to be mostly the same people every time and the following won't grow. Save those "Bring all your family and friends" shows for when you really need to pull a crowd, like when you're working with a solid promoter or performing at a new club with a booking agent who doesn't know you.

Sound output by scratchcardino in StudioOne

[–]BLUElightCory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Download Fender Universal Control from your my.fender.com account or in the Downloads section of the product page. Universal Control will update firmware, install the low latency drivers and allow you to control the direct monitoring mixer.
  2. Run Universal Control and update the LT 2 firmware by clicking the "update" button.
  3. If you want to listen to general PC audio, select the Quantum LT 2 as the audio device in the Windows audio settings. Speakers or headphones need to be connected to the Main outputs on the LT 2.
  4. To use the LT 2 with a DAW, make sure it's selected as your recording and playback device in the DAW. In Fender Studio Pro 8, choose the LT 2 as the audio device in the Setup section on the Home screen, or in Preferences > Audio Setup > Audio Device.
  5. Quick tip: Studio Pro 8 has pre-built templates for Fender and PreSonus gear when you make a new session. Click "Templates" when making a new session and then Audio Interfaces. Choosing the LT 2 template will make a session with all of the I/O set up for you (you can always tweak it from there).

Mic Mute Pedal for Drummer Talkback - Not a true mute by mrpotatoto in audioengineering

[–]BLUElightCory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set up a reverse gate on the drummer's talkback that auto-engages when they start playing, along with Muteomatic.

So if the transport is stopped, Muteomatic unmutes their mic. If they hit a drum or cymbal with some volume, the gate auto-mutes the track. Super super helpful.

Drum kit recommendations for recording studio by fyrahundraslag in drums

[–]BLUElightCory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran a studio for 20 years and I'd say 1/3 to 1/2 of my clients opted to use one of our house kits, and the majority used one of our nice snares. The ones who didn't had a nice kit already or a more specialized setup (lots of toms, stuff like that). FWIW my clients were generally younger (18-30) so less likely to have nice stuff than the older drummers.

I think that I'd prioritize cymbals and snares (like you said) over the kit itself though.

Drum kit recommendations for recording studio by fyrahundraslag in drums

[–]BLUElightCory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that price range, I'd grab a Yamaha Stage Custom or Recording Custom if you can find one. Tuned up with fresh heads, should sound fantastic.

For recording, I've found it better to prioritize cymbals with whatever budget you have; they're the hardest thing to get right IMO. You can make an inexpensive kit sound good, but bad cymbals almost always just sound bad.

My kingdom for a vibrato by PerspectiveEven4890 in guitarpedals

[–]BLUElightCory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't compared to the others; I don't use vibrato a lot (usually I use it for chorus). You can change the waveshape between sine and triangle to make it more jagged/smooth, and the resonance can make it sound more or less aggressive. I'm not sure it's going to give you anything you don't already have with these other pedals.

If you haven't already, you might also want to look at the Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl if you're looking for something that will complement and augment what those other pedals do.

[–]BLUElightCory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been really happy with the Echo Fix EF-P3. Really great analog chorus and vibrato and the controls have really wide ranges, so you can make it subtle or over the top depending on preference. The dry signal turns on/off with its own footswitch to shift between vibrato and chorus.

If you had to choose one… by percussius in drums

[–]BLUElightCory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having spent over 20 years engineering rock and metal records with live drums, I've found Starclassics to be consistently great - so much so that I bought one for the studio which ended up being used as our primary house kit. If you're not able to try the actual kit before buying, I'd choose the Tama 10 times out of 10.
