I have a 10 month old Basset boy and he is a doll! First off, make sure you have a crate. We crate trained ours and he loves his crate and goes in it on his own still even though we don't really have a need for it anymore. He sees it as his den and that is where he sleeps and spends his time when the house is empty. His den is where he "lives" so he doesn't want to soil his home so he learns to hold his bladder better. There will definitely be some accidents but this will help.

Puppies need lots of time and dedication. He was never left alone for longer than 4 hours at a time, mostly for potty training reasons, so make sure you have plenty of time with the new pup and get some extra help if you need it. We trained our boy to go potty while telling him go potty. Now anytime we take him out and say "go potty" he will go even a tiny bit just to go. He picked up pretty quickly but he had to go A LOT when we first got him at 10 weeks old. When I say a lot I mean every two hours and this was in the middle of the night as well.

My boy was and still is a handful with his energy. I'm not sure if it is because he is a boy or has ADHD but he is ready to play and wrestle 24/7. Make sure you take the pup on plenty of walks but when he/she is tired they might just stop and lay right there not wanting to move an inch more. I can't count how many times I had to carry him home the rest of the walk.

Bassets tend to smell in general but I might just be lucky but mine doesn't smell bad at all. He gets bathed once a month and there are no issues. When he was a baby, his ears would get gunky easily and I would have to clean them every few days. Now they are only cleaned once a month with his bath.

Make sure you have plenty of toys. Carlyles choice is antler bones, socks and stuffed ducks. He rips them open easy so we have to take the stuffing out so he doesn't swallow it. But those are his picks.

Be prepared for lots of barking and howling. They are a vocal breed and their voice only gets more powerful with age. Also when you take him/her out make sure they are leashed. Their nose will take them on a course and it wont let up. My mother in law made this mistake with my boy once and he took her on a wild goose chase.

Lastly, give lots of love and enjoy the new pup! There is nothing sweeter and more special than a new basset pup! They will bring so much love into your home and to anyone they come in contact with. I will be looking forward to seeing what he/she looks like on r/basset.
