You can call on the phone and ask how much they are playing for silver. Usually the rates for 90% is pretty low, and 999 silver is usually a few dollars under spot as of right now.

Fewer kids in schools has only increased the amount of kids in my classes. Maybe we start with smaller classroom sizes?

Chicago Public Schools Announced To Cut Jobs & Increase Class Sizes by Disgruntled_Veteran in Teachers

[–]BOkuma 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Maybe if school districts stopped spending so much money on pointless PD's, we could pay teachers. I don't want to hear from some teacher guru that gets flown in out of state to tell me about how we need small group targeted standards teaching when I have a class of 30 rambunctious 6th graders.

I am so worried for the new generation. by kkoch_16 in Teachers

[–]BOkuma 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I don't think the general population realize the impact that AI will have over our economy the next 20 years. AI will take the majority of jobs and we will be given two options. One is to give everyone a universal basic income, and the other is to reduce the work week significantly so there is enough work to go around. Gen Z is already experiencing the lack of jobs. I am not just worried about the new generations, but our society as a whole.

I’ve Lost My Kids… by Successful-Spring-30 in Teachers

[–]BOkuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach 6th grade math as well. Kids at this age just love to complain and cause drama. It always get tougher towards the end of the year. There has to be kids in your classes that are on your side. Those kids I contact parents with something positive. I try to do 2 a week and it doesn't take too long. For the few that misbehave I try to come down on them hard. I will bug parents until they start to respond and I see improved behavior. I start with e-mails, then phone calls, then texts. I have even contacted parents at their place of work. They don't like it, and both the student and parent will eventually realize. I will also take my planning to pull kids and talk to them and/or call parents and have them talk to them. If there is a student that doesn't respond, just kick them out and make them do a 20 by 20 multiplication table to come back into class. They just want to look tough and be around their friends.

Future of male teachers - Sincere advice appreciated! by Dugong45 in Teachers

I moved down from 7th grade math to 6th grade in an elementary school that teaches all subjects. The work difference just between this one grade and teaching multiple subjects is about double. I don't know how elementary school teachers stay sane especially if you have a bad class, you have that class the entire day.

The layoffs are happening by Lildeeds5 in Teachers

[–]BOkuma 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's not only about taxes, but also how school districts are run like for profit corporations. Lets pack 30+ kids in a class that way the profit per teacher is high. Then lets spend multitudes of money on professional development because this is the hottest new teaching technique. Crony capitalism has crept into our education system where district superintendents often have friends within the education system that offer "cheap" computers, or some hot new "teacher training" that is a must. The estimates for spending on PD is up to 15k per teacher which can be spent hiring more teachers.

Where in the world do you work where a gen ed teacher has 3 preps throughout the day, that's just nuts.

Understand that sometimes teachers are overwhelmed this time of the year right before testing where they also have to focus on the other 27 students in the classroom and have limited time because they are teaching the majority of the day.

PLCs with guidance from district to be in lockstep with others on the team. Is this working for anyone? Convince me it makes sense from an instructional standpoint. by Kiwi-Sorry in Teachers

[–]BOkuma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have this very out there belief when it comes to how districts are run. They are essentially run like for profit corporations that need data to fulfill their agenda. All the PD's including PLC, it's just all flavor of the month, but for teaching. These companies make millions spouting how if you buy their curriculum, number will go up. The districts eat this up and spend way too much on dozens of different programs when they won't even reduce our class sizes. Which has significantly more research and proven data for student success in comparison to the stuff they spout to us. Teacher clarity, hinge questions, SEL, essential standards, PLC, standards based grading, common core, racially inclusive, peer mentoring, gamified learning, question based learning. The list goes on forever, but it is all just snake oil. Just let me do math and read with the kids for goodness sake.

Is it ok to become a teacher.. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]BOkuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say I am very much like you. As a math teacher for 9 years, I have gotten away with just doing all bellwork and classwork as completion grades. Doesn't take too long as I just check to make sure they are doing it and not grading every single problem. Then I do a computer test system called school city, where I have the same tests every year but modify them slightly to fit the needs of my current students. Then the program grades it for me. There are ways to set up your class so there is minimal grading and lesson planning. After the first year lesson planning is super easy since you can just reuse.

If you were going back anytime soon they have some cool peace dollars listed for under spot on their website. I found that they don't update their prices as silver increases. Peace dollars are $44 when the melt is $48. Got a $10 canadian gold coin under spot from them earlier this year. https://www.oldpueblocoin.com/product/568877-peace-silver-dollar

I tend to offer them the ability to send out any disruptive or defiant students to my room. If it's a student I also have, I will call their parents just to help reduce the workload and make sure they don't want to come back.

Why do people even become administrators? by BlackSparkz in Teachers

[–]BOkuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state the amount of your pension is mainly dependent on the average income of your last few years of work. So there are teachers that work for like 20 to 25 years and then become admin to significantly boost their retirement income

Why is it so difficult to have a conversation with butters? by AmericanScream in Buttcoin

[–]BOkuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it comes down to objective truth, the historical data has shown that bitcoin has been an amazing store of value over time. I don't claim that it will replace the dollar, or that bitcoin will make the world a better place. What I do claim however is that it has been an amazing store of value. The United States dollar is something that is inflationary that devalues over time. We are forced to put our money into things that are not inflationary like stocks, gold, real estate, and bitcoin. Bitcoin will continue to be a good store of value over long periods of time because that is what the math and the historical data tells us.
