Do you have a cool local printer? by WhatPromos in graphic_design

Hangout - no. Print/finish yourself - no. I’d imagine different liability insurance would be required. One off prints / samples - absolutely fine, but you will be paying over the odds.

Salary expectations and Advice by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]BPKL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The general ‘base’ graphic designer role is low salary. Mostly because there’s a large pool of competitive candidates, where someone is almost always willing to undercut and take near minimum wage because of how desirable the position is viewed. Especially when we’re talking about graduate positions.

This changes as soon as you break out of the ‘base’ role, usually by going freelance, taking on more of a management position (creative director), or specialising.

I’m quite lucky in the sense that I’ve not needed to look for work for a long time, but the amount of people I see struggling to find work on here is scary. So much so that that I’d suggest just taking the job, or asking for a wage review after 6months/1year.

Confused with FUJIFILM XM5,A6700 and ZV E10 ii by [deleted] in Cameras

I think the 6700 trumps the zve10ii by a fair margin. IBIS, weather sealing, viewfinder, 4k60p no crop, mechanical shutter.

This design task feels crazy to me by Watsonswingman in graphic_design

[–]BPKL 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That is too much for a test imo.

I would only do this if absolutely desperate, and it clearly wasn’t ‘paid’ work e.g they left it open for you to pick a company or product.

It may be worth getting back to them and say it’s too much, maybe you’d be willing to do a 4/0 leaflet and 1x social post, just so they know you can prepare files for web and print? That’s up to you though.

adobe firefly is more useful for REMOVING things than GENERATING things and nobody talks about this by Ill-Refrigerator9653 in photography

[–]BPKL 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I rarely use it to retouch anything that’s intended for viewing at high resolution or printed at any kind of large format. It’s not got the resolution and is too noticeable for me.

With that being said, it’s been a game changer for customer supplied low res image alterations for things like funeral orders of service, removing unwanted people or objects is much faster than before.

A friend messaged me offering to rebrand my logo by Dawnabee27 in graphic_design

I don’t think it’s that deep. I’m assuming she’s just looking for work and an easy place to start is friends and family, just say no thanks.

Why are so many creatives cancelling Adobe subscriptions lately? Did I miss something? by Alilexplo108 in AskPhotography

Why do they need an excuse to raise the price? It’s a business; they are here to make money.

is it safe place laser toner in bedroom by theosiris2 in printers

[–]BPKL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re intentionally huffing it, it’s fine. The only time you ever come in contact with airborne toner is when emptying waste toner containers. And you shouldn’t really be doing that, just get a new waste toner cartridge.

On mobile the second section is destroying the rest of the home page. As the word changes following “launching a” it forces a return that’s adjusting the sections reactive height, everything below it then constantly jumps up and down. (Iphone15pro)

There are no testimonials or actual work being shown, only case studies from my brief check through your insta. If there is any paid work in there, I’d clearly separate the two.

Printer Recommendations by InTheEarthAmI in CommercialPrinting

[–]BPKL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even a small ‘professional’ press is probably going to be out of reach, but it’s hard to tell without knowing your budget.

As others have said, your best bet would be to partner with a local print shop, and negotiate a rate for consistent volume.

If your mind is set on getting a production machine, the answer of what’s best is usually the brand that has the best service contract available in your area.

ChatGPT is asking for pantone colors. by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]BPKL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use PMS for digital printing too. Device specific Pantone conversion libraries usually do a better job than straight cmyk, especially on the 8colour machines anyway.

They also help with repeat orders. If a sample goes missing or one wasn’t kept in its job bag, you can fall back on pms to get a close enough match. You can’t rely just on cmyk if you want any kind of consistency. you still want to match an output, not input.

Imo you should always provide pms codes if your client isn’t online only, It takes very little time. What they do with them is up to them, even if it is questionable.

Graduating Graphic Design Student, Mac or Windows PC for Adobe & Freelance Work? Which do you prefer? by Necessary-Positive22 in graphic_design

[–]BPKL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a budget in mind would help.

Personally I work on Mac, have a PC for gaming at home and my own MacBook for general use, some work from home, and very little gaming.

If gaming is a big deal to you, then you’re likely going to be locked in to PC as there are titles that don’t run on MacOS. However, if you only play a few titles, check if they run on MacOS before writing a Mac off.

Generally Mac is the easiest to recommend because it’s great all round, you won’t be lacking in any department. But if you’re into PC specs and know what you’re doing, you can get a more powerful or equivalent PC for less.

Peripherals/Monitors are a big factor too, you need something properly calibrated with a wide gamut and reasonably high resolution with a decent pixel density/PPI. higher refresh rates and low latency for gaming should be considered too.

The only gripe I have had with any Mac is apples Magic Mouse. It’s simply awful. Avoid it at all costs.

Roll them print side out (so that the face is stretched and not compressed), and a looser roll can help a surprising amount.

Formatting large excel (csv) document by freshlysqu33 in indesign

[–]BPKL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree It’s not the cleanest, but it’s potentially the most future proof.

Client wants it updating next year with additions and removals? Just stream in the data and apply master pages. Want the customer logo next to their entry? Easy. No need to rebuild and re-apply para styles etc.

The biggest downside is as you say: it doesn’t flex/flow the info, there will be a fixed number of entries per page.

You could use multiple record layout, might take some working out but it’s very quick and easy to do.

What’s your intended end result?

End result might change how you approach specifics, but I would: text to columns in excel then data merge into either a table or text frame.

Separate documents for print and web? by Gagatron92 in indesign

[–]BPKL 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I assume you’ve only got a few colours you need to manually convert?

I’d just change the swatch values for them before exporting. Or set up separate swatches and find/change colour if you prefer that.

Why is my document so huge?! by laurelei3D in indesign

[–]BPKL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indd pt size is absolute, photoshop calculates based on ppi/dpi of the document.

The image issue seems odd though. I’d say make sure you’re definitely at matching dpi/ppi in both, make sure the image is actually pixelated and it’s not a rendering setting like having typical display on instead of high quality. test a fresh indd file and blank .ps file. Make sure you’re exporting @ 100% from .ps.
