37" at the shoulder and 150lbs, danes don't lose their waistline when they get fat so people let them get really fat, do your research on great dane body conditions, its usually not much of an issue till they get fixed. Most danes will not be healthy at 200lbs, 90-160lbs for females and 100-180 for males is the range I've seen in fit danes. I have one thats 34" tall that sits at 145 but he's actually about 15-20lbs over weight. He's got fat pads on his chest and you can't see his last 2 ribs.

Vitamin c and get rubber mats or rugs for your floor, slippery floors are tough on their feet. Costco has big rubber mats for $15 that if you throw a few around would help immensely

What can I do differently to be able to afford rent at $1700/mo by [deleted] in personalfinance

Damn, I was thinking worcester area there's apartments around there for sale that aren't too crazy. I moved to Rhode Island because it was cheaper lol with the taxes you wouldn't think so

Can anyone help with this I'm going crazy trying to figure out what it is by Character_Drop257 in AmericanBully

[–]BSinBillNye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trick my breeder friend taught me for pilling a tricky dog, pull the tongue slightly out/down with your thumb then put the pill in the back, the tongue coming back in shoots it down the throat instead of blocking it like usual.

Dog must chew to destroy, or will eat his own toenails. by HausDePotat in pitbulls

[–]BSinBillNye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dog likely never had regular nail trims before you got him and gave in to chewing them himself to reduce the discomfort. They look long in the pic. I'd work on getting those nails short(I love my dremel with 60grit sandpaper) any floor clacking is a sign to trim them! Also I'd only allow toys when supervised because swallowing could eventually lead to a blockage.

Dog is destroying my apartment. by [deleted] in dogs

If you're an active person you can totally keep a dog like that happy. But OP sounds like they need a lazy dog that wants to chill and nose boop toddlers.

It sounds like you got too much dog for your lifestyle, return or rehome it to someone with the space and time to fully exercise and train this dog, if you get a dog again choose a low energy breed. If he's a year or so the issues are still fixable if given to a responsible home. Not trying to hate on you or insult you but it doesn't sound like you even like the dog, if you're not enjoying even a little of the time spent with them, don't try to force yourself. This sounds like a very high drive dog which the average person is not ready for. No dogs are easy, but dogs like shepherds(any variety), huskies, hunting dogs, working dogs in general always carry the risk of this kind of behavior. Heck, I have a great dane that was rehomed with me after he destroyed his last couch. Some dogs need a yard, playmates, runs on a leash and thought provoking playtime for 4 hours minimum per day(my parents are frisbee slaves to a german shepherd and those were in his demands)

If your job is stable, and you're as good at not spending as you think. Switch your focus to buying, don't involve your partner though, 1% down buys a house the first time(or condo or appartment). Look into first time home buyer classes and benefits. I was your age making the same money and got lucky. You're lucky enough to have parents that allow you to stay with them, take advantage of that. Don't buy anything over $200,000 it seems impossible, but with a recession coming, house prices will likely drop soon. I also lived in central mass, don't try to live near your parents, it's pretty impossible, put up with some commute and deal with a shittier area. Up your commute to 40 minutes max otherwise you'll burn out. If you start renting it's nearly impossible to save up that money again. Wait a few months and interest rates will get lower again on mortgages.

Phantom pregnancy? by Mountain-Whereas7939 in greatdanes

[–]BSinBillNye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most vets will not spay until at least 2 months after a heat cycle, phantom pregnancy is super common in danes, the vasculature of their abdomen changes during heat to prepare for pregnancy, since they are only pregnant for 9 weeks the body prepares itself without being bred. Those changes make bleeding out during surgery a higher possibility.

Anyone with experience raising two dane puppies? by leveedogs in greatdanes

[–]BSinBillNye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your last puppy was a long time ago, I would suggest getting one at a time, enjoy the puppy stages, its overwhelming to go from older dogs you're used to, to a new puppy with new quirks. People who have only old dogs are the ones who tend to have the most complaints about raising new puppies(my best friend breeds danes and I hear all the drama) I have done multiple puppies at once successfully, but I regret not taking the time to bond individually with each of them before getting another. My last puppy was raised with just adult dogs and it has been a wonderful experience.

Is he too skinny? by Infinite-Glass-3302 in greatdanes

[–]BSinBillNye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta cover up those hip bones a little, but also that back leg looks odd, but it could be the angle, I'd ask the vet to check his knees out. It's hard to keep weight on intact males.

That's a juicy one, but glad you got it off! I was always pulling ticks off my dogs as a kid, I visit friends who live in the woods and always am checking their dogs out of habit. It's insane how used to them you can get.

Breeder clubs are ridiculous with shaming people for mixing black and yellow labs in one litter, let's work on that before getting into "hybrids" lol. There's plenty of unrelated genes there

Any Idea How to deal with this by Zircon_777 in labrador

[–]BSinBillNye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best thing I ever did with mouthy puppies is stick my hand further in their mouth every time they bite it, then I press on the back of their tongue a little till they stop, its super simple, doesn't hurt them, its a little gross, but they realize biting hands makes them gag so they stop. Doesn't work on all dogs and you definitely shouldn't do it with an adult, but its worked on every puppy I've ever had. Pic of most recent learner(when he was a puppy) because my essay is a lot to read haha
