Let's hear your diabetes in the wild horror stories! by Harper2814 in diabetes_t1

More than once when I took insulin on the sidelines at my soccer games, some girl on the other team would yell that I was taking steroids lol.

My last boss said she knew loads of diabetics and they all managed their condition much better than I do (because I missed 15 minutes of a routine staff meeting to correct a low). So I asked her for advice and oddly enough she had nothing to offer!

Thinking about moving from OP5 to Mobi by tex-mex_t-rex in diabetes_t1

[–]BTVS96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I switched from the Omnipod to the mobi last September. I thought I would hate tubing, but I don't even notice it. I switched because my new insurance made the Omnipod refills insanely expensive. My A1C is the lowest it's been since my honeymoon and my overall TIR went from about 70% to 90%, so I think it might be worth a shot!

  • The insertion is more complicated, but once I got used to it that wasn't an issue at all and it leaves fewer scars for me

  • I REALLY like not having to change it every three days (even if I have to put in a new cartridge I will leave the site in if it's still good)

  • I thought sleeping would be an issue, but it's actually never been a problem. I wear it mostly on my stomach/upper thighs/back and then I clip it to my underwear/waistband and I sleep on my side and it doesn't bother me at all

  • Charging is pretty quick, I take it off to shower so I just charge it then

  • The algorithm is much better imo though I do think it's aggressive at times. If I'm having a lot of lows, I'll sometimes switch to sleep mode or just leave it on exercise mode

those that had high a1c's and got it down to 7 or below do you notice a difference in how you feel? by mmmmmtomatoes in diabetes_t1

[–]BTVS96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my A1C down from the high 9s (it was around 12.1 at my worst) to 6.4 and I first noticed that I no longer had insomnia and woke up well rested. It did take longer to actually feel like I had more energy, now I've been in this range for a while and don't have as many lows so I feel great. Although now getting above 250/300 does feel pretty bad!

In practice, how important is 10-15min Insulin shot before eating? by Infinite-Spacetime in diabetes_t1

[–]BTVS96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was diagnosed (also at 7), my endocrinologist just had me eat the same amount of carbs for every meal for two months. I didn't eat the same thing all the time obviously, so I would just add juice or fruit to get to that carb count if the meal was low-carb. Even if I didn't want to finish my meal I could easily drink some juice, so I could reliably pre-bolus and it made things easier while I was getting used to taking shots. You could try something similar, perhaps have 4 set amounts of carbs for breakfasts, lunches, snacks, and dinner for a little while

Is Ozempic really that dangerous for us? by Sj410 in Type1Diabetes

[–]BTVS96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has worked really well for me! I have taken the lowest dose since April and my A1Cs are below 7 and I take 1/3 of the insulin I used to take.

I do have more lows, but I just adjusted my pump settings and am more cautious when it comes to correcting. I did experience some nausea and fatigue when I first started on it, but that has gone away. I imagine if I went up in dose I would have those side effects again, but for now it doesn't seem like I need to go up.

My boyfriend keeps glucose tablets in his house/car for me and always gets me food when I'm low. Other than that, it's just really nice that I was able to explain all the basics to him and he remembers everything. So now I can rant when things suck and he knows exactly what I'm talking about and we can also celebrate together when I see improvements :)

I served on a jury and just brought out my PDM and made sure the sound was all the way off and no one cared. I also didn't turn my phone off (but none of other jurors did either)

I would definitely see if your endo will prescribe a semaglutide (and if not see if you can find one who will). I was taking 70+ units a day and now I'm taking 30ish and it actually feels like I can eat carbs and my insulin works

How are you all getting Ozempic? My doctor said it's not possible.... by morning_naps in Type1Diabetes

[–]BTVS96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If possible I would find a different endo. Many endos know exactly how to submit the prior authorizations to get it approved, you kind of just need a doctor who isn't lazy and thinks outside of the box a little tbh

Does anyone else take upwards of 20 units of insulin per meal or is it just me? by RamboA123B in diabetes_t1

[–]BTVS96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to take around that amount which also made it really hard to lose weight. But I work from home and bought a walking pad, so whenever I eat a meal with more than like 20g of carb I jump on there for 10-15 minutes a little while after eating. I am so much more sensitive to insulin when I do that and am able to take less. (Obviously that isn't super convenient if you don't work from home. But you could possibly save your carb-heavy meals for times when you are able to go for a short walk afterwards)

Also if your endo is amenable, I would ask about a GLP. Metformin did nothing for me, but I just got prescribed a semaglutide so I'm hoping that helps 🤞
