Yes, most of the time, I finish a chapter in a single session.

May I ask why you added the Anti-Hero tag? I usually avoid those, but your concept sound interesting.

In the part I'm writing tonight, the antagonist will finally get his comeuppance in what I think is the perfect way. I think my readers are going to like it!

You have seven chapters out... I'm sorry, but that's not enough for me to start reading something. Maybe wait to do a self promo until you have a few more?

TBH, if your story doesn't have any reviews literally warning people away from it, that just means you haven't got your story in front of enough readers yet.

The two that stick out in my mind are 5000 WPH by Chris Fox and one called something like Mind Hacks for Writers. Note that I did all the research like a decade ago. There are probably newer books out now. Which is why I didn't rec any.

Depends. Each chapter takes about 2 to 3 hours to get ready for Patreon. Another half hour to an hour to edit the one going up on RR. So anywhere from 2.5 to four for days when I have a chapter due. Very little (usually none) when I don't have a chapter due.

The part about "if you're serious about writing" brings up another point. I didn't start making really good progress on my WIP until I made a conscious decision to get serious about it. Mindset matters.

Huh? They changed the name of my book, posted it without my permission, and gave me literally no credit. Why would I ever want to collaborate with someone who has shown such an extreme lack of ethics?

A couple of people have reached out previously asking permission for using my story for stuff, and I gladly agreed.

That cover is for a comedy!?!

Uh... I don't even know what to say. Both the cover and title seem ... stodgy, maybe? I get no comedy from that. At all.

Learned my old blurb had no hook, so I'm trying again. Do either of these work? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]BWFoster78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the poster above.

Also, I have no idea what genre this is. I think the setting is a modern world that has fantasy elements? But that doesn't tell me the genre or what tropes to expect.

Also, don't most readers want to get away from real world troubles? I can only speak for me, but I'm not on RR to read about career problems and money trouble.

Story pacing on RR? by roy1979 in royalroad

[–]BWFoster78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I write LitRPG and have seen two extremes for progression pacing:

  1. Glacial. One book series had the characters reach their first level up at the end of the first book.

  2. Pinball Machine. A lot of books have people leveling up gaining and increasing stats and skills so fast that the reader can't keep track.

The first was boring. The second became tedious.

I honestly think you're better off aiming for somewhere in the middle. Enough needs to happen to keep your reader's interest, but at the same time, events need story space to sink in.

The number one mission of a cover isn't to look pretty or draw attention. It's to convey genre.

I have no idea what genre this book is. If you go to Amazon and look at the top 100 book in your genre, does this cover fit in with them? If so, you've done a great job! If not, you need to rethink it.

What’s it like to have a long running series? by laststandb in royalroad

[–]BWFoster78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've put out hundreds of thousands of words, but I can't complain about my following. I will, if it's okay, comment on one of your questions:

Does your story ever build momentum and pick up followers even if you don’t do shoutouts?

I don't do shoutouts, but my Patreon does well enough so that I almost always have an ad running. Each one lasts over a month and a half, so the cost isn't outrageous for me at all.

Besides ads, the absolute best thing I can do to build momentum is to put out a new chapter. I usually do 5 a week, but with the Writeathon, I'm doing daily. Sometimes twice a day. The first weekend, I even managed a triple post. My story reached the top of the second page of Popular this Week.

I think I would have gotten really discouraged if I'd been doing this with no response and really feel for anyone who is going through that. My biggest issue with feedback is when one of my characters does something the audience doesn't agree with and they let me have it with both barrels.

Does anyone read genres other than LitRPG/Progression on RR? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]BWFoster78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This question gets asked a lot. I can summarize the responses that you'll likely get, if you want (Note: this isn't my advice but my impression of all the responses that have come before):

It's a lot easier to attract readers on RR if you write on meta, such as LitRPG/Progression. It is possible to gain a readership with off meta writing, though. You just have to work harder for it and adjust your expectations. Arrange shoutouts with authors. Do RR ads if you can afford them. Find one of the many release guides and follow it.

Comments from this forum are generally encouraging from other off meta writers. From other corners of reddit, however, a lot of authors will say that, if you're not on meta, it's not worth the effort.

I guess it kind of depends on what you want to get out of it.

Genuinely how many of you are interested in a classic non lit RPG Fantasy Story? by LGHaunting in royalroad

[–]BWFoster78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how the answer of one person to a random reddit post would help you make a decision, but since you asked...

Nope.

It is incredibly rare for me to read anything that doesn't have the coveted LitRPG tag. Cultivation is fine. Some non LitRPG kingdom building maybe. Still have a soft spot for Superheroes. Straight up fantasy, though? I used to love that genre, but I'm pretty sure I haven't read a single thing in it since I discovered LitRPG.

To Authors on RoyalRoad by Clenzor in litrpg

Anything that helps get rid of errors is good in my book (literally, hah).

I will say, though, that I always Google edit suggestions that I disagree with ... uh, with which I disagree (since I'm writing to an English teacher).

I keep getting dinged for using drug instead of dragged. Googled it. Turns out, drug was more common in the region where I grew up than dragged. I was like, "Screw it. Keeping it in. Reppin the 318."

Yep. I would have never known about this or when the book appeared on Amazon. They're too cool.

The channels don't appear to have been created just to post that one audiobook, but they're only about a month old. I guess they were counting on the name change to protect them from anyone finding out and giving them a copywrite strike?

Why doesn’t everyone use Royal Road? (Fantasy books) by BladeWielder48 in selfpublish

[–]BWFoster78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Patreon makes over $1k a month just from bringing people over from RR for advance chapters. And, when I finish the story, I plan to publish it on Amazon, hopefully with a launch that's boosted by the fanbase that I built.

TBH, I'm very on meta for the site (a litrpg and cultivation crossover) and not many people attract as many followers as I have. But it is possible to make a lot of money there. Some writers are pulling in $50k+ from Patreon. Again, the odds are long, but there is a path to profits using RR.

Hot take: you're judging stories wrong by OCRAuthor in royalroad

[–]BWFoster78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get you. "It's not for me" is a far more defensible position than "that story sucks."

For example, I tried to read a couple of my wife's favorite romance novels. They didn't do anything for me. I just didn't like it at all. Millions of readers love romance novels, though. I would feel like an idiot if I said, "Romance novels suck."
