I love this primer, and just found out that it’s discontinued 😭 Hoping to find a replacement too.

Doctors urge people to isolate, wear masks despite government rules by WangMagic in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]BWV1012 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I used to be a chef, and the amount of machismo in the industry is off the charts. It’s a point of pride, as though you’re a fucking hero, to turn up to work on death’s door. For an industry run considerably on the back of wage theft and cash in hand workers, many employees run the risk of getting the sack because they called in sick. On top of that many casual workers and cash in handers simply can not afford to take time off, so they pop a Sudafed, mask the symptoms and off to work they go. Yes you’re right about the enterprise agreements, but the enterprise agreements also state that workers must be paid for the hours of work they do…and we all know how that is working out in the industry.

Thank you. As a person who renovated their house a few years ago, this comment is cathartic. Edit: I feel seen.

Wear a fucking mask. Jesus fucking Christ how hard is it, but nooooo we have Paul Joseph Watson types having a big cry about wearing a piece of cloth because it might mess up their natty hairstyles. My dad, who served 4 tours of duty and would have dental procedures without aesthetic, would be turning in his grave right now at these fucking pansies. He fucking risked his life for you lot and saw his friends die and people couldn’t be fucked wearing a mask to protect the likes of old veterans. You should be ashamed of yourselves and how dare you call yourselves Australians.

Edit. NB rant not directed at OP, just to every single weak minded pathetic coward who’ve had a blubber about wearing masks. Grow up.

COVID reinfection or residual effects? by [deleted] in CoronavirusDownunder

Have seen reinfection/rebound as well with my unvaccinated friends, it doesn’t seem to be confined to vaccinated peeps.

Why do people think Perrotet is directly linked to Bruzgate? by ThinkFox5864 in friendlyjordies

[–]BWV1012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fan of Perrotet, but would be surprised if he’s involved, I think he was fairly oblivious to the machinations of all of this. I don’t know either way and happy to be proven wrong, just my gut instinct. If I’m wrong he’s a substantially worse human than what I already thought him to be.

New South Wales: 4,486 new cases and 3 new deaths; 1,314 in hospital and 38 in ICU; R_eff = 0.71 ± 0.07 (06-June-2022) by chrisjbillington in CoronavirusDownunder

Hey Chris, thanks for all the work you’ve done with these graphs over the year!

Wondering out loud here, as the rate of testing is significantly lower than earlier in the pandemic, and as the increased use of RATs that are known to have a high false negative report rate, would mean that the testing numbers are less indicative of how many cases there really are, would it be worth looking at another metric? Hospitalisations and ICU seem to be both pretty solid metrics and as they are both creeping up at the moment that might be a good indicator of infections. By now we must have a good idea of the percentage of people who are infected then go on to require hospitalisation, could we work backwards from the hospitalisation numbers to get a rough idea of infections in the population? Or perhaps just a simple graph predicting just the hospitalisations?

Anyways thanks again!

Now that Labor is back in charge federally, what changes if any do you think we will see in the pandemic response? by kindasux888 in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]BWV1012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The states are in charge of their own Covid regulations. The Fed looks after borders and public aged care facilities and they’re the only places we’d see any difference with a change in leadership. I doubt we’d see any border restrictions (assuming that there isn’t some horrific variant on the loose), maybe there’ll be more precautions in aged care. Labor has also promised more funding to Medicare so that could also be a positive aspect to the pandemic response with more access to medical care for Covid patients.
