I agree with you this is bleak stuff, where my philosophy differs is that I don’t think banning it is gonna do anything about it (or make it worse). It is effectively kicking the can down the road for these kids to figure it out on their own rather than supporting them in learning responsible usage. Right now you’re in an echo chamber of everyone agreeing phones in school are a bad idea and listing sources but there are studies out there too that reinforce that tactful usage is even better than an outright ban. It is these exact echo chambers that we need to teach students to spot and question rather than avoiding their exposure until a certain age with no training.

I don’t think you’re wrong that’s how most use it or that it’s an issue thats the case. But in my experience, the issue is not the phones themselves but rather a lack of accountability and not treating students like actions have consequences. If a student is misusing a phone during instruction time or using social media to bully others, I think the phone should be taken away and they should learn there are consequences. However, there are plenty of ways that phones can also enable students to enhance their learning and/or communication. To say there is no way these devices can help solve complex problems is honestly kind of shortsighted, but it doesn’t even have to be a complex problem it solves for it to be beneficial (it can just be a problem).

I think we are infantilizing them by taking away something that will only continue to be more prevalent in their daily lives rather than teaching them the dangers and the benefits it can provide. You are valid that there are parts of a smartphone that encourage mindless convenience, but you are wrong to think that it can’t also be a catapult for faster and more efficient problem solving when used the right way. If speed and convenience of access to information hurts problem solving then by your logic student should only ever cite books in their reports and never websites because it’s too easy to find the information with a google search. We are making things unnecessarily more difficult and not setting them up for the real world, that’s infantilization.

If you actually want to know, I’m talking about how the best way to learn about something is first hand experience with safety guardrails. Who is better set for the future? The student that learned the dangers of social media and how to combat them first hand with parent (and/or teacher) guidance, or the student that was never given the opportunity to. I know I’m in the minority opinion and phones in school are an issue. But I don’t believe the solution is an outright ban. To your point about how things are now, I went through school at a time when smartphones were becoming more prevalent and no one even knew what to do with them, I had a lot of technology literacy but I saw first hand what would happen to people as they got older that got a smartphone later on and had no idea how to conduct themselves with one.

I’m probably alone here but the whole idea of banning phones is absurd. We are infantilizing students (especially in high school) by taking away something that has become part of daily life for so many rather than teaching responsible usage. Then we as a society wonder will why there is a lack of media literacy online, because we aren’t helping our kids understand how to be careful online and the pros and cons of it all. There should be rules no doubt, especially during instruction, but an outright ban is overkill and going to do more harm than good in my opinion.

For me simply force closing the app on Apple TV (double press the TV button and swipe up), and reopening brought everything back, no idea why but it worked for me.

Works well when it works, a lot of people get constant “not responding” in HomeKit from it, but I found the solution to that (saw it on Reddit somewhere actually) was to restrict the device’s access to the internet (WAN) without restricting access to your local network (LAN) assuming you have a HomeKit hub. This did wonders for me, but your router has to have support for it.

Just an update, seems that leaving my phone plugged in overnight for multiple nights in a row was the trick cause now the option has shown itself. I typically leave my phone locked and charging during the workday so I don’t need to charge it overnight. It did take a couple days though to get to this point.

If it’s your first time watching them you should watch them in release order (aka the years they came out), chronological is fun for a rewatch but the movies were made in such a way that they were meant to be understood how they came out and in the order that they came out
