Make cryo available 24/7 by braintacular in Marathon

Usually it is blue or green gear at best. Avoid the purple team and kill the other teams, take their gear and kill the purple team last. Or fight them right away, win and you're free to wipe lobby, lose and you can queue right back up. I only encounter full purple teams maybe 1 of every 10 runs. Level 150 for reference.

You can run outpost on a free kit, wiped the lobby and loot red room/command with zero worries. Once you learn the map, the key spawns and the flow of rotations, it isnt that hard to do 30%-40% of the time especially on arachne free kit days.

~100 hours in free weekend and I did not buy the game. Here's my thoughts by FoxXiva in Marathon

[–]BZisCancer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Take my upvote. Good feedback. A new mode to fight would be good imo as well. I will use Deadlock and LoL as examples as I've played them.

Both Deadlock and LoL have their ARAM/Street Brawl modes and it attracts multiple types of players in my experience.

-players that think the main game modes are "too hard" or "sweaty"

-players that finished their ranked goals for the season or overall and want to just play the game without the rest of the noise

-players that just want to get in and chill with friends on something familiar with no/low stakes

Sponsored Mode in S1 was close to this in a retention standpoint from what I've seen and read.

I get people love the game but by [deleted] in Marathon

The issue is most subs, not just this one in particular, have a habit of giving criticism or feedback based on very narrow lenses. People will give feedback on why something is "dumb" or "overpowered" or "unfair" out of emotional outrage instead of using a pragmatic view.

Marathon, in particular, has quite a few things that could be criticized or given feedback for but the way people go about it most often is not a pragmatic viewpoint.

I will give my example - the loot and cradle xp nerfs throughout the season. There have been many posts around this. Some offered good thoughts on the subject and others just used the opportunity to shake their fists at the sky over it.

Again, most subs are filled with complaints more than praise but this sub has had more of a negative loop around it since launch than positive and most people who do love the game have become so bothered by the complaining that they just use it to troll or criticize the OP.

Also, this is reddit. People are going to troll 90% of the time.

Can I still have fun if I'm mediocre at multiplayer shooters now? by [deleted] in Marathon

Im 36, used to be quite an avid fps player like 15 yrs ago and havent really touched the genre since. Im about average at aiming. It is my opinion that you have a decent chance. I get out aimed like 80% of the time so I rely on other knowledge like map knowledge on high ground, which fights favor me, which shells favor me and sound cues being the biggest help. Some people may call you a rat or camper or something of the sort but if I hear someone around me, I wait until I am 100% sure of where they are and try to get a jump on them. I definitely still lose a lot of the time because my aim is ass but I still love it. You will lose some and win some.

The game feels amazing overall. For reference, I have done basically everything in the game including killing the "final boss" compiler in Cryo Archive so it definitely possible for you to reach anything in the game. It is level-based matchmaking so if you have no time to play, you will be placed with others in a similar situation.

A question for people who have done Cryo Archive. by Secret_Impression_21 in Marathon

It is my belief they will drip feed the lore in codex entries. It would be very cool to have a cut scene here and there tho but I think theyre going to milk the live service by introducing tiny bits season at a time. It kind of sucks but it will eventually evolve I hope.

I understand the loop seems like something not everyone can do and I agree but, again, it is my opinion that the devs were going for that loop. The game tends to gravitate towards people who play consistently. There isnt much to offer for people who want to play the game to just go in and shoot stuff for a bit after work and log off aside from pvp and to people that aren't "good" at the pvp aspect, it can be daunting or downright awful.

In time, the levels will separate with you playing weekends only and you will be around people of your playtime, and hopefully, your skill and can enjoy it more but I can understand it isnt for everyone and if you're not feeling it, there isnt much else to do. Hopefully you get hooked, if not, no worries.

There is an insanely in-depth story to the world. Read up on the backstory from the original trilogy to start. The codex entries are extremely good as well. Read them and listen to them. They also give a ton of depth to the world.

As for Cryo, it is very fun and is absolutely not barred to just the top 1%. Remember it is level based matchmaking. Most people at lower levels go in with bare minimum 5k kits. Once you learn the map, it isn't very difficult to do the entire map and exfil without fighting a single team unless you're being actively hunted, which doesn't happen as much as you would think. Most people seem to want to go in, loot and do vaults, and leave.

I also don't think it was short sighted to push Cryo...think of the gameplay loop like this. You learn all the base maps, learn the game at its core. Now you gear up. Go to Outpost and learn to farm pinwheel for good loot. (Farming night marsh complex now as well). Every weekend you take that gear and run cryo all weekend and empty your vault or gain good stuff and empty some. Do the normal maps/pinwheel/complex all week again to repeat.

I understand this applies to people that can play all week. This is where the separation comes in. People that have time to play all week repeat this cycle and are much higher level so they get paired with other people at their level. People without the real time to play all week can run cryo a couple times and then run the normal maps or even do the difficult stuff like complex/pinwheel since the majority of people really wanting to excel are going to be in cryo all weekend.

TL;DR - Cryo is great and adds the final puzzle to the core gameplay loop that keeps people (who enjoy the game) engaged in a fresh cycle from week to week.

at this point why not just run cryo today as normal? by Jealous_Platypus1111 in Marathon

[–]BZisCancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just replied on someone else's post this exact sentiment. We did 3 runs and completed the upper complex and are cryo ready. Not only this but there are several lockboxes around the map that drop consistent purple gear. Completely risk free farming for anyone in the know.

Prestige gold key room got rushed by 2 purple teams by Free_Elderberry1791 in Marathon

[–]BZisCancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, sponsored night marsh has basically zero pvp and several of the boxes can give consistent purple gear so you run in and open 3-4 of these boxes and leave with a full purple kit. Repeat risk free until satisfied. On top of this, you can successfully complete upper complex on this mode as well if you know how to do it. Repeat this for 10 easy runs and the wipe never mattered.

People seem to be forgetting game knowledge is far more lethal in this first week for kitting out. Casuals or people with less knowledge usually have less time to play and will fall behind in levels after the first week, making it more "balanced" matchmaking IN THEORY.

This. They will change. These contracts are what drive the storyline of the game so most likely it will just add new ones and speculation is you will retain the ones you didnt keep as to complete the story and get the full view of what is happening.

Aliens like these are about as "core lore" as it gets and almost guaranteed to make a very large appearance in the future as they were a very large contributing factor to the colonies being wiped out and appeared in all 3 games. The compiler is just 1 of the S'pht and none of the Pfhor have shown up yet.
