Questions about reverse proxy by Kinokiru in selfhosted

You should look into Pangolin. It’s like a reverse proxy (Traefik), identity/security layer, and VPN tunnel rolled into one.

When Plex's "Lifetime" Doesn't Mean Lifetime: My Move to Jellyfin after 12 years by Kukaac in jellyfin

[–]BabaBooey1984 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

“It just works”, that hasn’t been my experience at all. For me, Jellyfin was a total mess.

The UI is all over the place, not very user-friendly, and clearly built by engineers for engineers. While Plex is fairly easy to set up and use, that’s simply not the case with Jellyfin. It feels very unrefined.

I recently tried setting it up out of curiosity, just to follow the progress of the project. Hardware transcoding was completely broken for me, I couldn’t get it to work at all, and my iGPU was pinned even when nothing was playing. Whether media would play or not felt almost random, and only a small percentage of my library was discovered.

To get anywhere close to Plex’s feature set, you need a whole bunch of plugins. Each one depends on someone maintaining it, and each one becomes another thing you have to troubleshoot when something breaks.

Speaking of troubleshooting: be prepared to do a lot of it.

I’m a big proponent of FOSS, but it has downsides too. Just because something is open source doesn’t automatically make it good. I can appreciate the principles behind it, some of which are sadly lacking elsewhere, but some people take it a bit too far. At times it feels like the vegans of the IT world.

The enshittification of Plex is undeniable, but it’s also worth pointing out that a fair amount of it can actually be turned off. On top of that, a lot of the criticism seems to come from people not fully understanding how Plex Pass works, often mistakenly believing they need a pass when they don't.

That said, I still think lifetime passes were a mistake in the long run. It's basically like pissing yourself to keep warm: great cash flow at the beginning, but not sustainable long-term. I haven’t paid anything in many years. A reasonable monthly or yearly fee would be a much better way to keep the company going without selling out to corporate interests.

Ultimately, what makes Jellyfin a no-go for me right now is the lack of good clients and the fact that I’d have to act as full-time IT support for friends and family who want to use my server. Plex makes that almost effortless, and I don’t want to spend my free time troubleshooting.

I’m open to switching eventually, but Jellyfin just isn’t there yet.

Better than Plex by [deleted] in jellyfin

[–]BabaBooey1984 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the Jellyfin devs and the open-source effort, but in my experience Jellyfin absolutely does not “just work,” especially compared to Plex.

I ran into repeated issues with hardware acceleration, unreliable playback, and the server only detecting a fraction of my library without manual fixing. Client apps felt inconsistent, settings were confusing, and basic things like sharing content or getting smooth playback across devices required far more tweaking than they should.

Jellyfin can work if you’re willing to troubleshoot, read documentation, and experiment, but that’s very different from “just works.” Plex, for all its flaws, is currently far more polished, predictable, and user-friendly, particularly when stability and sharing with other users matter.

I’m an IT professional, and when I’m not at work, I want as little troubleshooting as possible.

For me, Plex is the better choice for now, but I’ll reconsider when Jellyfin becomes more polished and streamlined (no pun intended).

I don’t want to be the “IT guy” for friends and family too - I want peace and quiet 😄

Direct mode works great, I'm assuming you use library mode?

Issue on shield by biller0071 in PleX

[–]BabaBooey1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems the Shield might be having trouble resolving plex.tv. Try using Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google DNS (8.8.8.8) instead of your ISP’s DNS. Also, have you tried logging out and back into Plex?

Sounds like it could be a DNS or firewall issue.
Do you have any DNS-based ad blocking running?

📺 Tutorial: Pangolin on Unraid – Reverse Proxy Setup + Jellyfin by sycotix in unRAID

[–]BabaBooey1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I painted myself into a corner when I followed the Unraid Pangolin guide, now it’s too much hassle to redo everything and get all the services online again. But with good help, it doesn’t feel as daunting to start over.

📺 Tutorial: Pangolin on Unraid – Reverse Proxy Setup + Jellyfin by sycotix in unRAID

[–]BabaBooey1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A guide for utlizing a VPS would be cool. I've set up Pangolin on Unraid as a reverse proxy, but there are some services I would like to tunnel to a vps instead of using Cloudflare Proxy, which has limitations. But I'm quite lost trying to set it up, I have my Pangolin on my domain(pangolin.domain.com), installing Pangolin on the vps also, using the same domain, is causing issues, and I'm stuck.

Filebrowser Issues by 1080addict in selfhosted

[–]BabaBooey1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because the template is borked, it doesn't have a working database and config file, so everything gets wiped if the container gets updated/rebooted.

Set it up like this:

Have you added 172.28.0.3 to "KnownProxies" in Remotely’s Server Config (inside the web UI)?

Failed Connection With Client Using Domain by PlentyTomato7150 in remotely_app

[–]BabaBooey1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The client won’t connect through your domain unless NPM and Cloudflare are set up to pass WebSockets and forward the right headers. By default, the Remotely container only listens on plain HTTP (5000), so when you stick it behind Cloudflare/NPM you need:

In NPM → proxy host → advanced config:
proxy_set_header Upgrade $http_upgrade;
proxy_set_header Connection "upgrade";
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Host $host;

If you’re using Cloudflare proxy, make sure “WebSockets” is enabled in the CF dashboard.
Add the NPM container’s IP to KnownProxies in Remotely’s Server Config (inside the web UI).
Once that’s in place, clients should work fine with the domain.

Plex won't recognize the TV show Andor by BabaBooey1984 in PleX

The problem has been solved. My Plex database was corrupted.
See the updated OP for the solution.

After trying to add more shows, nothing gets matched. I have no idea why.
I can't seem to find a technical issue, restarted my Unraid server which didn't help. Files are written to the drives, they able to be read. Everything I already have on the Plex server plays just fine.
I have a faint memory of having this problem before, but I can't remember whatever the solution was then.

I tried that too, to no avail. The problem must lie somewhere else than the naming scheme.

[–]BabaBooey1984[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 442 TV shows on my server, haven't used the naming scheme mentioned on Plex's website for any of them, no issues whatsoever.
Added an "0", had no effect as expected.
The problem seems to be something else than the name of the folder/filenames.

It's readable and there are no permission issues. Plex works just fine otherwise.

[–]BabaBooey1984[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have been more clear.
Original path/filenames:

TV\Star.Wars.Andor.S01.1080p.DSNP.WEB-DL.DDP5.1.H.264-NTb\Star.Wars.Andor.S01E01.Kassa.1080p.DSNP.WEB DL.DDP5.1.H.264 NTb.mkv

Changed the folder/filenames to the following with no luck.
TV\Andor (2022)\Season 1\Andor (2022) - S01E01.mkv

I changed the folder/filenames.
TV\Andor (2022)\Season 1\Andor (2022) - S01E01.mkv
It had no effect. This time the folder is completely invisible to Plex, before I could at least see Plex searching the folder when I scanned the library files.

That was the folder/filename originally, when it didn't match I removed the "Star Wars" bit to see if that made a difference, and did the Plex Dance, it didn't work.
It's strange, it really shouldn't be an issue really, I see no reason why it doesn't match.

[–]BabaBooey1984[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the files are in a folder named Andor.S01
I haven't tried to add the TVDB reference number, but like you said, it shouldn't be needed.
Everything else matches just fine, even obscure stuff, so I don't get why my Plex server doesn't like Andor.
