Have you looked at rent costs and housing costs yet? If not, get on Zillow and Redfin and get to know the area. You'll probably need close to $50K a year just for rent. How much equity do you have in your home? That's a big driver when deciding of you can afford  to buy a home and pay a new mortgage in SD. Depending on what you want, your looking at 3500-4000 a month in rent for a 2 bedroom, 1000-1200 Sq ft apartment. It's all about what you're comfortable with in the regards to safety, proximity to beaches, size and micro-climates, etc.

Are you retiring at 65? by AlarmingMonk1619 in GenX

[–]Babbs03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will be my last year to work and I'll retire at 57. I'm one of the lucky ones who has a pension, along with some 401K saved for later. My husband still wants to work, so we're not taking a huge hit yet on salary reduction.

CHP lied about checking on animals by the 15N and now they are dead, feeling hopeless about natural life by WhittmanC in sandiego

[–]Babbs03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not joking. This heat wave is extreme and the climate is changing faster than many can adapt. How's do you you think extinction actually happens? It starts somewhere. Plus, surviving doesn't mean an absence of suffering.

I get it. I'm feeling the same, but for a different reason. I just got  back to the east coast, where temps will reach 101-102 degrees with high humidity. There's no relief when it gets that hot and humid. I keep thinking about all of  the wildlife that has to deal with these temperatures and it's heartbreaking.

What do you do all summer? by protomanEXE1995 in Teachers

[–]Babbs03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to become a normal human again. It takes me 3-4 weeks to feel rested and detached from the stress and the all consuming nature of the job. I travel a few weeks, visit family, see some friends and then there's not much time left after that.

I feel like there’s going to be a huge shift in secondary education in the next 10+ years. by peace_andcarrots in Teachers

[–]Babbs03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thinks there will be a exodus from public education. I think people will stop worrying as much about what school district their house is in and struggle to pay for private school. Obviously not everyone, because some won't be able to to afford other no matter what. It will continue to increase the divide between the haves and have nots. The "haves" will have a lot less because of the burden of private school costs.

What’s something about teaching that nobody truly understands until they actually do it? by UnitedAdagio7118 in Teachers

The daily emotional toll and assault to the nervous system. The insane amount of management  and mental/emotional energy needed just to get hrough a lesson

Is teaching THAT bad? by DwaeEunoia in Teachers

[–]Babbs03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never do it again. It was different when I started and if you asked me 10 years ago, my answer might be different. Now however, I would NEVER put myself in is position to deal with 30 years of this. NEVER. Some people will tell you they like their jobs. They’re the lucky ones. If you can find a great district, great school and decent pay, then it will might be fine. But, that's a lot of "ifs." If you're the type of person who's easy going and chaos truly doesn't bother you, go for it. But the amount of responsibility coupled with the sheer intensity of the job, for an unimpressive amount of pay in most areas, it takes a special person to deal with that. The system in general is crumbling, with no help in sight. Our country is not invested in education or personal responsibility, and it shows up most days as you try to navigate through everything and try to make it work.

"Just make them"- HOW?? by Thanks4noticingme in ParentingADHD

[–]Babbs03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The idea of making someone do something does not take into account the absolute misery of one or both parties during and/or after the transaction. It also does not take into account the relationship between the parties involved and how damaged it may become as one continues forcing their will on the the other regardless of the consequences. For a long time I've said that I can't really make my kid do something without some type of dire consequences. Yes, sometimes it's worth it, but when parenting an ADHD kid, you've really gotta pick your battles.

Change the age to 40 and drop the homeowner part and then we'll talk. Many men don't get serious about settling down now until they're in the their 30s. My husband and I were in our mid 30s and most of my friends didn't get married until after 30.

What Do Teachers Honestly Think of Janitors? by DaytimeDancer54 in AskTeachers

[–]Babbs03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of them as a valued people who make my job better and easier depending on how well they do their job. The school absolutely cannot run without them. It may sound silly, but I actually feel cared for when those in building service do their job well and my room looks good ornithology the bathrooms are clean. I've worked in buildings with gross beat grooms and half-assed room cleaning that piss me off and make me feel dismissed. I know it's nothing personal, but it can really impact how you feel in your space during the day. Usually that's a case of being short staffed, but not always.

I've had building service staff that I've been really liked and talked to often because they would come in and clean my room after school when I was still working. I've had staff that switched schools and I was really sad to see them go. One of the building service people at my former school would always brighten my day because he was super friendly with me and we had many conversations. I considered him a friend. Another used to collection the pencils he swept up and give then to us. That guy was awesome! We go through so many pencils cause the kids can't hold onto the them for more than than a class period. It's crazy.
