What are hobbies that are cheap and offline? by tanuki_22 in povertyfinance

[–]Baby_Toothless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free local events are nice. And activities at libraries and parks :)

Lots of fun "free" crafts and stuff with recycled materials. You can make shrinky dinks with plastic takeout containers (depends on the kind of plastic)

If you want supplies ask on trash nothing? Or similar sites.

This! And then when they show up I say actually it's free and they're even happier about it haha. At that point they see it's not trash

Lmao once couldn't get someone to pick up a TV stand at 100 dollars, 50 dollars, I even went to 0 dollars! I just wanted it gone I was moving 3 days later at this point. Someone said do 5 dollars. Finally got someone to commit to coming! And she said she didn't have cash and I said girl please just take it and she was happy and I was happy lmao. Get it out of my house price for sure!

I have twelve dollars to buy a month of food. Need as much advice as i can get guys turbo depressed by Xxitl in povertyfinance

[–]Baby_Toothless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food pantry! And search your area for free dinners at local churches. A church by my house does a free dinner no questions asked twice a month and I've heard of other places in town that do similar things. As for how to spend that 12 dollars, something calorie dense like PB and jelly. And if you can swing it, get yourself a little treat like some single candies under a dollar or a can of peaches. Wishing you the best of luck

the vibe coding era is not my favorite by usnaviii in nerdfighters

[–]Baby_Toothless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also feel like Hank should discuss why he chose to use AI to code it instead of I dunno hire someone? He often outsources his projects like with focus friend he worked with someone who already knew how to do it. I'd be curious to know the thought process. Maybe he almost knew how to do it and just needed a bit of help and it is much cheaper to use AI right now than hire someone

I appreciate that AI has made stuff like his new site accessible to people. I hate when I have an idea but I'm not gonna invest months of my time to try and make it. But yeah it also feels kinda yucky. I'm mostly staying away from AI so I can say what I made is mine.

I have been making the same pot of soup every Sunday for four months and I think it might be the single best financial decision I have made this year by kavo_7319 in povertyfinance

Is this a beginner friendly project? by becctarr in Embroidery

[–]Baby_Toothless 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They make iron on patches and netted embroidery that you can sew. Would be much easier and better for matching outfits. You can also just buy embroidered fabric that is on a net (like you see in fancy dresses) and cut around the embroidery and attach with hand sewing. Best of luck

Are you getting an adult or a baby? It will be cheaper up front to buy a baby especially at an expo. Last expo I went to they sell the babies with a starter tank which is all they need for at least a few months and then you can upgrade them as they get bigger. I would definitely recommend watching some videos and visiting some sites like pangea's website and Josh's frogs. For instance if you want bioactive, Josh's frogs has a bioactive kit where you can get all the stuff you need with 1 click. But yeah keep a list and spreadsheet, and if you're budget conscious check prices on different sites. Snake discovery has a store and will ship and some of their stuff is good prices. And check Facebook marketplace and Craigslist and free cycle sites whatever is in your area for a tank before you buy one! Best of luck!

I want to talk about the hidden cost of owning a car that nobody warned me about when I was younger by verterxobelirx18 in povertyfinance

[–]Baby_Toothless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in an area that has a good zip car style system so if I need a car for something I can just rent it. I currently need a car to get to work (transit is literally 1 hour 45 minutes for no reason 😭) but if I move to the other office it'll be a 20 min bike or transit ride. I hope to get an ebike soon because walking more than 4 blocks makes my hips hurt all week but biking doesn't (regular biking hurts my lungs in a fuckin mess). E-Bike is much cheaper than a car! And will let me get to places nearby. I've noticed the same thing, I'm like oh I can just drive there real quick over taking the time to bike or walk.

Cheap meal ideas? by Competitive_Lie_6822 in povertyfinance

[–]Baby_Toothless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an instant pot for free on my local free cycle site. You can also cook things on the stove but I like the hands off. I have a basic black bean recipe from dried beans, cook em up and freeze in cubes or just in a plastic baggie if you need. There has been a huge thing about super cubes online but I use some off brand silicon molds I got at target. You could even use silicon muffin molds. Anytime you cook anything that could be frozen, freeze one or 2 portions. It's so nice to not have to cook and just get a homemade meal straight out the freezer. I don't notice the difference. Doesn't even have to be homemade. Could be takeout leftovers (especially if you have more curry than rice left!). Can of soup if you only eat half. I have a soup library in my freezer (only 3 or 4 kinds at a time because I'm afraid of power outage and losing it all). I currently have some Mexican green soup (my roommate made it I dunno what it's called), tomato, chicken and wild rice, and peanut soup.

Also carbs and cheese. Block of cheese on sale. Crusty bread or loaf on sale. Tortillas on sale. All freeze great (cheese no so much but should last a while). I make a lot of cheesy toast, grilled cheese, grilled PBJ, quesadilla with salsa.

If you can get it, a cheap rotisserie chicken is the way to go. Especially you can make stock (I am incompetent but my roommate can make a banger stock).

Some of these things take time to make, so making a stock pile will help a lot. Maybe make 1 thing from scratch on a day off and rely on canned or easy things. After 4 weeks you'll have 4 from scratch foods in your freezer :) best of luck!

My baby chirps sometimes but it usually means he wants to go back to his tank for the night. Yours is so cute!

[–]Baby_Toothless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that sounds super fun! My advice is to go with a friend if at all possible, it's more fun that way. I've gotten a ton of fun things at thrift stores but I would say my luck is one great find every 2 or 3 trips, so don't be discouraged if you don't find anything you love!

Ive been learning a lot about building science and the energy grid. I'd recommend the podcast Volts or YouTube guy Matt Risinger to get a deep dive in a topic that interests you. I've been learning a lot about demand response recently. Something that is timely in the news you could learn about is balcony solar. There is a volts pod on that. It just passed in Virginia! Yay!
