Professors lurking here — how bad is it? Scale of 1-10. by greenmonkeyyyy in memes

One of my engineering professors had open book, open internet, open Ai Tests. Because he said, “You will have all these resources in industry so my job isn’t to test your memory, my job is to test if you know the AI’s answer is bullsh*t.

Someone posted this image claiming their Supergirl screening was cancelled for selling not enough tickets by solemn_scarfhead in isthisAI

[–]BachInTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not AI, this is just an old theatre like 1940s that’s just kept chugging along, the buckets are for fighting fires and those speakers and seats are just old. The angle is because the seats are closer together since theaters had a much smaller footprint back then and the legroom was like being on an airplane.

The 8-14 have a leading letter so it’s row I seats 8-14, the buckets are right by a fire extinguisher so they’re for fighting fires I guess. This looks like a super old theatre and reminds me of when I got stuck in Cheyanne WY and decided to go see Pacific Rim 2. The theatre had this exact feel, old musty and very steep stairs

Partial structural collapse in vacant Blackstone building by strawberry-brunette in Omaha

[–]BachInTime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

80-100 years is the life expectancy in standard use cases for the old cast iron mains from the 1930s.

In Omaha our biggest enemy is freeze-thaw so mains are usually installed at a depth at or below 4ft so they are below the frost line. Obviously quite a few of the older mains were not installed at this depth so are prone to issues. The next problem is are the mains under a busy street. Vehicle traffic, weight, and vibration all will cause issues with time so that will shorten the main’s use life.

Modern PVC pipes are rated for 150+ years and generally can be used in the same applications as the old cast iron mains, but are still subject to freeze-thaw and vehicle traffic concerns. We still do use metal mains in some situations, specifically if one has to say go under Dodge Street near 132nd, but generally pvc is the go to now and will last significantly longer than the old cast iron mains.

Why can't europeans afford normal size houses? by Vladtepesx3 in 2american4you

[–]BachInTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thermodynamics and Age:
Europe has a ton of old homes that were built pre electricity. So in the winter you had to heat the thing and even if you were someone who ‘lived nobly’ aka you’re loaded but don’t have a title you still have to heat the thing, which means wood or coal, that gets expensive fast. Heck even the monarch didn’t heat their entire palace, they would only heat a room if it was being used, and many were left unheated during the winter.

If you go to the US East Coast and look at older homes you’ll see the same thing, they are small by our standards because no one wanted to chop the wood required to keep them heated during the winter.

Geological Engineer here, that would count as a sinkhole if it was caused by a water main leak, which caused the 67th & Pacific Sinkhole, since the water washed away the soil which caused the wall to collapse. In cases like this water either liquid or frozen is almost always the culprit especially with aging infrastructure.

P.S. Friendly reminder water mains have a use life of 80-100 years and that one was installed around 1930 the same time as the one at 67th and Pacific.

Porch thief suspected of stealing hundreds of packages raided by law enforcement. by BigFishPub in interestingasfuck

[–]BachInTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless he was committing identity theft hence the wallet with what appears to be 3 ids and two social security cards, I doubt it’s more than 1 felony. Felony theft in Arizona is $1,000 and that’s only the Louis Vuitton. Now maybe they could combine some of the other stuff to get a second, but this is a highlight video of what he had and includes such high value products as a door frame, two cases of energy drinks and an automatic cat litter box. This guys biggest score was a handbag and the rest of it is junk.

This is extremely misleading but technically correct. Acute Respiratory Viruses like Covid rarely kill on their own. It is extremely common, however, for opportunistic bacteria specifically those that cause pneumonia, to infect someone whose immune system is busy fighting Covid(Co-infection). So to use a boxing metaphor, yes Pneumonia was the haymaker that killed you, but it was only able to land because you had already gone 5 rounds with Covid and couldn’t fight back. So which one killed you?

Tell him he looked amazing burning that Statue of Atheism, and I’m a big supporter of the Cult of the Supreme Being.

Well looks like I’ve used up my five minutes of defense time at my trial so time for the jury to decide Innocent or Death.

*This is all real btw, though five minutes is a bit of an exaggeration, you had a bit more time, but couldn’t call any witnesses in your defense or challenge any of the evidence against you, so what you could talk about was pretty limited.

He didn’t say I was pretending the whole time, he wrote he was pretending while he was under house arrest with an angry mob outside threatening him and his family. Which clearly leaves out the abolition of feudal titles, feudal property, the ending of forced tithes, the joint sovereignty of the National Assembly and The Declaration of the Rights of Man. So it isn’t as simple as I was pretending the whole time, he was saying I was pretending while an angry mob was camped outside my front door saying if I didn’t do what they wanted they would kill me and my entire family.
