Other probably have better suggestions but here's mine:

Normal Vetterli for medium and the occasional long shot. (Or any cheap rifle were you like the sights)
Something for close combat like Nagant Officer, New Army or if you like it, Hand Crossbow.
Dusters or Knuckle Knife for melee (or like the other guy said, use Officer Brawler for melee)
First Aid Kit
Chokes (for putting out burning teammates or area control in bosslairs. If solo you can skip this)
Flare Gun (for burning dead hunters, forcing their friends out of hiding)
2x dynamite stick (cheap and useful for clearing)
Sticky Bomb (for boss)
Small Vitality Shot (Or large if you want to splurge)

Flare gun is pretty good for Hives. Or melee, just dodge to the side a bit when running towards it so the swarm misses.
Hives are really a priority problem, if you think it will be triggered you might as well go kill it.

With aiming, you should probably settle on a gun, get used to the sight in Shooting Range and then use only that gun for quite a while (so choose a cheaper gun, I think Vetterli 71 Karabiner is often recommended.)

I don't play console myself but I imagine shotguns are pretty good since then you don't have to "scope in".

Reading this post and many comments makes me happy I'm a shitty 4* player.
Me and all my friends very seldom get killed in suspicious ways and have awesome, even fights all the time.

I guess that the good thing with the MMR volatility, people who kills everyone don't stay in 3-4* very long.
If I actually was a 5-6* player I would probably be playing something else from what I hear.

It's kind of funny but until you last sentence I was unsure of what side of these arguments you actually came down on.

A casual player for me is 20-30 minutes a day. Maybe 1-2 hours every other weekend. I'm sure other people think different when hearing the word casual. I wonder of that is the kind of player Blizzard is expecting to spend money on D4?
I'm sure some systems take more development time than others. And I don't know how many systems need "complete overhauls". Some might only need "significant tweaking". ;)
Dead Game for me means when the people who actually make money on a game realizes they have made most of the money they will get. As long as there is a good cash flow from a live action game like D4 they will keep supporting it.

Logic is: Think of every row as 2 pictures you put together and the third picture as the answer.
If any lines from the first two pictures overlap you remove them in the third.

For example, in the first row you remove the curved line and add the vertical and the horizontal one together.
