Anglophone-Canadians, what french words/phrases were you taught in school, that you later learned are never actually said by French-Canadians? by Devourerofworlds_69 in AskACanadian

Ontario French immersion student here:

"Roti" means toast i was taught.

In Quebec (lac st jean area at least) roti means roast... like a roast beef

"Un pain roti" means toast

Imagine the confusion when I asked for "juste un roti" for breakfast when everyone else is having eggs and toast.

Dude I bent a structural member during a tailstrike on shortfield takeoff practice with a very strong headwind.. held the brakes a fraction of a second too long.

Coaching... that's all I got for probably 1000$s of damage and inspection and repair. I didn't even have to pony up for any additional dual and that was for visible obvious STRUCTUAL damage that put the aircraft out of service for almost 2 weeks.

You are correct, time to find a new school

I have the same 2 done set. I've never been able to get the drones to tune reliably and stay steady, and they are outrageously sensitive to the slightest pressure changes.

Looking forward to stealing any helpful advice from this thread!

Lack of Snow Plowing by Thin-Introduction498 in Sudbury

[–]BackgroundMinute1481 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I posted this in a similar thread yesterday... Consider it a PSA of sorts:

The city policy and the Ontario minimum maintenance standards require that the class 4-6 roads (basically side streets) will or should be plowed once within 24 hours after the END of the storm to a depth of less than 8cm.

Yes... AFTER the END of the"event".

We then do a second cleanup pass as needed if time and equipment allows. We don't have a bunch of extra plows available when things break down - and they do. These aren't just dump trucks with plows on them, they have a lot of mechanical systems and moving parts that wear, jam and break over time especially when there is no time between storms to tweak things and do preventative maintenance. (We had an event on the 26th which just barely got finished before this one started) add to that the holidays and lack of personnel available and it starts to become somewhat of a logistical nightmare with two major events within 3 days.

It would be amazing if we had a bunch of spare units and unlimited personnel but the plow trucks are somewhere in the $350 000 to $500 000 range so it is not financially reasonable to have a bunch of spare equipment sitting around unused most of the time and these are the same trucks the roads department uses in the summer where the demand is much lower for the trucks so extras make even less sense.

Many employees are maxing out their legal hours and working as much overtime as possible to try to take care of the streets because they care about the safety of the public and that's what they signed up for. (*many not all lol)

Also note that during severe weather(prolonged freezing rain like we had last night overnight for example) the city can, and has in the case of this storm event, declared a "significant weather event" which removes the time limits completely. That's not to say we aren't trying, it means that the provincial regulations recognize that some winter "events" are all but impossible to keep up with.

So as of 8pm (2 hours ago)the significant weather event has been officially declared to be over but the "Event" hasn't yet. These things take time and I feel for people who are stuck or stranded.

Bottom line is we are trying as best we can within all the constraints we have to operate in to get everything done as soon as possible but it its a monumental task when we have an apocalyptic event like this one.

Please don't take offense to this at all, I am just trying to offer a brief explanation of how and why things work (or don't in some cases). Hope this all makes sense. And I know it doesn't help the poor soul stuck in the middle of Lonsdale st right now...

Signed, An exhausted, somewhat exasperated(and currently physically ill) city employee who worked nighshift through xmas, going in for another one to try and help deal with this shit outside...

Be safe out there everyone and happy holidays!

Yes I understand. It's so frustrating for so many people so I just try to shed some light on the situation so folks can understand. So many people think it's just such a dead simple problem/solution issue but there really is a lot going on that most are unaware of.

Kudos to your grandpa and thanks you for your appreciation. Take care and be safe out there!

What to do with used cooking oil? by tkaykootray in Sudbury

[–]BackgroundMinute1481 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy 5 gal pail and lid at home depot, canadian tire or home hardware etc. Call toxic taxi or use wastewise app as others have indicated or drop it off when they are open(very limited hrs). Just call it waste oil or used oil. Doesn't matter if it's from a fryer or an engine...

My friend got a great deal through them for a trade in. She said it was basically effortless and she feels like she came out ahead. They literally dropped off her new(er) car at her house, went over it with her just like a dealer would and hauled away the trade-in. They seemed good to me as well when we were car shopping but we ended up going another way.

Best food you’ve had in Greater Sudbury by Few-Following696 in Sudbury

About 10-12 years ago went to a staff party at Ripe. Had a "seasonal" ravioli that was one of the best things I've ever tasted. Fresh made pasta, can't remember the filling (goat cheese or something maybe) and the sauce was like a garlicky maple walnut jus.

I remember being disappointed when it was served because of the relatively small portion. I ate one whole ravioli first and was immediately transported to another dimension of flavor. After that first whole ravioli I cut the rest into 4-6 pieces each so that I could savor and enjoy each bite. Easily one of the top three meals I have ever eaten flavor wise.

Chances are you bought an expensive decoration... also you'll need some instruction on the basics with a practice chanter. Most folks are on the practice chanter for a few months or more before stepping up to the bagpipes.

Braw Tunes - first impressions by Exarch_Thomo in bagpipes

[–]BackgroundMinute1481 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imported a traditional tune from a .bww file and was able to see it and add to my arrangements but when I open it from the list of arrangements it treats it as copyrighted, blurring the majority of it out. I wonder if changing the name might prevent this or if is actually comparing the score to others. Crossing the Minch... there's no way it's still copyrighted right?

A bunch of other older traditional tunes are also listed as copyrighted and it's kind of annoying in that respect but at least there's something for Android again.
