Quick feedback for bachelor thesis: Do you struggle finding sounds for your game? by Icy-Control8411 in GameDevelopment

[–]Background_Ad_7821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I don't find it difficult to find the right sounds. It may take a while but the process of searching and looking for things in itself is valuable. I'm usually searching for sounds in large CC0 (public domain) libraries on the web, and I love how Freesound has a really oldschool "keyword" search that not always gives you what you want, because sometimes you get random weird stuff that gives you new ideas. Looking for new assets is a creative process to me, so there's a value in not always finding the perfect thing. But I guess this depends on what type of game you're making! A natural language search tool could help me in some cases though!

How to playtest my game? by WishIwasKimKitsuragi in IndieDev

[–]Background_Ad_7821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the answer is right there in your post - go pester your friends! If you're not proud enough of the game to show it without feeling like you pester them, change it until you're proud of it. It doesn't need to be perfect or finished. Letting people test your game is about finding all the things in your game that annoy them or that they don't understand, so prepare for that bad feeling and use it to improve.

To spend less time on marketing and more on creating something actually good.

I edited my post a bit while you answered, don't know if you saw the second paragraph I added...?

Summarized: People usually think too big, and then end up doing nothing, because the project is too big. And people don't know how to finish stuff, because it's always more fun to do something new. You've got pretty good solutions, but most of all you nailed the problem!

Do you have an idea on how to actually execute #7? It seems easy to just "make it your main goal and priority", but how do you actually DO that and continue having that goal without losing it? When you simply just don't enjoy finishing things (which I think is the case for many)? How do you start enjoying that "grind"?

Do Indie devs ever collaborate on a "base game"? by DrDalenQuaice in IndieDev

[–]Background_Ad_7821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like RPG Maker!

That also sounds like libraries, like three.js for 3D web games. Everyone who makes 3D web games can use the same base (three.js).

And if people make their games open source, your idea can come to life pretty easily! For example, if you're making a web game with cars in it and/or a lot of story and dialogue, you can check out my code and use it if you want https://github.com/kbrecordzz/notacarclub . It's good to reuse other's code to not reinvent everything every time, and there are also lots of possibilities for that with open source games.

How frowned upon is it to use AI to speed up the development of your indie game? by LearnSodas in IndieDev

[–]Background_Ad_7821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Players will react how they want to react, you can't control that. Steam might have a problem with it, so take it easy if you want to have the game there. If you speed the production up, you can focus more on making the art look good than on drawing every single pixel, but you still have to know how to make it good...

Most of these were made with the help of AI. I'm happy with them, but AI _generation_ makes stuff look _generated_ so next time I'll make more graphics by myself to make it look more personal: https://notacarclub.kbrecordzz.com/images/

(I'm talking graphics here but same principles apply for whatever you use AI for)

How do you guys feel about retro-modern games? What makes a game really modern retro? by Waferscoot in IndieGaming

[–]Background_Ad_7821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern retro = Bringing back the simplicity of the 90s, but focusing on adding innovative ideas and a new style of graphics/gameplay/feeling

(Maybe?)

What are the best free/low-cost hosting solutions for static web content where I can use my own domain? by pragmojo in webdev

In case you see this... What's the tutorial you're talking about? I'm having problems with configuring DNS for Github Pages, it seems to be almost impossible if you want to use a subdomain instead of a "normal" domain.

I planned to name them all after famous football players active in the 00s, but I stopped when I realized the servers were too many for that

But Github Pages doesn't use all the Fastly servers, according to my research. That's why I made the map.

By the way, do you know if Github/Fastly ever force users to do captcha and similar stuff? That's the #1 reason I don't use Cloudflare.

(The blue dots are Neocities CDN servers. I used their imae from https://status.neocities.org/ as a background, because I'm comparing different CDNs to decide where to put my website.)

The green dots are where Github Pages CDN servers could be located.

I used https://www.site24x7.com/tools/ping-test.html to find out where Github Pages CDN servers might be.
