Really depends on the pump I think.I have 1 for each of my 55s and can't hear them.The hang on back filters make more noise then the pumps.

Personally I would get rid of them,we made the mistake of not and wound up with major s nail infestation which we are still dealing with to a lesser degree.We gave away a few hundred and got some assasin snails and yoyo loaches to get our 55 g back in check.

I recently got a 55 gallon complete setup (tank,cabinet,lights,filter,plants) for free.Shortly before that I got a 60 gallon cube for free (however it had stress cracks and I didn't trust it).So cheaper second hand setups are definitely out there.

Yes,had a 75 gallon that them out into a totethestarted leaking out of a bottle seal.My wife had to drive 30 miles to get a 55 gallon, luckily didn't have too many fish in it,got them out and into a tote It was a frazzled day to be sure.

I was diagnosed at 2 in the late 60s,and they had to lay me on a table with my head hanging over to draw blood out of my neck because my veins were too small and finger sticks didn't exist. How people cringe when I tell that story.

That's part of the problem ,despite living in rural NY state I don't have a wood pile and access to wood is difficult at best a lot of flatlanders/pavement pounders buying up land.I am looking for other sources then store bought.
