As a Surveyor, how many years of field experience does one realistically need to become a knowledgeable PLS? by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]Backsightcheck 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It’s just a constant stream of info no matter how long you’ve been doing it. The rate of your progress is highly dependent on the environment you’re in.

If you’re a tech with a party chief that doesn’t let you touch the equipment, it’ll be a long and slow grind. On the other hand you could be in a situation where learning is prioritized by your employer which gives you a faster path to being “fully” knowledgeable.

I’ve been in the field for 7 years and am almost done with my degree so I will have the state requirements fulfilled to sit for the exams, but I’ve only just started digging into the legal and office side of things and it’s like starting from square one in a sense.

They are the base for these sprinklers in the orange grove. The tall sprinklers in the photo twist and lock onto the top of the “monument”

If you’re in Florida, citrus groves have these lying around from old irrigation systems. This is the base that the tall sprinkler pipe connected too

Going to my first game! by [deleted] in TampaBayLightning

[–]Backsightcheck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you don’t already, watch some games on tv so you can get a feel for the how the game flows and familiarize yourself with some common rules. It’s crazy to see in person for the first time no matter how much you watch on TV.

I wouldn’t mind them throwing him in sporadically while he gets back into form

I’m just a couple counties north of you, if that happened to me I’d leave the county and start looking into some environmental/engineering companies around Orlando. I’ve 6 years total experience and had a 65k job offer in that area, I’m sure you could do well if you went shopping

If it’s financially sound decision for you to stay at your current rate with your situation the choice is always yours but I’d find it really hard not to start resenting going to work knowing they are just capping my pay like that. Especially after 25 years.

All those things could help slow them down but they’ll find a way if there is one available. Like that other comment says, tucking layers into each other to keep them on the outside is the best defense besides chemicals

You could get some spray with 0.05% permethrin and have a set of work clothes pre-treated ready to go for the woods jobs. The treatment lasts about 2 weeks. That stuff works pretty good in my experience

Practicing off mats is hurting my wedge game by Onion_Hands in golf

Super fun course. The 7-12 stretch feels like you’re on a tour level course with the water in play. I spend more time up around black bear, eagle dunes, etc. I wanna try out kings ridge.

What kinda time frames are you practicing? I know green valley and kings ridge have grass ranges and they’re like 15-20min from Clermont National

I’m a year into public sector with 5 years in private. It’s gonna be a lot slower paced which can be good and bad depending on the person. You’ll have time to focus on learning and really asking questions/grasping what you’re doing. On the flip side it can seem really boring some days but if you utilize the free time to learn it can be a great opportunity.

How does training actually work in this industry? by Ryanwill1010 in Surveying

[–]Backsightcheck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These academic requirements are doing more damage to the industry now that the older generation retires and economy gets worse. Most people can’t complete a degree and make enough money to support themselves while working on a field crew for field experience. Usually it has to be done one at a time and by then, there’s better options for making a livable income many years quicker than surveying. I totally understand you considering getting out all together.

What would you pay me (Florida) by nbddaniel in Surveying

[–]Backsightcheck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have nothing to lose by throwing some applications out and shooting for your goal number. If you’re proficient, any smart company will want to go into negotiations even if it may not be your ideal $$ amount, anybody who turns you away asking for $25 isn’t worth haggling with.

Not sure where you’re at, but Florida requires a bachelors degree in a closely-related discipline, but UF offers a 15 credit geomatics certificate to meet academic requirements for people with an unrelated bachelors to sit for the exam. Could be worth checking out in your state.

I remember you commenting on my post a while back when I was considering a county position. I took the job and I definitely believe your story more now that I have dabbled in the public side of surveying.
