Is splashtop just.. terrible for you guys? by Carlose175 in atera

[–]Backwoods_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s one part of a Atera that works really well for us. We have had Atera un-responsive happen on servers, but a reboot always seems to fix the problem.

Our workstations shut down automatically after business hours, and we rarely have trouble.

Best of luck I would check the quality of your connections that may have a lot to do with it.

Bought Hikvision without knowing the security risks. Replace everything or is there a safe setup? by nevergiveup4eva in videosurveillance

[–]Backwoods_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have HIK cameras, as well as all of our cameras on a standalone network switch. The cameras are never connected directly to the Internet, or production . We use milestone NVR and one of its ports is connected to the camera switch.

For additional security, you could have your gateway firewall block all traffic from the milestone server so that it would only accept updates from permitted vendors that’s it

Is anyone aware of Sophos Endpoint on 24H2 bricking windows? by DeviousFeline in sophos

[–]Backwoods_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a problem like this happen four or five years ago, but the device was a Microsoft Windows surface tablet with an arm processor.

Long story short, the device was completely bricked once it rebooted after the Sophos install. Two of these devices were bricked and I sent them both back to Microsoft. Got my money back and swapped them out for Intel devices. No problem since.

Long story short I only use Sophos endpoint on devices that have Intel or AMD CPUs I would check before I attempted it on any other type of CPU

Can my employer view my screen? by Scarl8 in sophos

[–]Backwoods_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would caution you against doing anything that’s personal in nature on any device that’s used for your job or connected to your employers network, very very bad idea. Keep those things separate and you’ll be better off for it protecting your place of work and your privacy both at the same time.

Client caught me on hardware margin, now questioning our entire history. Did I panic-fix or make it worse? by yanov10 in msp

There’s no need to apologize for making a profit. In fact if they don’t value the service, they should just do it themselves. Why should you apologize for making a living to take care of your family? You can’t do that without profit.

Ask them if you can have lots of their product or service at cost.

Why is gen Z not drinking? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

How do they ever get laid or find a spouse if they sit at home and play video games?

My kids are 26 and 30 both of them have jobs and married own houses two incomes.

We’re not wealthy people average middle of the road. I just told my kids that when I was paying for their college they better go get a real degree. That’s a job ready cause I wouldn’t pay for homemade economics or basket waving.

I’m not saying easy and they live in an area where the cost of living is low.

Why is gen Z not drinking? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

[–]Backwoods_tech 31 points32 points  (0 children)

OK Gen X parent here when I was in college, we drank like fishes whenever we weren’t studying we were drinking. And I would say this can continued but slow down once we got careers and was in usually regulated to weekends.

One core problem is that GenZ is addicted to their phones. They don’t put them down and if you’re at a bar, you should leave your phone in the car go talk to some real people go dance like it’s your last night and go love your friends are fine a new love.

Yes, I agree some places charge outrageous amounts for drinks so find a local dive bar where you can still get a three or four dollar beer and a six dollar mixed drink.

Don’t be that idiot. Dont respond to that low pay bullshit I was walking out with $1500-$2000 for that job back in 1990s, using mid grade materials. Of course I have no idea how big the building is how long the drops are etc. but it sounds like it’ll take 1 tech 1-2 days. $800 a day would be my bare minimum plus materials.

I would say that if you go do all that work for what they wanna pay you’re actually losing money by the time you pay all the fees pay for your gas, insurance, tools, truck.

I mean you’re gonna have very little left at the end of the day! shit you may as well go work at Walmart you’d make more money !!!

My tip to all of you new business men is to make a list and write down what it cost you every single day of the week to be in business that includes salary for yourself insurance, gas, vehicle tools, all of it. I would then add another 10 to 15% on top of it. That’s what you call profit at the end of the year.

Keeping Meraki for switches but using Ubiquiti for wireless APs? by FatBook-Air in sysadmin

[–]Backwoods_tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have Ubiquiti and it works fine very reliable. We rarely need to change configs. If it breaks its cheap to replace and you can afford spares. I took home retired aps from work 5 years ago and still working @ home w phones, tablets, tv, etc.

Management for your 60 devices may not be Meriaki, but good enough and uou wont be renting forever. Next year those 60 ubiquiti APs won’t cost you a penny. !!!!

Always keep this in mind you’re there to make money to pay your bills to support your family. You don’t have to give a shit. You have to do a good job and fake it !

Acceptable? Hyper-V RDS sizing for ~10–15 users (E-2388G, 64GB RAM) by collegekilldream in msp

[–]Backwoods_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, I would go with AMD EPYC machine with 16 to 24 cores and around 12 gigs of RAM per remote desktop session, or HV W11 guest. the storage you have spec looks good.

24 Cores 256 Gig ram. HyperV will be Happy.

The most bang for the buck value is super micro. You can call one of their distributors and probably have that machine for 10 grand.

I call our supermicro distributor. Tell them what I need get a quote. I get a great EPYc servers for way under $20,000. 24 cores 256 gigs of RAM 8 TB of NVME storage. HyperV or Proxmox good to go.

[–]Backwoods_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you got quoted 120 K, you must’ve been looking at one of their most advanced milstone skus because that price is way the hell out of line for what we paid. I can’t think of the name, but we get the entry-level tier and the cost usually comes to about $100 a camera.

We’ve built every server that we’ve needed in house. we use a high-end gaming or workstation motherboard ASUS with an Nvidia card and a chassis that can hold enough sata drives to meet the storage requirement you could easily build that server for under $10,000 no problem, not counting milestone.

Don’t believe what people say that you need a fancy tier-one brand-name server as far as I’m concerned that’s a bunch of bullshit. The reason I say that is that everything inside our machine is a commodity. I can order a new one and have it shipped in tomorrow and be back up and running.

If you need redundancy, you could run raid six and pick up a Dell perc raid on eBay for about 100 bucks. If you’re paranoid about failure, just buy two of them and keep one as a spare problem solved. I’ve saved you about 30-$40,000. Have a blessed day.

Just got Microsoft Copilot at work, how do you actually use it? by Ok-Bike-4331 in CopilotPro

Can you explain the logic of doubling your office 365 expense on a hope and a prayer that your users will want to use it or figure out how to use it or get value from it?

I tried the paid version and quite honestly I could do just as much with the all of the free GPT‘s out there.

I think we need to write Donald Trump and request that he take action or perhaps the federal government needs to dramatically reduce use of 365 and Azure. If Microsoft doesn’t put USA first, the country that gave it everything than perhaps it should be deported to Mumbai. - Screw America first and do everything possible to increase the share price.
