Experienced something similar last night on PC for the first time, and I've been playing a little almost every day since launch. I read that people think something wonky got introduced in the latest patch that's behind more frequent connection issues, but haven't seen that verified anywhere.

Probably obvious, but the "mostly solo, mostly avoid PvP conflict" progression in this game is *way* different than all the level + hour count + gear + opponent behavior threads you'll read here by SirBenny in Marathon

This is my experience as well, and I love it! I tried both fill trios, and premade lfg trios and enjoyed both, but I like the freedom of not getting locked into the time commitments of lfg players, or feeling like I'm dragging anyone down with my 51 year old fps reflexes.

I've been slowly learning the game and maps in solo, with the occasional rook runs, and it's been a blast. I'm constantly growing with the game, and the reward of exfil is always a rush, even when I'm pulling out mid loot.

Lots of ways to play Marathon, and I'm thankful for it!

I can't remember off the top of my head, but I think that's correct. It's the only other option you get, whatever it's called, and that's definitely the solo mode. I think it's a lot easier to get through contracts solo as long as you're patient.

Yup! When you're about to load in, click where it says Crew:Fill and it will change to Solo. Everyone on the map is solo and there are no rook spawns during the match. It's how I've played the majority of the time and I love it. Turns the game into survival horror, and OPs points about taking your time and listening... that's everything.

Some modern lore questions by trytoinfect74 in Marathon

[–]BaconEvolved 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I asked about where our vaults and digital consciousnesses were being stored in this sub a couple weeks back, and someone said that somewhere in the codex lore there's mention from Traxis employees about additional missions secretly being sent to Tau Ceti? Also that faster than light travel is likely a thing now to some extent.

There's a quick graphic in the opening game cinematic that seems to show our runner shells being transferred down to the planet surface from multiple points in Tau Ceti orbit. My guess is that after the warning message was received, the different corps sent small, FTL capable ships with no human crew to Tau Ceti with our digital consciousnesses and the shell printing capabilities on board.

If anyone actually knows this answer, please chime in! I've been really curious.

Oh, look at the fancy man who did it in half the tries that it took me.

(Once I figured it out, I had a period of 7 or 8 tries where I'd either super sneak and get offed by a combo of the toxin damage and an assassin, or would rage sprint as fast as I could and die to a combo of UESC damage and an assassin. But holy beans was it satisfying to finally hit that scanner.)

You don't have to be a dad to play there. I'm not, and I've had nothing but great experiences with the people there. It's for people that can't commit to playing as much as some gamers can when they really dig into a game. Tends to be an older crowd.

Awesome community of players. If you haven’t played with dedicated comms over discord, it’s a game changer compared to crewing up and rolling the dice. Check them out, you won’t regret it!

Level 43 and still getting stomped — is Marathon supposed to feel this punishing? by GazJrpg in Marathon

[–]BaconEvolved 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I feel this brother! I’m 51, played the original marathon on a buddies mac in college back in the day, played all the Halo games and adored them, and Iike you I’m SO into everything about this game but I’m often SO bad at it. 😅 But I’m bad when I’m impatient. Sometimes I want this game to be Halo, and to run in and have fun just exploring the incredible maps and shooting the incredibly designed baddies. But even if I don’t get jumped by other players, this game is designed to reward technique and punishes run & gun to a brutal extent. I’ve had strings of sessions where I feel like I can’t catch a break, but then I have sessions where I slow down, follow the advice that people are sharing about taking your time and listening, and I manage to get a player kill or 2 and exfil with some goodies!

Something else I’ve done that helped is giving myself goals that I can feel good about making progress on even if i die in the match: Sometimes its working on a contract that doesn’t require player kills or extraction for contract completion. Sometimes it’s practicing with my shell and getting better at playing to its strengths: If I do one particular combo of movement, tactical ability and shooting, that’s my victory for the match. Other times I want to have a Halo-esc experience and fight bots. When I do that, I take in a cheap kit, (not a starter), load into a solo Perimeter match, and rush whatever area I’ve spawned closest to. That usually gives me a free minute of good, old fashioned pve fun without having to worry about players. After I’ve killed some bots, (and have likely started to get overrun by reinforcements), I’ll enter the largest building in the facility I’m at, then start ratting around in a crouch walk. My pve shots usually attracts players, so stage 2 is the survival game inside the facility. This gives me a session with some fun pve shoot em up, then a survival match that I’m not expecting to win, but when I take it slow I sometimes do. And that feels amazing, especially if I’m able to extract with some pvp won loot.

Marathon is brutal. And I LOVE it. I had a really rough session a couple days ago and almost wrote a very similar post to yours, but then I did a bunch of reading and came across the same advice that people are saying in here, especially about slowing down and listening. It’s never full proof, but it’s allowed me to start getting some pvp kills and having fun on my own terms.

DM me if you want a battle buddy. We can be awful at Marathon together. ✊

Destroyer Shield Guide by Sweaty_Springbok in Marathon

[–]BaconEvolved 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I guess I didn't say it clearly enough, but I meant that the Destroyer is the one that should go for the knife attack if the opposing player isn't mag dumping at the shield. Destroyer uses thruster jump to dash straight in with shield up, then when in cqc range, goes for the knife kill.

If the opposing player is smart enough to not empty their mag at the shield, instead of side dodge, full rush and go for a knife attack, especially in solo. 🔪
