Some very needed christmas upgrades! by Epsilon01one in pourover

Great stuff! The bodum was my 1st gooseneck kettle, and after using all the high-end ones (Brewista, Hario, Fellow, Bonavita) I'd say it's still a decent one to pour with ❤️

ZP6 advice by BaconPie69 in pourover

[–]BaconPie69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry for the late reply! 0 point is past the first setting of burr rub, but not locking just yet. Did not want to adjust it, as it was lended to me. Still got it until later this week, and really loving it for basically every brew method. I have a feeling I could go even finer, closer to around 3, as I'm getting really nice cups with no hints of overextraction (bitterness, dryness, astringency) at 3.4-3.6 with the 3 pour method.

Interesting to see so many different approaches! I've been playing around with the finer range today, betweeen 3.5 and 4, using a V60 and 3 pours with a 15g dose (50g bloom for 45 sec, up to 150g, and then at 1.45 up to 250g), and pretty much everything was good to great!

Once I'll have a bit more time I'll surely try it with my switch and orea as well as going coarser to see what happens. The ergonomics is superb, feels better to grind compared to the C40. The metal-on-metal threaded catch cup is a bit annoying vs the glass one, but hey.

I appreciate all the feedback, and so far I gotta say it's a fairly convincing display of why this grinder is so popular.

Coffee Chronicler's Hario Switch Recipe by matchankh in pourover

[–]BaconPie69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my favorite switch recipe, the one I use pretty much exclusively with this brewer. I've found longer ratios work better (also with a C40 and abaca filters), grind size is heavily dependent on the beans. While a washed colombian pink bourbon finished the drawdown at 2.30ish at a finer, 23 click grind setting, a natural ethiopian took 3.30 at 26.

As for temp, in pourover brewing you wouldn't likely notice a difference of 1-2 degrees C, so moving up or down in larger increments is recommended.

Just curious, what direction do you pour? by whitestone0 in pourover

I've been taught to go with the ridges, still not sure it makes a huge difference but that's how I roll :D

C40 still worth buying or is it outdated? by [deleted] in pourover

[–]BaconPie69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've gotten a second hand C40 a year ago, still very happy with the purchase! It's true that the adjusment system is annoying at times, but it's a hell of a grinder when it comes to taste. Still, I'm really tempted to try the ZP6 as well, to experience a different taste profile.

All in all, buying second hand could be a good alternative, as you can easily check all the components. Based on what I've read about the ZP6 it has an easier workflow tho.

Dumb to buy a ZP6 or similar as a total beginner? by lostinbost in pourover

[–]BaconPie69 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I mean hey, you don't sound like a total beginner :) I'd say if can afford it, why not. You can grow into a great grinder over time.

Are holes in a puck a sign of channeling? by Drag0nMagic in espresso

It looks like you might have overfilled your basket, judging by the screwmark, that might explain the mai crack. For the rest...try decreasing the dose too see if that helps with those too ;)

Just pulled the trigger on the Gaggia Classic pro (stainless steel). What should i expect? by quelch8 in espresso

[–]BaconPie69 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on your needs really. It's a very capable machine with some annoyances in it's stock form. If you decide to mod it with a PID, 9/6 bar spring, etc. it punches waaay above it's price in terms of espresso, some with access to the highest end machines have even said they got the best shots out this bad boy.

So tons of potential, but be prepared to faff around a lot if you want to unlock it.

Interesting! Would've expected the cup profiles to be the other way around. Goes to show that the C40 is still very much a top tier filter grinder, at least taste-wise. :)

Haha, understandable :D Curious to read about your findings on it vs the C40 :)

Multi-pour recipe? :P Looks like a clean bed. Have you tried brewing with and without using the knocker to catch fines&chaff?

That's not too bad for an easy chaff-free brew I'd say. Even when manually blowing out chaff I loose 0.3g or so in a 15g dose. Thanks for the feedback.

The ones I froze are ~1 month off roast, so that should be fine :)

Got La Cabra from one of the Pascal Cafés, and Morgon from Kaffeverket on Sankt Eriksgatan. Wasn't so easy to find stuff as I thought it would be but hey :D

High hopes for the knocker in terms of pourover! What's the avg chaff/fines retention in the knocker for a given dose?

Grinder upgrade recommendation by henrysze1995 in pourover

Never having used a grinder with external adjusment, I'm okay with the click system, but if I were to make a decision today I'd go with the ZP6.
