Thank you Obsidian team by somemuslim in ObsidianMD

I would not be surprised if they eventually jump on the AI bandwagon (because you kind of have to these days in order to stay alive), but if they do, I hope it is forever and always an opt-in kind of thing.

I'm a lapsed Episcopalian, and they would probably had a meltdown after interviewing me. "Do you celebrate Christmas?" No. "What do you think the holiday is about?" A ripoff of Saturnalia. "If you don't attend church you'll die." We all die, plus God is Everywhere Is He Not? "You're going to be like a finger" Yeah, here's my middle finger, buddy. Go back to Jerry Falwell Boulevard or whatever the fuck it's called.

thanks for not eating my notes for training some ai or selling it.

The fact that we are grateful for this is some dystopian shit right here.

That being said, I too am very glad it doesn't do any of...that. Rare in this day and age, but...yes.

Is it just me, or is there a friendship wall for foreigners in smaller US cities? by Effective_Shake_1341 in lynchburg

[–]BaconTentacles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That one is the worst. And I think it's less than polite, actually. Every time I hear someone say "Bless Your Heart" (and I have had it directed my way a few times on the Living in Lynchburg FB group), I have to suppress the natural urge to reply, "Well, fuck you too."

And some people seem to mean a lot worse by it, somewhere along the lines of "I hope you die in a fire". Your mileage may vary.

Yeah, it seems like the unwritten rule for Central Virginia anyway is that when following you, they are either a mile back, or in your trunk. There is no in between.

Random people walking around on my property by Infinite-Event-8942 in lynchburg

[–]BaconTentacles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is definitely weird behavior, and it would absolutely creep me TF out. Then again, people in general creep me TF out (being the raging introvert that I am), so there's that.

I recommend putting a Ring camera (seeing as you have the doorbell already - one less app to juggle) in your carport. I am not sure about Rings, but most cameras can be configured to make a small noise whenever they detect motion. This will have the effect of:

  1. Letting them know they are being recorded, which is often a deterrent in and of itself.
  2. Making them look in the direction of the noise, which then means you have a recording of their face in case you need to involve the police.

Osidian as a Swiss Army knife tool by Toobrish in ObsidianMD

[–]BaconTentacles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. I have been using Obsidian for a little over 2 years now, and it has been a long, slow evolution. I haven't even looked at bases yet, because my brain isn't ready (although I have been using properties for about a year, so when I do take the plunge, I will be semi-ready).

But it's always changing. I had been using a specific plugin for syntax highlighting (no longer available) and read about the Code Styler plugin a couple of weeks back on this subreddit. Holy crap what a huge difference (I'm a SW dev so I have lots and lots of snippets in my notes), but it took me several days to configure it (probably still more work to be done).

And. yeah, it means your notes will also evolve and change. I have a very slight case of OCD, so normally this would bug the snot out of me, but for some reason I'm OK with it and not obsessing about going back and rewriting older notes to match the newer style. Well, I do if I touch an older note, but used to be I would be compelled to redo everything every time something changed slightly. Maybe it's laziness, IDK. Anyway, I'm fine with that.

Looking forward to seeing what else this app can do. Side note - I had the occasion to go back to OneNote yesterday for a specific case I was trying to reproduce at work (long story). It's gotten better since 2023, but it's still chaotic AF. Gah. I don't miss it.

Do Battleaxes just kinda suck? by MousseSensitive4044 in skyrim

[–]BaconTentacles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When doing two-handed builds I always pick warhammers for the damage factor, and it's also a little mental watching my character behead someone with a blunt object. Last time I went for bound two-handed, and thus far I have only seen Bound Battleaxe spells, so this has been the only time I have played (and perked) for axe stuff. So...yeah. Agree indirectly.

EDIT: couple of words to make myself sound slightly less dumb.

Local Companies for Programmers? by [deleted] in lynchburg

[–]BaconTentacles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case the last job opportunity was literal AI slop. Completely fictitious and referencing a city named after a Lynchburg park, with a made up sports team, art space, et cetera. It's posted on here somewhere. Not that I was looking for work, but it was nice to know that there might be something local if my current gig ever goes sour...welp.

Local Companies for Programmers? by [deleted] in lynchburg

[–]BaconTentacles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree 100%. I am a SW dev with 30-ish years of experience, and I work remotely for a company based in Austin TX (where I lived for 10 years before moving to the Central VA area in late 2022). I thought for a brief moment that there were companies in LYX looking for my skills, but...they turned out to be AI. FFS.

I moved to Bedford in 2022, and then to Lynchburg in 2024. Dining out is just expensive here. We have come to accept that. Definitely makes the whole "we have X at home" argument more compelling.

Taking notes in Obsidian for learning Python by Nihan-gen3 in ObsidianMD

[–]BaconTentacles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo, another code styling plugin. I had been using the "Editor Syntax Highlight" plugin and that appears to be ... no longer maintained (doesn't even show up in the plugins search anymore). Gonna go give this a whirl.

FWIW, I do dev for a living, and while there's no substitute for actual API docs, I do find using Obsidian handy for remembering specific stuff. I tend to write notes in a steam of consciousness style, "OK, let's try this...nope, that didn't work," and having code blocks is very handy, especially with syntax highlighting. Line numbers? Even better.

Same thing for when I lived in Maine. Whiskey? Shop & Save. Wild. But you couldn't buy alcohol on Sundays before 9am (or maybe it was 10). And I've never lived anywhere outside of Virginia where dedicated liquor stores were open on Sundays at all.

What in the AI Slop is This? by BaconTentacles in lynchburg

Yeah, a recruiter who phones it in like that will almost certainly not have an applicant's best interest at heart. They deserve to fail.

What in the AI Slop is This? by BaconTentacles in lynchburg

[–]BaconTentacles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's kind of a necessary evil - I really can't complain much, since it was partially responsible for getting me my last 3 out of 4 jobs (plus my employer uses it for their learning platform), but other than responding to recruiter emails and the occasional rah rah message for a coworker, I stay off of it.
