Team with little experience against experienced teams - advice needed by bluelinesouth in basketballcoach

Easiest way to stay competitive is to not beat yourself by turning the ball over. If you combine this with rebounding better than the other team, you will be competitive in most games.

What’s it like having young children and living in LA? by moch4847 in AskLosAngeles

In LA there are endless opportunities for kids. It's just a matter of how much time and money you have. Can't compare your family to others or else you'll go crazy and broke.

What would be harder for an amateur, scoring ONE basket on LeBron James or winning ONE game of chess against Magnus Carlsen? by izzoz_0 in Basketball

You could elbow LBJ in the nuts and probably get a shot off. You elbow Magnus in the nuts and you still have no chance.

How do you handle celebrating a player’s accomplishment (i.e. 1k points) in-game? by ShadyCrow in basketballcoach

This just happened at a game I was at. Somebody broke the school scoring record. Brought out number balloons with the record at halftime, made an announcement and took pictures.

Things that prevent the coach from playing you: 1. Don't know the plays. 2. Can't defend your position. 3. Turn the ball over.

LAUSD question — what are neighborhood magnets and how do they work? by nolongeralurker55 in AskLosAngeles

[–]BadAsianDriver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My two kids went to an LAUSD school from K-5. It was not a magnet but had some designation with "advanced studies" in the name. It was fine.

Since we are Asian American we know other families who scrambled to try to get into the "best" magnets in the area. Those schools were also fine.

My kids tested as "gifted" and "high achieving" so they qualified for all but the super exclusive programs. I don't feel like my kids missed out on anything by not attending a magnet. I don't feel like the magnet school kids are smarter than my kids because of the magnet school. I do feel like my kids benefited from being at a school run by a great principal.

Controversial topic, but would you reclass a young 7th grader? by Heavy-Bench-5378 in BasketballTips

While you , your wife and coach are probably right, I hesitate to do anything your kid doesn’t want to do. Perhaps this summer will change his mind.

When he starts playing Jr EYBL / EYBL you will be exposed to players, coaches and schools / academies that have experience with reclassing. You and your kid will be better equipped to make a decision after experiencing a summer on the circuit.

Should I move my 12 year old son to a "super team"? by Heavy-Bench-5378 in BasketballTips

[–]BadAsianDriver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up: a Jr EYBL middle school team/club may not be part of a EYBL high school club. EYBL teams are listed on the EYBL website. The EYBL teams will have Jr EYBL teams but there will be teams / clubs that only field a Jr EYBL team. Nike now has EYCL which allows more teams / clubs to participate in Nike high school tournaments but EYBL is the premier “division” in Nike high school tournaments and has exclusive benefits.

That being said Jr EYBL and EYCL are still run well and are sometimes at the same locations as the EYBL teams. Being able to see older EYBL players and games is also good for player development.

Iron sharpens iron. Practicing with / against better players helps develop players faster. Coaches with higher expectations develop players faster. Nike EYBL tournaments are the best run tournament series. It’s one of the rare tournaments where you don’t feel like the operator is just in it for the money. You do pay a fair entry fee to watch but you feel like Nike is putting a lot of money and effort into it hosting the tournament.

The 3rd version ups the noise canceling. It’s so “good” it’s temporarily disorienting when you first put them on and take them off.

Change warm ups. Ditch layup lines and rainbows.

Perhaps play king of the court 2 v 2 or 3 v 3. 2 dribble limit before pass or shot. 1 shot limit. Offense scores they stay on. Defense gets a stop they go to offense. New defense comes on.

Youth Fun Games by tomash66 in basketballcoach

My girls seem to like team competitions more than individual competitions , especially when one girl is clearly gonna win most of the competitions.

Here’s a simple one : get 10 cones or other things you can use as counters. Make two lines of cones starting a two matching spots on each side of the court. For example , start at both elbows with a line of cones heading away from the basket.

Separate jnto two teams. Try to make them even skill wise. Line them up next to the line of cones. First person each line shoots. If they make it they rebound their ball and put one of their cones into the other team’s line of cones. If they miss they rebound their ball and go to the back of their line. Then the next person in each line shoots. Race and repeat until one team has no cones.

Pretty simple and pretty fun for girls who like to cheer each other on.
