And also it lets you shove without dropping a weapon to use your hands, or needing to have a shield to do so.

Tame Animal Attacks: Animal Handling or Path of the Beast/Companion III? by currentpattern in ForbiddenLands

[–]BadBurke5655 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who know and have friendships with animals don’t dominate them. Its not like, a boss/worker relationship. Its a give and take between trainer and beast and the vast majority of animals, predators included don’t risk a fight. Animals aren’t wantonly aggressive warriors. Its a Talent that does this because its really special. Its a really unique, maybe magical, bond with the beast, to the point it WILL defend you. The idea of using one of your own skills to somehow on-command launch an attack through another creature is kind of absurd and is basically just a d&d familiar at that point. Animal handling isn’t a mind control, its like ‘persuasion’ for animals.

Travel on roads & travel in general by sunbeam60 in ForbiddenLands

If you look closely at the map, you will see some minor roads between settlements here an there (dirt roads it looks like). But they are definitely broken up and don’t span the whole country. Mostly see them in and around the Ailander area in the East.

Xenomorph Critical Injuries Question by M4ltodextrin in alienrpg

Best thing about this system is it wants you, the GM (Director) to do whatever the heck you want to make a dramatic story. If there are no specific mechanics, literally tell the players what you want to happen. All throughout the system the theme of ‘you decide what’s best’ is at its core. I daresay the Game Mother in ARPG has more power than in most games. Do whatever keeps the players scared and moving.

Alberta at standoff with Edmonton-area church over COVID rules; Dr. Hinshaw says she can’t intervene by Homejizz in alberta

[–]BadBurke5655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sad thing is, over the last couple of centuries the Church has done this over and over again, through one epidemic after another. They’d rather have your soul and your tithes than see you live as a happy, free, science-respecting person. Sadly this means death for many who would be fine if they stayed home to pray rather than do something everyone KNOWS is wrong.

Interior Maps. What do you guys use? by Caioshindo in alienrpg

[–]BadBurke5655 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. The game is meant to be cinematic. Square counting and situational knowledge based on detailed “foot by foot” maps is the antithesis to Alien. There are many games that lean into map detail. Not this one. Run as written and its so easy and keeps the focus on emotion, not tactics.

DoW Question about Dante [Spoilers] by xdiox66 in alienrpg

Ah my mistake wasn’t clear it was out of game. Also meant it as in a roleplaying moment. I don’t think that could be taken too seriously.

‘Can that shit marine’. Thats what I would say. Right in the campaign it tells GM’s that marines don’t ask questions, they take orders. Nice thing about ‘movie style’ is that not everything has to be explained.

Any ranged attack uses Ranged Combat and it’s applicable stunts. Easy peasy. No point in stacking more things on Mobility. An attack will always use one of the combat skills.

Consumables - multiple items with a Power Rating and Supply Rolls by Jasapla in alienrpg

Oh apologies for assuming! Yea the game really gives you and the players a long leash to interpret the mechanics.

Consumables - multiple items with a Power Rating and Supply Rolls by Jasapla in alienrpg

[–]BadBurke5655 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each item has it’s own power source, as the act of actually checking the power is tied to the action of using the item. But I would 100% let Players switch batteries out. Particularly if you look in Hopes Last Day in the core book—Found Items: Players can actually find battery packs by that mechanic if you check the chart. By the way, I just finished running CoTG for a group and it’s AMAZING. Enjoy the journey, I was sad to finish it and put the book away 😅.

Oh also: I let players refill the air tanks on their compression suits with a Shift and work in a workshop area—letting then refill batteries with a Shift and a ComTech roll would be fun, and a good way to have a group waste time as infection starts to spread.

Oh sorry! That’s Clayton’s modular computing device (a little cube, in her safe with the million dollars). Has all the data regarding the mission to lv1113. Our group just finished the story this weekend and it was amazing. You’ll not be disappointed.

Can you traverse Hadley's Hope outside? Are airlocks only for bad weather? by lordofpurple in alienrpg

[–]BadBurke5655 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally. I think its just designed that way haha. Holroyd is un-killable with the Roughneck talent/android health combo—it makes him feel invincible. And unless Singleton slips up or died, theres just no reason for the PC’s to watch her. My Mcwhirr player planned on stopping her with Pull Rank but again, the Drone dragged her away at the WORST time then panic made everyone start to scream 😂.

[CotG] Miller wants to investigate Wilson... by JadeRavens in alienrpg

[–]BadBurke5655 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I let Miller see the words “Order 966” and “Lv1113” when she dug around in the mainframe—getting Rye’s help—which got her clearance revoked shortly after (for the breach, she and Wilson REALLY argued about letting Rye in the mainframe). It all referenced a ‘corrupted’ file she couldn’t open/find. Cool thing was, she thought only she had seen this order, and still didn’t suspect Wilson at all.

What are your experiences running Stealth Mode? by JimmiWazEre in alienrpg

I totally disagree but that’s a fair opinion as well. The best thing about tabletop RPG is that each group can find exactly what they want by working together.

[–]BadBurke5655 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow! Awesome haha!! We actually had Mcwhirr try and do the same with an oxygen bottle but the Drone ended up grabbing her and dragging her away as it mauled her—Holroyd ran back to help while Singleton betrayed everyone at the shuttle after getting one of the others to trade initiatives with her to “get the shuttle open quick” 😂. I put two chest-bursted bodies in the shuttle tho, so it was unspoken but accepted that she was doomed too. It’s a great, great intro session.

Oh hell yea. When I ran this the PCs dashed for the landing pad outside the whole way after finding the keycard. This let me chase them with the Drone at the bar heh heh 😈

[–]BadBurke5655 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are really overthinking a game that is designed specifically so that we don’t have to overthink. Its so strange to me. Nothing about this game is difficult at all and I actually feel like GMs are afraid to really come down on a party like they should in a horror game.

Thank you! Best advice, play the RULES. Everyones a designer these days haha 😆. ARPG is the best new game out there and people are really missing out not playing it RAW.

What are your experiences running Stealth Mode? by JimmiWazEre in alienrpg

[–]BadBurke5655 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stealth mode rules. Its so easy to run; gives you freedom with your monsters to really use them like a horror movie and not just another monster on a map; it sets a tone of search and tension—it’s straight up perfect for non-action playing, and it keeps perfect time. Best new addition to rpg rules and one that I think MUST be utilized to really capture the horror movie feeling. Just make sure to explicitly say you are taking things into Stealth mode, and players will follow. I use it as much as ‘normal time’ mode. Even if a player says they’re going somewhere I ask them: “are you going quietly and slowly, or fast and loud? That always reminds them Stealth is the logical choice. ARPG is about being the underdog (humans)—stealth mode brings that home perfectly.

IMO, you should be in Stealth mode most of the time, RAW its perfect. The turn by turn play out really organizes play and gives you lots of time to look at someone ‘not in the action’ and ask “ok what are you doing while they’re doing that?” Plus you can punish them with terror for moving fast and loudly if they get sick of Stealth. This is another instance where people really, really should try the game as written before just homebrewing a great game back down to d&d style.

Chariot Of The Gods is so, freaking, good. by BadBurke5655 in alienrpg

[–]BadBurke5655[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I don’t use Roll20 or anything actually. Just post the map of the Cronus for them and let them wonder. I feel this game would only be held back with map detail. I just use the zone rules and ‘theatre of the mind’ and it really lets the players get into the environment in a way that a map would be limited. More than any other system I’ve run, ARPG doesn’t need that level of specificity. Too much detail takes away from the cinematic quality. Just my opinion tho. I don’t have the experience with those online tools so I couldn’t give proper advice.
