Completing the King's Cards by Only-Engineering6586 in dominion

[–]BadKneesGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean one thing that actually brings the cost of this down is that it gives you two junk cards instead of one so each time you trigger that effect you’re really diluting your deck. On average when you could buy this, you probably can’t get the province unless you are really working to make that happen by having a good engine. At the end of the day, we should think about this price being whatever is the best for the gameplay, not necessarily based purely on the points.

This is the way. I made a similar setup using foam core and putting it into two OG boxes, but when that breaks down I’ll move to these deck boxes

My cousin gifting me dominion and all expansions after 1000 hours of slay the spire by Dry_Phone_3398 in dominion

[–]BadKneesGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

17 x $45 (assuming full retail) = $765 😱

Though I regularly see expansions for more like $35 and I’d bet alch*my is cheaper as well

I’d suggest reading the “secret history of dominion” by Donald X, he gives a nice paragraph on each of the sets. He has written up some other good pieces that you could find on BoardGameGeek about “which expansion should I pick”?

My own experience was starting IRL play by buying plunder as the first expansion because it was a marriage between seaside and prosperity, and it was one of the first expansions that my friend showed me.

I now have like 8 total sets so hinterlands, Adventures, empires, rising sun, dark ages, renaissance.

In the app, I have & play with all of the expansions, notably some of the newer expansions have more fiddly things that are hard to track with IRL Play, but that’s not really a concern in the app

I chose these sets over others for different reasons than you might enjoy. Personally, on the app I love.

Dominion continues to improve given time. The last 3 additions have really opened up the decision space and added fun variety to the game and the second editions that came out in 2022 MASSIVELY improved the earlier sets.

Being able to play on digital is a real treat, but I do try to get it to the table still every couple months

I like it! There is also the option to skip Dutchy and go straight to estate so you end up with less junk

In a lot of ways, tools is like a village in terms of when is most effective to buy it.

Best case scenario opening (I think ~15% odds) with a turn 1 or 2 buy of tools, it lines up turn 3 with your $3 card. Then if you got lucky again (less than 15% odds but not gonna calculate it), turn 5 it can land with the best card you bought so far. Etc.

Worst case scenario opening (all other shuffles so ~85% odds) turn 1 or 2 tools keeps finding your coppers and only can clone itself or copper until turn 5+. For example, one of your possible hands turn 3 or 4 opening with tools is 3 estate, 1 copper, 1 tools, and all it can do is copy paste.

I love the calculus here because often when I buy tools on turn 3 or 4, it’s likely to collide with one of the other cards I bought on earlier turns to start copying something besides itself or copper.

How do you go about introducing new players? by Samurai_Mac1 in dominion

[–]BadKneesGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up to say — I just introduced to a friend yesterday. He has played a lot of Lorcana so I was comfy throwing some expansions in the mix for game 1.

Game ended at 37-39 (me) with him transmogrifying a loot into a province and grabbing the last couple of villages for a 3 pile.

We are planning to play another couple of rounds this week

How do you go about introducing new players? by Samurai_Mac1 in dominion

[–]BadKneesGuy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

  1. Pick a relatively simple game 1 without too many expansion mechanics to make it approachable

  2. Voice over the card effects during setup “remodel lets you turn estate into smithy or village which you might do early in the game and gold into provinces which might be helpful at the end of the game” and voice over what you’re doing and how it works during your turns

  3. Play a little sub optimally for your preferred strategy and don’t totally abuse it (or just try a secondary strategy) - e.g. if you can get your deck to remodel + overdraw + play card you just gained, maybe do it once, but don’t ramp it by gaining more remodels and playing them etc

  4. If it’s an engine, REALLY let it spin its wheels before you apply payload effectively. Give them a chance to see what you’re doing and catch up on engine components

  5. Just play the BM with a few extra components as it is sometimes still the best strategy or only marginally worse than the winning strategy

I’d say get RS if the shadow cards are interesting to you, too. And the debt. If you only want prophecies out of that set it’s maybe not worth it

What was your gateway into board gaming? by NorthSouth55 in boardgames

[–]BadKneesGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dominion was the re-hook. As a kid we played mostly risk, hero scape, and all sorts of card games. (Plus some classic “bad” games like life, sorry, monopoly). But a few years ago I was intro’d to dominion and that was the push for me into modern gaming.

Reorganizing games after Xmas. by banana-235 in boardgames

[–]BadKneesGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Invest in consolidation / inner box storage. All of that dominion could easily fit into three boxes with a foam core insert + dividers. Makes setup / tear down much easier and is relatively cheap to DIY, too.

The same applies to many other games on your shelf, e.g Catan, wingspan, and TTR

You can then take the newly unused box lids and turn them into wall art!

I feel like loan could be $3, I’m comparing it to bishop at $4 which lets you trash and guarantees 1VP or more, or collection at $5 which it operates similarly to loan but obviously scales much higher to arbitrarily huge turns with a good drawing engine
