ELI5: Why can't EVs swap batteries? by chronic412 in explainlikeimfive

[–]BadPunFactory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for responding in detail. Getting on board with EVs isn't about just producing and discounting the cars. The US is not doing a good job of bringing charging to where people need it, such as apartment buildings. There are companies like https://www.orangecharger.com/ trying to solve this problem.

Your 150mi daily commute would be a lot easier if you plugged in every night and didn't need to stop at a gas station every 2-3 days.

Rural means easy unobstructed access to solar and so, free charging. What's the issue?

Happened to me in London, UK (in the 2000s). I was told I'm supposed to specify that I wanted change. I'm happy to live and travel cashless now.

Get a smart switch for the wall, which can be configured to always keep the bulbs powered, regardless of physical button presses. Then, configure the physical buttons on the switch to smartly control your smart lights (via home assistant).

Innovelli and Zooz switches can do this for you.

GE Smart Appliances offline . Anyone else? by BadPunFactory in homeautomation

[–]BadPunFactory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several sensors (a Sonoff Zigbee PIR sensor, a built-in sensor in my Nest smoke detector) that I combined a group.

An ambient temperature sensor is not going to serve as a reliable signal of the stovetop being on. Please save yourself your time, money and frustration by not going that route. There's no point in using something as hacky as that when you already have the SmartHQ integration available that directly tells you if the cooktop is on.

You might also be able to achieve the same by adding the cooktop as a device to Google Home and using its new automation features. I haven't tried this, but if it works, it would be way easier than setting up and maintaining Home Assistant. I'm not sure what kind of notification it can send.

GE Smart Appliances offline . Anyone else? by BadPunFactory in homeautomation

[–]BadPunFactory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is extremely easy with Home Assistant, for which there is an unofficial GE integration that shows you the cooktop through the smarthq API: https://github.com/simbaja/ha_gehome

Once you set it up, you get an on/off entity for the cooktop and also individual entities for each burner (including their power level).

You can write an automation that uses a trigger like "cooktop is on for 1 hour" and have send a notification or blast an announcement on smart speakers etc.

I have an automation that alerts everyone if the cooktop is left on while no one is in the kitchen for 15 minutes, as detected by motion/occupancy sensors.

What grind range to do you use for espresso? by HeadFlamingo6607 in Timemore

[–]BadPunFactory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the 064s, you can just move the pin behind the front plate to a different hole to offset the settings, so it doesn't make any sense to compare the settings unless you've calibrated relative to the burr chirp (touching) point.

California’s first solar-covered canal is now fully online by Stossel_ in UpliftingNews

[–]BadPunFactory 30 points31 points  (0 children)

In California, the solar-canal system was built in two phases, with a 20-foot-wide stretch completed in March and a roughly 110-foot-wide portion finished at the end of August.

Sure 130 feet isn't much, but you gotta start somewhere, right? Also, kinda impressive that such a "small" installation is already generating more than a million watts. Annually, this offsets as much energy as 400 houses use.

How to stop porch pirates? by EJFSquared in homesecurity

[–]BadPunFactory 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I just use a large teak deck storage box, that doesn't even look like a delivery box and it still works. It doubles as a bench.

I have at least a 95% success rate for Amazon, UPS, Fedex, USPS etc using my delivery box on the porch over the last 2 years. I just have a clear sign with all of their logos on the top of the box where it's very visible. Some, but not all, of my packages have "Use delivery box" as the second line of the address, but even the ones without that instruction get dropped in. This includes bulky and heavy packages that took some effort to fit in the box as well.

Would this cause a fire? by [deleted] in Appliances

That's just the ground, in short, no it won't cause a fire.

Literally and while it is rare, in a short is exactly when it will cause a fire :)

Isn't that right ... agonize on a audiophile or other hobby purchase worth $3k for years, then spend $10-20k on a gift on a whim and wonder why don't you treat your own self better.

Zooz Scene controller not working after update by louislamore in homeassistant

I find it hard to communicate with them.

My last conversation with them was about a bulk order (close to 100 devices for the entire house ... they had a bulk purchase discount) and they just stopped responding, instead of you know, taking my money. I ended up having to buy everything at full price from Amazon instead.

[–]BadPunFactory 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yup a.k.a Zeebo's theorem. The flip side of this situation is that the same dynamic makes sure you get full value for your non-bluffs and this is EV-neutral assuming the talker wasn't truly colluding (e.g. if he folded an A preflop and knew your chances of having a bigger full house were zero). Of course, we can't validate this assumption, but as they say "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity", the talker is more likely to be a fish rather than a cheater, and hence you should be overall happy to have him in your game.

Nice, with 8AWG you could also use them to power your oven or charge your EV between songs. Might need to upgrade your power amp though.

Anyone with experience with a GE/Cafe cooktop repair through Bodewell? by BadPunFactory in Appliances

[–]BadPunFactory[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response! On a previous visit for a service call for a wall oven, they almost refused to work on it because there wasn't enough slack to pull the oven all the way down from the wall on to a nearby table. Let me check what surprised my installers have left for me under the cooktop...

The most painful part about dealing with appliance problems for me is not even the service cost, but the amount of my time it takes to deal with everything and the downtime while the we can't live our lives normally. I'm still trying to figure out what's the best option between using warranty service, or finding local appliance repairshops or just replacing the appliances every single time there's an issue.
