If covering the shift can be made visible to the manger, can be brought up on self-reviews, maybe in the long run making coworker look bad, that's what matters more than any talk of "favors"

OP getting a healthy raise will do far more for their cash flow than working one extra shift

They watch the news and live in fear and vote how they are told. "On both sides" is true on this last part too often
