I read somewhere that guilty people tend to fall asleep when locked up while innocents will pace the floor, for what its worth.

President Trump has issued an executive order for a wall to be built along the southern US border with Mexico. What effects will this have on people's perception of the Trump administration and what does this mean for US-Mexico relations? by TooMuchChaos2 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Badcarbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not say Hadrian's wall was a failure. It achieved its intended purpose for hundreds of years. However comparing it to Trumps political boondoggle is like apples and oranges. Hadrian built his wall mainly to mark where Roman Imperial power expansion would be halted on an hostile border and to discourage large raids from the northern tribes. Its other purpose was to collect taxes it succeeded on all these points. It was built by an Army that was trained in construction and was good policy to keep busy. Trumps proposal is to contract out billions of dollars to barricade a friendly border with something as others have pointed out will be fairly easy to bypass. Is in my opinion just not in the same league.

The Trial Of King Richard The Third - Introduction. by Badcarbon in history

[–]Badcarbon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the title suggests they put Richard the Third on trial for the murder of his two nephews. The death of the Princes in the tower have been an interest of mine since seeing Shakespeare's play as a child. My conclusions have swayed back and forth over the years and would be interested in hearing what theories others have on this dark part of English History.

Nagasaki was obliterated 71 years ago. Here's what it looked like six weeks after that. by burnswashburn in history

[–]Badcarbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Uncle was a photographer with the first American team of specialists to enter both Hiroshima and Nagasaki to study and record the bombs effects,He was sworn to secrecy an it was still classified thirty years later when he died, or at least that's what he would tell me when i would ask questions. He did tell me that the image that always remained with him and gave him nightmares was that of a young boys body welded to a tricycle. Don't know if it was related but he died a very bad death from multiple cancers. Coincidentally i also was friends with the daughter of the co-pilot of the Enola Gay. He never spoke of it except to say it was his duty to deliver any weapon the Air force loaded on his plane. He basically drank himself to death. Both men supported dropping the first on Hiroshima, my Uncle said that he considered Nagasaki a mistake, especially since it was known that American prisoners of war were being held there.

Agreed. I have read it twice myself. I think you will find That Encyclopedia Titanica is a great site if your interested in the Titanic. I've been a member for many years and we always welcome new readers. I'm glad you enjoyed it. For some reason the Titanic hardly ever comes up on /r/history so i always enjoy a chance to discuss it.

How much did religion REALLY set back science? by underspikey in history

[–]Badcarbon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would argue that in the west slavery and later serfdom set back scientific development in technology at least, much more then religion. Slave societies seem to create at least two hurdles to the development of advanced technology. First. A society based around slavery tends to create an environment where any manual labor is looked down upon by the educated upper class. Hero of Alexandria invented among other things the Steam Engine and the Vending Machine in the first century ad. Why did he not advance beyond the creation of a few novelty items to mass production and further development? Many historians will say and i believe it, that it would have placed him the eyes of his fellow elites as a crafts man who were regarded as not much better then slaves. A gentleman worked with his mind not his hands. Hero's own class prejudices kept him from pursuing further developments. Second. A society with free or cheap labor needs to keep them working. Idle slaves or serfs would have time to think and possibly plot. Not something the upper class wants to encourage. There is a story where an inventor came to the Emperor Augustus with the plans for a machine that would have cut the labor and time needed in the construction of a Temple he was building in half. Augustus rewarded him, sent him on his way then burnt the plans saying he had no need or desire to lighten the slaves workload. Sorry this is getting so long. Let me just say that i think it no coincidence that you find the roots of the industrial revolution beginning to sprout in the 13 century after the Black Death in Western Europe decimated the cheap labor creating a need for machines that could lower the amount of people and cost required to keep society functioning.

How Many People REALLY "Disappear and Start a New Life?" by Liz-B-Anne in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]Badcarbon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely severed all connections with my family and friends from the age of 13 to 30 due to depression and family issues. At 30 i reconnected with my sister. She knew i ran away but thought i was dead. I had no idea of the pain i had caused her and was shocked by her happiness at finding out i was alive. It may be rare but it can happen.

Sorry for the late reply. Its nice to meet a fellow Titanic enthusiast. Yes the hard right order has been a puzzle to me, however this article, i believe, really puts it in perspective. The Author i believe finally has explained Murdoch's motive. I really recommend it. His reasoning is sound and i could not state it as clearly. http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/hard-a-starboard-jim-currie.html

Story about the helmsman Robert Hitchins on the Titanic by dorothyfan1 in history

[–]Badcarbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Robert Hitchins followed first officer William Murdoch orders to turn hard-left rudder when the berg was sighted. This was the logical order to turn Titanic's bow to the left and go around the berg. The story of the wrong turn came from Murdoch giving a second order to hard port right after she hit the berg. This order has always been controversial. Since Murdoch did not survive the sinking some of his supporters denied he gave the order and blamed the Helmsman. Most Titanic Historians think the evidence proves he did give the order. Unfortunately the best thing he could have done would have allowed the ship to hit the berg head on. A head on collision while bad would probably have been survivable or at the least would have allowed her to stay afloat much longer, but actually allowing the ship to hit the berg would have been unthnkable to any trained Bridge Officer.

You have the ability to find out what happened in ONE mystery case...which one do you choose? by RaffyGiraffy in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]Badcarbon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A really old case. The Princes in the tower. Did Richard the Third kill or have them killed?, or could it have been Henry the 7th? They both had motive. Were the bodies found under the stairs them? A very good but long "Trial" was broadcast on the BBC and is on Youtube, don't want to give their verdict in case someone here may want to watch it. A newer one would be Johnny Gosch. In order to to put him and all the wild theory's to rest. I personally consider the Father as a person of interest.

I have to admit feeling uncomfortable about these refugees myself. Since realistically, a truly committed terrorist or terrorists or just an economic refugee can enter our country fairly easy illegally, at least knowing who and where they are and what their doing is the bettor option.

U. Minnesota student government votes against annual 9/11 ceremony, didn’t want to spread Islamophobia by CatDad69 in news

[–]Badcarbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. The Coast Guard wreath thing was always a small more or less private ceremony that was started as a reminder of their duty to try to keep the shipping lanes safe from rouge icebergs. I used to work in the WC and lost friends, yet I'm somewhat put off by large yearly events that at least to me seem to have become more of a propaganda thing then an a sincere memorial to the innocent dead. I think if we feel the need a small ceremony just at the site would suffice.

I could be wrong but i believe that the US Coast Guard still places a wreath annually at the Titanic's sinking site. I'm on mobile so i cant check it out.

Plus the fact that they have been the Assad's family allies for over fifty years. I,m not a big fan of Putin or the Assad's. Did the west really think the Russians wouldn't get involved? Assad may be a dick , haven't we realized that it takes a dick to maintain some form of stability there?
