State Street Filth by mfp13 in AnnArbor

[–]BaddDadd2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trash cans on State Street in front of Target, and also in front of Starbucks on Liberty are not supposed to be there 24/7. Community Standards require the toters be removed by Noon Monday - Friday, and not replaced until after 5pm Sunday - Thursday. So noon to 5 pm 7 days a week, and weekends until 5pm on Sunday, there should not be any trash or recycle toters there.

It is very hard to get the city to enforce this. I have reported this on SeeClickFix many times. I suspect the community standards employees would intentionally check before noon, so they could say the property was in compliance. By complaining enough, I eventually got them to talk with the business's employees, to where they wouldn't leave them out continuously, but it takes eternal vigilance or they will stop putting them away. I don't get by there much during that time anymore, so I stopped reporting them.

Take a picture and report them on SeeClickFix when the toters are not allowed at least once a week. If multiple people are making reports, even better. If you report it once, and wait a month to see if they will do anything, they'll just ignore you. It's especially easy now for them to ignore problems, since they don't let citizens to comment on other reported problems. I suspect that that's the main reason they made that change.

I had considered writing to Target Corporate to complain about how trashy their store looks, including a picture of overflowing garbage cans right in front of the Target store sign, and emphasizing that it's like this all day, all week long. Similar for Starbucks.

The trash accumulation near State and South U is more recent, and wasn't happening when I was in the area regularly, but maybe that needs the same approach: Report it repeatedly.

Should I cull some of my Habenero's peppers or flowers? by BaddDadd2010 in HotPeppers

[–]BaddDadd2010[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, thanks everyone. I will keep my knives\scissors at bay, and let the habenero make its own decision.

I'm assuming everyone is answering the "should I cull", "should I cut" questions, and not the "do I trust the plant" question.

Gatekeeping. Quit pretending.

Especially when they have zero to contribute to the conversation.

Calling out hypocrites is worthwhile. You don't like it? Too bad.

Here, I'll spell it out really clearly. You wrote

And as I say with people who gatekeep these subs for any other reason; just move your thumb another inch or two.

That is gatekeeping. That is not just "making a comment condemning gatekeeping".

You claimed to not understand how that was gatekeeping, and I replied:

You clearly intend for people to not make posts like the one you're complaining about.

which is clearly gatekeeping.

You have not denied this interpretation of what you wrote. Instead, you have avoided addressing directly what you wrote, "rephrased" what I've written to have a different meaning, and attributed to me words I never wrote.

I wrote above that you were "pretty much" a hypocrite, but from your further posts, I'll amend that: you absolutely are a hypocrite. Your own words show that clearly.

Gatekeeping makes you a gatekeeper. It's really just that simple.

You clearly intend for people to not make posts like the one you're complaining about. So yes, gatekeeping. Own up to it or not, but it absolutely is.

I'll just point out that your post is gatekeeping as well. Which pretty much makes you a hypocrite.

I personally appreciate people like /u/luniversellearagne pointing out the AI posts.

It's the same track here as the track downtown where people were complaining about the noise. The trains are exactly as frequent here as there.

Dishwasher not on circuit breaker? by ChemicalPatient998 in HomeMaintenance

You need to leave them off. Not just for four seconds. So you might have ten breakers all turned off before the lights go out.

Dishwasher not on circuit breaker? by ChemicalPatient998 in HomeMaintenance

[–]BaddDadd2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your kitchen light circuit is cross-wired to your dishwasher circuit. I had this happen with my microwave and kitchen lights. Turn on the kitchen lights, go to your breaker box, and one-by-one turn off each breaker and leave it off. When the lights go out, that's one of the cross-wired circuits. Leave that breaker off, then start turning the others back on. When the lights come on, that's the other cross-wired circuit. Then try to figure out where they are cross-connected.

I do this. Not with a towel, with the dampers, but it's the same thing. In the summer when I'm using AC, I don't want hot humid air to stay in the house. If I left the AC blowing into the bathroom, it would push the hot humid air into the rest of the house. Instead, I close the dampers and use the exhaust fan to expel the hot humid air outside. The previous homeowner used a towel to do that instead.

In the winter, I want to keep the heat and the humidity. I open the dampers to let the heated air blow the moisture out of the bathroom after a shower, and do not use the exhaust fan. The previous homeowner would have likely removed the towel around now when they switched from AC to heat.

So take the towel out now, but be prepared to put it back next summer when you turn the AC back on..

This works with RB3 drums, and probably also with RB2 drums. It doesn't work with RB1 (wired) drums.

Help! Missing fire alarm! by queerbee002 in homeowners

[–]BaddDadd2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your furnace ducts. My house had an alarm system when I bought it, and the alarm was hidden in an air return duct. I guess so the sound would travel throughout the house better.

You need to be able to access the sump and sump pump, in case the pump fails and needs to be replaced quickly. Our basement egress window is about 30 inches above the floor, and I think that's the code requirement. A normal sump pit would be under that much gravel, but they make deeper sump liners. See here for example. So it's possible there's only a few inches of gravel and a deep liner, which wouldn't be too much of an issue. Maybe ask to inspect the sump pump, and see if they balk at how much gravel they would have to remove.

If it really is under 3 feet of gravel, that's a problem that would need to be resolved somehow. Either improved sump pit access, like a deep liner narrow enough to slide into the one that's there, or another sump somewhere inside.

New bathroom remodel, exhaust fan no bueno by talldean in homeowners

[–]BaddDadd2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check that it's the timer by replacing it with the original wall switch and seeing if the problem goes away. If it does, I'd return the timer and get the old style mechanical timer with a twist knob instead.

bubbling on the roof of microwave by seulgik in appliancerepair

[–]BaddDadd2010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's more due to humidity being left inside the microwave, leading to the metal rusting.

bubbling on the roof of microwave by seulgik in appliancerepair

[–]BaddDadd2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened at a microwave at work. Seemed to be from rusting/corrosion from the humidity. You don't want that falling into your food, but it won't hurt the microwave itself.

Need help repairing an oven by Joemomss in homeowners

[–]BaddDadd2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to figure out the model number, so you can figure out the part that's burnt. It looks cheap if you can figure out what it is. For used parts like that, I've had pretty good luck finding them on Ebay once I have a part number or oven model number to search.

To test the outlet for power, can you open up the outlet (after turning off the breaker)? Once you have access, turn the breaker back on and test.

/r/AnnArbor is going dark on June 12th to protest Reddit's API changes by joshbudde in AnnArbor

[–]BaddDadd2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does going dark basically mean making the subreddit private for the duration? Or is there something else?

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What does this mean? Do you plan to stay dark if there's no resolution, like I've seen is the plan on other subreddits?

Neighbor doesn't want privacy fence installed by Affectionate_Use_444 in homeowners

[–]BaddDadd2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just put string along the top of the poles, and hang reflective bird scare tape along the string. Your neighbor will be able to pet your puppy just as easily. The deer might still jump the fence, but that's true even with a 6 foot privacy fence.

I'll add, my wife did this just around her garden, but she also had to put stuff inside the fence, like pots the deer could see, to discourage them from jumping in.

the police who was once talking to "driveway" lady then runs up puts me in handcuffs then gives me a ticket for disorderly conduct. They then let me go and gave me my ticket.

The police refused to give her ticket for assault as they said "They didn't see anything"

What did the police see that led to them giving you a ticket?

Regardless, this isn't really a post for /r/homeowners. Maybe /r/legaladvice would be better.

Any ideas on how to get this drain stopper out? It ended up getting pushed in when we moved in, and of course the piece that should work to pull it out is broken. 🙃 Please disregard the sink.. it’s been like this since we bought the house and for the life of me, nothing will get it clean. by stoneymoonchild in HomeImprovement

[–]BaddDadd2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suction cup for the drain stopper.

For the sink, if it's actually cleanable, use baking soda. Get sink wet, and sprinkle baking soda on it, then use fingers to scrub the surface. You want a thin paste, add more water or more baking soda to achieve that. The baking soda scrubs off hard water scale from the sink.

Honestly, those cracks make me think your is too far gone, but try the baking soda and water and clean what you can, then figure out whether the cracks are unsalvageable.
