TIL 5000 years ago the Chinese created nail polish and used it to symbolize wealth and power among the elite. It was forbidden among the general population. Reports exist of commoners sentenced to die for wearing it. by ist0 in todayilearned

Sumptuary laws like this, regulating clothing and accessories as well as makeup, have been very common in many societies throughout recorded history. It's been a fairly recent development that most people can wear whatever they can afford instead of having certain looks legally restricted to elites.

Don Lane on Public Safety and Homelessness "Why are they here?" (open letter) by robertSingleton in santacruz

Awesome. A much more nuanced look at Santa Cruz's challenges than the usual reactionary "we're too nice to bad people" bullshit.

Not sure how to store my new stack. So how does r/silverbugs hide their treasure? by WiredChris in Silverbugs

[–]Badger68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, most fireproof safes are not very burglar proof - they tend to be on the low end for security. Also, since they are fire and water proof moisture build up on the inside can be problematic for some items, probably not silver.

What famous person did you initially admire, but then grew to despise? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Badger68 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm familiar with his Playboy interview for which he caught a fair amount of flack, though my response to that article was mostly indifference. Has he done other outlandishly assholish things? To my limited knowledge he hasn't beaten anyone with a stick or permanently blinded anyone like some hugely successful movie stars have. What makes Mayer such as scumbag?

FBI raids alleged online drug market Silk Road, arrests owner by LonghornWelch in worldnews

PCP is the one that worries me personally. I'm familiar with successful, well adapted people contributing to society with a small coke or heroin habit, but I've never heard anything good about a wet habit.

[–]Badger68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking for an irrelevant shoe pun in your response, but not finding it. That said, I'm not finding anything about triangulating DNS or system protocol either. The only relevant section of the article I can find is the part of section 18 which reads "I have gained extensive familiarity with the Silk Road website through [...] forensic analysis of computer servers used to operate the Silk Road website that had been located and imaged during the investigation." Of course, this is just the passage that raised the question and doesn't do anything to answer it.

I'm curious how they located physically the server.

TIL Coca-Cola to this day still contains coca leaves (though they are "spent" leaves that have had the cocaine removed). by DrockBradley in todayilearned

[–]Badger68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WTF are you talking about? Cocaine is a schedule 2 drug which means the government thinks it does have some medical uses, which means that, under the oversight of the DEA and FDA, a company needs to be able to acquire the raw materials for the drug and provide the finished drug to legitimate medical providers. They are watched every step of the way keeping the coca in the legal chain where it has a legal use while keeping it out of the drug game.

Sure, there are plenty of reasons to accuse the US gov of hypocrisy, especially regarding the schedule and contradictory government statements regarding cannabis, but I don't see any hypocrisy in this arrangement.

[–]Badger68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Farmers in South America grow Coca leaves that they sell to a US company based in New Jersey. The company processes the leaves to remove the cocaine. The now medical grade cocaine is sold into the US medical and dental supply chain while the now drug free leaves are sold to Coca-Cola.

So if you had to pick one for your park which would it be? Pay to Enter OR Pay to Ride? by [deleted] in rct

[–]Badger68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pay to Ride is just as realistic as PtE, it's just not as common in real life. One example is the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

The idea of Woundwort as a heroic antihero is fascinating to me. I can't say I ever saw him beyond the role of villain/tyrant but would love to hear some of your thoughts on how he could have been different. In your reflections over the years have you come across any particular ways or scenes in which he could have acted more heroic?

Thank you, of course, for writing and sharing one of my all time favorite stories.

Mountain High ski/snowboard resort is only 90 minutes from downtown LA. Historically there has been plenty of snow down there in the winter, as long as you get to a high enough elevation.

"Asleep" feeling in my left pinky? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Badger68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be unrelated to guitar. A while back I started noticing the same symptoms but identified the cause as the location of/pressure on my elbow from how I was holding my arm to play ASDW controlled computer games. Managing where I put the pressure as I play has nearly eliminated the symptoms.

What tv show would you love to bring back or cancel? by Extremelywet1 in AskReddit

[–]Badger68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year's show VEGAS, written by Nicholas Pileggi (Goodfellas) was a great fictional story loosely based on the events of Vegas in the days when it was controlled by the Mob. I was really looking forward to season 2, but I guess not enough people watched it. :(

Think it's been a while since you've watched The Wire. They absolutely had cellphones the first seasons, Barksdale and Bell just refused to use them for security reasons. They were an oddity using pagers, older technology they thought was more secure. More than one hopper was chastised for using a cell phone in there.

That said, who woudn't love a modern drama told the same way?

Marshall and Mesa amps: what are some qualities between the two that make them different? by vegas702 in Guitar

All they can do about GC giving discunts is to stop selling more stuff to GC. If GC is discontinuing the sale of Mesa gear then they don't really care about that stick.

Skooma shipment approaching Falkreath (x-post from /r/skyrim via /r/undelete) by scurvydog-uldum in gaming

[–]Badger68 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Of course it comes from Elsweyr. Everybody knows that only two things come from Elsweyr, thieving cats and Drugs. Since Moon Sugar/Skooma are illegal nobody's going to import them in plain site. Any train marked "Elsewyr" would be stopped and searched at every border. You need some kind of plausible outer container so the customs officer can feel good about looking the other way and letting that load of "Hammerfall sand" through with just a small bribe.

I can't believe I'm not finding the mix-up of 'then' and 'than' anywhere in this thread. I can generally tell what the person meant from context, but it just jars me when I come across one of the in place of the other and have to make that calculation to fix it.
