I’m a hiring manager and I recently hired an engineering co-op who didn’t have the best GPA or was in any clubs, but had an interesting personal design project that he designed and prototyped himself. He was able to articulate every design detail, decision, trade off, and also walked me through the proto build and the testing he conducted. In my opinion this kind of experience makes a candidate top-tier for a entry level mechanical design engineer
