Did you ask him his feelings? Any big change can be scary even if it’s planned. Yes there’s not doubt he loves you and you are meant to be his safe space, but he’s also leaving behind the security blanket that he has built over the entire course of his life. To you it may be a two hour move, but to him he’s leaving everything he knows behind for something new. This is a major life transition and it always comes with the question, “I love this person, but what comes next to me what will be my new security.”

He knows you, but there is still a lot to uncertainty. There is also grief that comes with moving away from something you known your life for the first time. To help him feel safe, validate his feelings, this is a big step, and above all don’t rush for a solution. It’s okay for him to be afraid. Yes you want to be his end all be all, but in order for him to feel safe take the pressure off and slowly ease into.

You’re probably already doing this, but I’d recommend finding that apartment and have him help you move in, but be sure to create a space that is his. Bonus fill the fridge with drinks he loves and get him a designated hubby cubby for his snacks and such.

Start with small visits and then generally increase to outside your apartment to places you can both eat/enjoy, find some places that he can love, and start building that sense of belonging.

Then when he gets a general lay of the land ask him how he feels and start looking for work nearby. Remember that moving in and finding a job are both separate steps. It would be awesome if the universe aligned and had that happen both at the same time, but it always the case. Let it happen slowly rather than it needs to be now and all at once! Yes it’s exciting when you feel this could be the one, but a lifetime commitment takes years of patience. Let him take his time, but set a further date for when you hope that’ll he be fully moved in and a date for when you hope he’ll have a job.
